In my experience, utilitarians seem to just make stuff up as they go along based on their intuitions and then post-hoc rationalize it in order to give a veneer of objectivity to what is really just their subjective opinions. The world is too complex to rationally compute everything in a utilitarian way, and most utilitarians don't even bother with the computation anyway. When you hear them reason out their morality it's clear they already start with some desired outcome that they then work backwards to justify however they need to to get there. And reality is complex and ambiguous enough so that you can always rationalize whatever conclusion you want in some consequentialist way. Utilitarianism is the ethical theory for lazy Machiavellians who want to play God
