    How long do you think you could hold Kona winning power?

    • @legne1
      @legne1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      at least 2hrs.
      you will have to put the trainer into a bathtub though. Mark thinks he is a heavy sweater...

    "It goes up to a maximum of 2500W resistance, which I don't think our beginner or amateur is gonne need today" Well, I am pretty sure that Mark will hold a constant 2500W, no doubt.

    I know that W/KG is a easy metric to understand. But given that the pros are going between 40-43kph the biggest resistance is air not weight. So the best metric would be watts/CDA, hard to measure but always worth saying. I hate the media obsession with weight and cycling. I have done a 51min 25 mile TT at 112KG. I was no wear near 4 W/KG! More like 3.1ish (320-330 watts)

    The beginner holding that power for over 5 min was impressive, I was thinking 2 minutes max for him.

      Color me skeptical. I’m far from a beginner and definitely can’t hold 360 watts for 5 minutes (at 77kg weight). I can hold 4 watts/kg for 3mins and I’d venture I’m more fit by a decent margin.

      That was some impressive power. Imagine if they had done 290 watts for all three athletes. He would probably still be riding.

    For relatively flat triathlon courses, how much is down to "power to weight" and how much is pure "power"? I guess the real metric is "power to frontal area" but that's not so user friendly!

    • @deanb61
      @deanb61 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought that, but Kona is surprisingly hilly actually. Very little of it is flat.

    • @jonathanzappala
      @jonathanzappala 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Definitely it’s power to CdA. That’s why Emma Pooley can be world champion despite weighing very little. It’s also why Remco Evenopoel is on e of the best time trialists, he’s short so he’s small, and can finish 3rd to the much larger and more powerful Stefan Kung’s second. Kona may be hilly but even going up hill at pro speeds staying aero is sill a big advantage.

  • @danmartin9086

    this is so unfair; you should have set the wats at same level the record did. If was let's say 290w then the 3 riders go to 290w. Having the beginner at 360 vs the "pro" at 290 is just dumb

  • @two-eyedRoy
    @two-eyedRoy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there a re-run in the pipeline where the Phil and Quinn try to hold the Kona winners recorded avg. Watts for as long as possible?
    So rather than their equivalent W:kg, it's just the winners' Watts.

    This is why I like running much more. 310W is piece of cake when running, I do way more on my easy runs and I am amateur.
    Don't get me wrong, cycling is fantastic, but if your goal is to get a proper workout then running is way more effective.
    The downside is, besides buying a sports watch there isn't any excuse to buy expensive toys for a runner. What a bummer...

    • @pierrex3226
      @pierrex3226 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you use for power tracking?

    • @lukasschick3489
      @lukasschick3489 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Questionable opinion 🤔 You can't exactly compare running power (measured by Stryd or similar) to cycling power

    • @leonardmilcin7798
      @leonardmilcin7798 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lukasschick3489 Well... you can and you can't.
      The cycling power is easy to measure directly, you put a strain gauge on the crank, rotation sensor and boom, you calculate power.
      The running power is much more complex and it cannot be measure directly and should be thought as an estimate.
      On the other hand it is Garmin who is doing it and they are citing a bunch of research that went into it. It probably has same caveats like other measurements (say VO2max) that you can't use it to compare different people and it only makes sense to track your personal level of performance over time.
      On the other hand we know running is much less efficient than cycling. Bikes are extremely efficient and require 10x less energy to cover same distance than walking. I don't know exactly how this applies to cycling hard vs running hard.
      Running also uses much more muscle mass in the body for movement.
      And if you look at the length of training sessions -- most people spend much more time on bike than running to get spent.
      There will of course always be people who will do sprints on bikes which require a lot of power.
      But I personally can't do it. It just takes too much time to convert all the glycogen I have available on bike vs running. On bike my few muscles can't generate enough force and tire faster than my energy reserves whereas when running I can pretty reliably hit a wall when I know I just used up all my stores of glycogen.
      But I am an amateur but I also think this is the point -- it is easier for me, an amateur, to get a proper workout when running than it is on a bycicle.

    There’s absolutely no chance Phil could put out 360 watts for 5 minutes in his shape/fitness. That would put his FTP around 200 watts or so which seems improbable for a recreational cyclist with a dad bod (no judgement).

    • @Ridewithjst
      @Ridewithjst 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just checked my power curve and I can hold 4 watts/KG for like 3 minutes and I’m in better condition and more intense. Zero chance his average power was above 360w for 5m

    • @phillipbailey7080
      @phillipbailey7080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hey Jordan. I can 💯 say that I did 360 Watts for 5 mins. I went deep and that's as far as I could push. Keep working on it champ and I bet you can do same. #dadbodandproud

      Well done Phil, great effort

    • @agenthoini
      @agenthoini 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming your conversion to a 200w ftp is correct thatd put his ftp around 2.2w/kg. While im lacking the dad bod i can definitely hold that for an hour pretty comfortably and ability wise im definitely a looot closer to the beginner category than i am to the amateur category presented in this video. So if he has some fitness from riding his bike a bit that seems far from impossible to me

    • @Ridewithjst
      @Ridewithjst 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@agenthoini I ride 3x week, have been riding for 12yrs, and recently tackled some of the most well known climbs in Mallorca and Menorca that break people (or they just avoid). My FTP is somewhere around 185-205, or 2.4 a 2.7 w/kg. I’ve done a lot of big group rides and small with riders at various levels, and as described, there’s no way Phil could hold anywhere near that. Maybe the power meter on the trainer and/or the software is wonky, maybe his cardio is just out of this world vs his waistline (no judgement), just seems improbable purely based on how his riding is described.
