Colockum Ridge by Helicopter

  • SIT ON THE NOSE OF MY HELICOPTER as we take a flight up into the Colockum Ridge area south of Wenatchee, WA and east of the Columbia River. This footage is from an elk scouting flight I did in September 2019 and we see plenty of elk up in the national forest as we fly around in a random route over the forest and its clearings. My only edits were to cut out the parts where I flew around in circles for more than one lap.
I made this video to offer a holiday viewing alternative for family gatherings. Perfect for any age, with music that's more likely to put you to sleep than to offend you (or grandma), it has gorgeous mountain views and plenty of spotting opportunities: the helicopter's shadow, Mount Rainier, elk, trucks in the middle of nowhere, etc. (Use the video comments to share other weird things you spotted.) And, for the record, I think some of the best footage is in the second half of this video, especially some of the canyon and river footage.
If you're looking for something exciting, this ain't it. But not everything about flying helicopters is exciting. Sometimes it's just beautiful and calming and a feeling like you're a bird. I hope you enjoy this.
Happy Holidays from Flying M Air.
    About Me and the Helicopter
    - I have been flying since 1998. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
    - My helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II. You can learn more about R44s here: robinsonheli.c... This is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000.
    - My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: www.flightrada... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines.
    About the Video
    - The video was recorded with a GoPro Hero 7 camera (amzn.to/2Lxyzwl) mounted on the nose of the helicopter. Audio, which includes wind, engine, and rotor noise, comes from the camera's built-in speaker and has been incorporated into this video at 10% normal volume.
    - The music I chose for this video is called "Light Awash" by Kevin MacLeod which reminds me A LOT of the soundtrack for the original "Blade Runner" movie. Here's the official notice:
Light Awash by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (creativecommon...)
    Source: incompetech.com...
    Artist: incompetech.com/
    - The video was edited on a Macintosh using Screenflow software. Learn more about it here: www.telestream...
I try to drop cockpit POV videos every Sunday morning and "extras" with more info about owning and operating a helicopter midweek. (Some channel members get early access to some of these videos.) I also host occasional livestreams with Q&A chats. Subscribe so you don't miss anything new! And tell your friends. The more subscribers I have, the more motivated I am to keep producing videos.
Some links on my channel are affiliate links, including all links to Amazon (amzn.to/32PLHTD). If you click one of them and buy something, I get a small referral reward. It doesn't cost you anything so I hope you'll shop with one of those links. Thanks.

Stunning scenery Maria - with matching music.
Conditions looked ideal and much with sun behind or to side, some very nice contrast. Such a huge expanse, particularly evident where a lack of trees. The river is truly majestic.
Thanks very much for the shared ride :)

Brilliant, beautiful, ethereal, magic carpet ride - even the subtle purring of the blade-slap, dreaming flight, meditative - all that and more! I do very much enjoy the technical and your narrations yet; this is an exceptional, exception to the SOP - Thank you very much @Maria - One more thing to be _thankful_ for! Cheers and best wishes- (edit) What dope, down-voted this?! - _I don't want that - wahh!_ Poor thing-

Oh, and the music was PERFECT, reflecting God’s Country on your video,...without car traffic, lawn mowers running, tv or radio blaring, nailing a new roof,...nothing but whatever the wind blows as it passes over that gorgeous land,....of the free.....for miles n miles n miles..! That’s us...!

Lovely vision. I can't help to feel for the Elk. I know charter is how you make your money but taking hunters to scout for Elk, to me is a little like dancing with evil. Hunting defenceless animals must surely be the epitome of evil.

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They don’t hunt from the helicopter. There are specific rules they have to follow regarding scouting prior to an actual hunting trip. If it makes you feel any better, although the hunter did get a bull elk when he went hunting a few days later, it wasn’t any of the elk that we saw. There are a lot of elk up there and the herds actually do benefit from thinning out. Also please remember that these hunters use every part of the elk - while they may keep the heads as trophies, they eat all of the meat. This is not some vanity hunt.
