Any idea why the designs on the Space Pirates are different in each Prime game? In Prime 2 they're more reptilian and in Prime 3 they look like the Sangheili "Elites" in the Halo series, except with a couple extra pairs of eyes. None of them look like the space pirates in the main series, yet from the log entries some of these are supposed to be the same pirates that were on Zebes, as well as the same pirates in Prime 2 and 3. Why then do they look like entirely different species from game to game? Could Retro just not make up their mind on how they should look?
@@BlueAmpharos I imagine the Space Pirates aren't meant as a singular race but a collection of aliens that came together to conduct piracy. Thus they look different from planet to planet
Please hit me with that Prime 2 Cut Content. I've delved so deep into Prime 2 since it was my first and from memory alone there's so much on the cutting room floor it's great.
@@TheObsessiveGamer The log entries in Metroid Prime on the frigate Orpheon indicate that most of them were the same pirates who were on Zebes, same in Metroid Prime 2 with entries indicating they left Tallon IV to Aether to continue their research on phazon. Then there's their homeworld called... well they didn't bother to actually name the planet it's just the space pirate homeworld, but they're all the same species as well so the lore of the games seems to indicate they're one species, yet Retro Studios changed their design in every game for seemingly no reason.
I really like the tone and inflection Jennifer gives Samus. She nails that stoic, measured, kinda moody protag vibe. Nintendo should have taken note for Other M.
In the PAL version of this game actually has a slightly different version of that which is in the intro and after samus escapes the impact crater. Instead of samus saying it it’s some narrator
I know I would have preferred to fight it. Though I think it needed some design tweaks. It looks more like an ice monkey who stole a Shegoth's ice carapace, and not a natural evolution to Shegoths. If the Shegoth's had little arms and head that transitioned to ape like, from the baby's head, I might have seen it.
Hale's read of that monologue is stellar. Had they swapped every instance of third-person pronouns and opted instead for her reciting the events in first person, that could have been an incredible opening.
The PAL region release has so many updates and changes over the original NA release it's worth covering in a second video. I'm pretty sure the intense heat message played in my version.
@@TheObsessiveGamer tcrf.nets subpages for the game should have almost everything you need beyond playing it for yourself. For example all Chozo logs were completely rewritten altering the plotline.
I'm actually glad the opening monologue was cut, despite Jennifer Hale's masterful presentation of it. It would be really odd to hear it at the beginning and then never hear another voice. I believe it was planned (or maybe it actually happened in the Euro version) that the different areas would be announced as you entered them for the first time. I did end up loving this game despite being initially put off by it's first-person aspect. By the time I finally got a GC this game was EVERYWHERE and only $5. :D
You do have a point that it might be out of place since her voice would not appear again. Though it wouldn't have been too out of place since Super Metroid did something similar with her have a monologue that recapped the previous games and never spoke again. Yeah at first I didn't wanna play cause it was in first person (wasn't a fan of first person back then) but it's praise made me wanna at least give it a try. Glad I did!
Nice, loved all the historical bits about Retro and Nintendo's involvement. For all the development problems they had, they made a true masterpiece. Nintendo has a knack for bringing out the best in smaller studios.
That scrapped intro monologue was re-used for the track of Metroid Prime's Title Theme in Super Smash Bros Brawl but was re-recorded and shortened. Interesting how it still lives on in Smash Bros of all places

Interesting question, probably a genre thing. They were going for an alone feel with aliens. It's why you saw few Fed Marines on Echoes. If Samus did hunt civilian bounties, would feel out of place and too edgy.
Although it would be interesting if they did an off-shoot of Samus chasing criminals deep in Federation Cities. Gives a chance to explore her character in a more serious manner.
Samus does mention looking for other bounty in Super Metroid. So, she probably does do more normal bounty hunting. But a game like that would not seem very Metroid.
I think they should’ve made a Metroid and Mass Effect crossover DLC for mass effect 2 where it’s revealed thru plot twist Metroid and mass effect take place in the same universe by the way I think Metroid and mass effect take place in the same universe
Isn't it kind of scary how much Miyamoto just shifts shit when it comes to their IPs? Why can't he just let creativity happen? Granted, it USUALLY works out for the consumer but it still gets me triggered at times when it comes to development times. You know? My friend in DC said "Out of all the things COVID took.. I wouldn't have been surprised if it whacked Miyamoto." and I kind of lold for a bit before thinking how much of a shake up it'd be.
Well Miyamotos name is crazy high in the industry which makes sense considering all his contributions. As such Nintendo definitely gives him the freedom to shake things up if he wants to otherwise they might lose a good talent like him to another company. Granted, his judgement is why Metroid Prime turned out so good I say. Infact without him Metroid Prime might have not happened at all

The ideas for the final bosses sounded so amazing I wish they actually added them. Possesed Ridley, Omega Metroids (the blue giant ones) and the scenario for the Metroid Prime bossfight... Anyway, we got a very complete videogame in the end
They probably also cut the samus narration at the beginning because in the end the game doesn't take place 10 years after the first game it actually takes place immediately afterwards.

Well that wasn't Mother Brain, but another Aurora unit all together. Mother Brain was just the Aurora Unit that controlled the Space Pirates and many places in the galaxy had their own Aurora Units too.
Yeah I have thought that and the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Heck the final boss of there is kinda like what they wanted as a final boss for MP2 originally

Perhaps this is just me knowing these voice actors' style of voices well, but I believe that voice clip you played at 10:19 is actually Vanessa Marshall, best known for playing Hera Syndulla in Star Wars Rebels. The way she speaks sounds like her to me imo, and there is the whole VM initial debacle with some people speculating that's Marshall as well. But we can't be 100% certain unless she or someone else confirms it I suppose.
That definitely is Jennifer Hale. I have heard her enough times to know that is her voice and is using her exact Naomi Hunter voice here too (let alone her being the only confirmed voice actor of the game)
Opinion/Theory: When Miyamoto changed the perspective to first person, it was due to the hype around Halo on Xbox and he felt that the Gamecube needed a title in that genre to better compete in the market. Prime 2 very obviously tried to compete with Halo 2, releasing the week after and even referenced Master Chief in the marketing.
Metroid Prime was a great game and a great series. I really appreciate how much Prime was similar to Super Metroid as far as gameplay and exploration. I remember looking at the screenshots in a 2001 GamePro magazine and wanted a Nintendo GameCube so badly for that game. Then when I finally played it, I was blown away. Usually a game doesn't really blow me away but Metroid Prime definitely did the job. But it would have been cool if there was voice dialogue. It was fine that it didn't but Metroid Prime 3 does. Except for Samus.
A third person perspective would have been nice also there’s been a huge argument over weather Jenifer voiced Samus in prime in especially because she was uncredited but I do know that the cut opening dialogue was definitely Jennifer Hale
Late, but it is actually confirmed that Jennifer was one of *ten* actresses who recorded adr grunts and sounds that were used for Prime, another of whom was Vanessa Marshall, verified by herself and interviews with Clark Wen, and Vanessa may have actually be the one who recorded the abandoned opening narration.
Fun Fact Metroid Prime was my first Metroid game I played. Growing up I never heard about a Metroid until the Gamecube Era where I rent it from Blockbuster, and then own one from my Birthday.
I remember some of the beta stuff coming in the mail on a PC disc of upcoming Nintendo releases. And at some point Kraid had been mentioned in one of the issues.
Would have been cool to see Metroid 2 Return of Samus as an unlocked game in Prime 2 and use of the classic controller to play Super Metroid in Prime 3
Man that's such a good idea. Would have truly brought the series nearly to full circle that way and by default would mean the trilogy collection would have all 3 too

The beta space pirates looked SO much cooler than the final version of them. The final version of the space pirates look kinda goofy with their huge backs.
Imagine if Metroid had beaten Resident Evil 4 to the “over the shoulder” and “off to the right” camera perspectives. If the game would have worked like that, of course.

Me too. It saddens me to see these images of Kraid while knowing he never made it into the game. I grew up on the original Metroid so Kraid brings back tons of nostalgia for me.
The intended boss for Phendrana Drifts looks like a mutated Sheegoth. I don’t think it would’ve been out of place and would’ve much rather fought that thing than Thardus. Don’t get me wrong Thardus is ok but he felt like a step down from Flaagrah.
That dark possessed Ridley art might’ve been planned for prime 2 due to the dark and possessed as most enemies are possessed by Ing and then called ‘dark’ (insert enemy name here) also the Metroid prime is genderless until it takes the phazon suit
dark possessed Ridley existed prior to Metroid Prime 2, and was indeed meant for Metroid Prime 1. It was hosted on Nintendo's site for Metroid Prime 1. So this indeed would have been a MP1 concept. For Metroid Prime itself, I always assumed it was female since it would give birth to Metroids midbattle like that. Kind of a variation of the Queen Metroid?

Aside from the first-person thing (which I agree with), everything else is a perfect example of Miyamoto thinking he knows best but talking rubbish. Not a fan of him now that all this stuff is coming out.
Well tbh Miyamoto's major shakeups were really only cancelling the other projects and changing the perspective. It's not known of him meddling with other decisions within this game.
I think they would have done better adapting third person and first person where you could have chose first-person or third-person I'm hoping if Metroid Prime 4 will have this option and no she was explaining the entirety of Metro 1 and 2 and 3 which wouldn't make any sense in Canon so I'm glad that they actually kept the Prime games non-canon.

So not ALL of the scrapped ideas were forever gone or thrown away never to be used again. 6:40 Prime fans know THIS particular design. The Beta Phazon suit comes back albeit in a different form as its what they used for the PED suits corruption in Metroid Prime 3 Corruption. It's nice to see that they can go back to scrapped ideas and say , "Hey we couldn't do this before, why not adapt and improve this design now for what we plan to do?"
Yeah the colour scheme is there definitely to now reflect the colour of Phazon well. It's design is still a bit different however from what I am seeing
@@TheObsessiveGamer Thats why I said a different form, I do recall seeing a video where one of the devs spoke and said the Beta Phazon suit was the inspiration for the PED suits appearance when fully corrupted. So tehy didn't just take the 100% original design but it inspired it.

Actually Mother Brain made it into the third game in some other form as the Galactic Federation central AI and eventually the final boss on Phaze.
Well that wasn't Mother Brain, but another Aurora unit all together. Mother Brain was just the Aurora Unit that controlled the Space Pirates and many places in the galaxy had their own Aurora Units too.

The cut final area describes Phazee from MP3:C to a T. They simply used that concept for Corruption instead. Really interesting.
Yeah I have thought that and the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Heck the final boss of there is kinda like what they wanted as a final boss for MP2 originally

I love this game so much but I actually never really looked into the history of it so this was all very interesting stuff

What surprised the most just recently is that the german version of the game appears to have a lot of Informations that don't exist in other versions.
Perhaps this is just me knowing these voice actors' style of voices well, but I believe that voice clip you played at 10:19 is actually Vanessa Marshall, best known for playing Hera Syndulla in Star Wars Rebels. The way she speaks sounds like her to me imo, and there is the whole VM initial debacle with some people speculating that's Marshall as well. But we can't be 100% certain unless she or someone else confirms it I suppose.
That definitely is Jennifer Hale. I have heard her enough times to know that is her voice and is using her exact Naomi Hunter voice here too (let alone her being the only confirmed voice actor of the game)
Opinion/Theory:
When Miyamoto changed the perspective to first person, it was due to the hype around Halo on Xbox and he felt that the Gamecube needed a title in that genre to better compete in the market. Prime 2 very obviously tried to compete with Halo 2, releasing the week after and even referenced Master Chief in the marketing.
Metroid Prime was a great game and a great series. I really appreciate how much Prime was similar to Super Metroid as far as gameplay and exploration. I remember looking at the screenshots in a 2001 GamePro magazine and wanted a Nintendo GameCube so badly for that game. Then when I finally played it, I was blown away. Usually a game doesn't really blow me away but Metroid Prime definitely did the job. But it would have been cool if there was voice dialogue. It was fine that it didn't but Metroid Prime 3 does. Except for Samus.
Honestly I don't think many of us were expecting this level of quality to the game. No wonder it stuck with us so hard
A third person perspective would have been nice also there’s been a huge argument over weather Jenifer voiced Samus in prime in especially because she was uncredited but I do know that the cut opening dialogue was definitely Jennifer Hale

Late, but it is actually confirmed that Jennifer was one of *ten* actresses who recorded adr grunts and sounds that were used for Prime, another of whom was Vanessa Marshall, verified by herself and interviews with Clark Wen, and Vanessa may have actually be the one who recorded the abandoned opening narration.

Fun Fact Metroid Prime was my first Metroid game I played.
Growing up I never heard about a Metroid until the Gamecube Era where I rent it from Blockbuster, and then own one from my Birthday.
I remember some of the beta stuff coming in the mail on a PC disc of upcoming Nintendo releases. And at some point Kraid had been mentioned in one of the issues.
Oh yeah I remember these promo discs. Nothing was playable but had a lot of neat previews
Would have been cool to see Metroid 2 Return of Samus as an unlocked game in Prime 2 and use of the classic controller to play Super Metroid in Prime 3

Me too. It saddens me to see these images of Kraid while knowing he never made it into the game. I grew up on the original Metroid so Kraid brings back tons of nostalgia for me.

The intended boss for Phendrana Drifts looks like a mutated Sheegoth. I don’t think it would’ve been out of place and would’ve much rather fought that thing than Thardus. Don’t get me wrong Thardus is ok but he felt like a step down from Flaagrah.

That dark possessed Ridley art might’ve been planned for prime 2 due to the dark and possessed as most enemies are possessed by Ing and then called ‘dark’ (insert enemy name here) also the Metroid prime is genderless until it takes the phazon suit
dark possessed Ridley existed prior to Metroid Prime 2, and was indeed meant for Metroid Prime 1. It was hosted on Nintendo's site for Metroid Prime 1. So this indeed would have been a MP1 concept. For Metroid Prime itself, I always assumed it was female since it would give birth to Metroids midbattle like that. Kind of a variation of the Queen Metroid?

Aside from the first-person thing (which I agree with), everything else is a perfect example of Miyamoto thinking he knows best but talking rubbish. Not a fan of him now that all this stuff is coming out.
Well tbh Miyamoto's major shakeups were really only cancelling the other projects and changing the perspective. It's not known of him meddling with other decisions within this game.

I think they would have done better adapting third person and first person where you could have chose first-person or third-person I'm hoping if Metroid Prime 4 will have this option and no she was explaining the entirety of Metro 1 and 2 and 3 which wouldn't make any sense in Canon so I'm glad that they actually kept the Prime games non-canon.

So not ALL of the scrapped ideas were forever gone or thrown away never to be used again. 6:40 Prime fans know THIS particular design. The Beta Phazon suit comes back albeit in a different form as its what they used for the PED suits corruption in Metroid Prime 3 Corruption. It's nice to see that they can go back to scrapped ideas and say , "Hey we couldn't do this before, why not adapt and improve this design now for what we plan to do?"
Yeah the colour scheme is there definitely to now reflect the colour of Phazon well. It's design is still a bit different however from what I am seeing
@@TheObsessiveGamer Thats why I said a different form, I do recall seeing a video where one of the devs spoke and said the Beta Phazon suit was the inspiration for the PED suits appearance when fully corrupted. So tehy didn't just take the 100% original design but it inspired it.
