    Got a bunch of oldies gifted to me.
    Heard that dated brewkits are no good, watery.
    So very interested to see this one!

      Just did another one of those old kits. You are correct. the extract is a little watery not too bad. What I did find out was it sees to have a lot less sugar in it. I keep getting low SG.. The one I just did was only 1.023 after adding 1Kg dextrose.

      @@SimpleHomeBrew interesting. Maybe using a Non dry malt extract would be the way to add a bit of thickness.
      You going to do any vid to taste this dark ale?

    I use my coopers fermenter to mix my extract beers in than I take a sample and transfer to my actual fermenter from the tap

    • @SimpleHomeBrew
      @SimpleHomeBrew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Although that's a good idea and convenient I try not to do that for one reason only, there is a higher risk of contamination.

      @@SimpleHomeBrew As long as you sanitise both vessels its no riskier than using a single vessel! Im doing an extract beer this afternoon this way 🍻

    Crazy that is it 9 years past the date but still smelled good. If there is not metal taste in the final product, you are set! Also on the Tilt as I am noticing it is the newest model (my 3rd one is the same but my other two are much older) do you notice any calibration adjustments even being needed? The new one I got has been dead on every time so far and has gone through 5 brews now. My two older ones always need a bit of a tweak. The first one I ever purchased had to be sent back (several years ago) as it was reading over 5000 F (over 2670 C for you) so there was obviously a problem but the they took care of it as I purchased it direct as they were being sold by retailers that I was aware of yet.

      I just tasted this brew, It is quite nice. I am going to to give a sample to the person that gave me this extract to taste, they are going to film the result. Looking forward to it.

    I have two cans of Mr Beer Pilsner extract that expired in 2014. I’ve been thinking about trying them out to see what would happen. I guess the only thing I have to loose is a little effort, and just might possibly gain a bit of somewhat drinkable beer.

      Thanks for the offer but I am inclined to refuse. They seem to come out pretty good but in my mind they are a risk to drink long term, I am being a little paranoid as they do taste good. Here is a link to the tasting video. It was live so we have issues at the start. it gets better at around 4 minute point. th-cam.com/video/Poi4NZGSqrs/w-d-xo.html

    • @SimpleHomeBrew
      @SimpleHomeBrew  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Philip, my thoughts are that after a period of time the least you should do is rinse it with sanitizer just before using it, just to be safe. I only sanitize my kegs the day i use them. 😀

    Hi Pierre I noticed you added a campden tablet. What is the purpose of this?

    • @SimpleHomeBrew
      @SimpleHomeBrew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use these to neutralize the chlorine and chloramine that the water purification plant put in our water. It makes a big difference the the final product. Half a tablet is all you need for twenty litres of tap water.

      @@SimpleHomeBrew thanks Pierre, this may have solved my problem. I've been getting an off flavour in all my brews. It only appears when it's been fermenting for a few days and seems to become more concentrated when bottled. I think it may be my tap water. I'm going to use a campden tablet in my next brew and see if it makes a difference.
      Thanks again.
