What a find this is. I'm only a westerner with no conditioned appreciation of Chinese music, but this piece seems to capture the essence of traditional Chinese culture. this is what I think of as 'the sound of China.'

There were three kinds of konghou, and the vertical version - the one depicted int he picture - is believed to have originated from the West, which the Chinese then adapted. It had been extremely popular but then faded into obscurity. The konghou people play now is a modern recreation of the instrument from records and paintings.

The flute-sounding instrument in this song is the xiao, which resembles the western flute. As a konghou player myself, I can confidently tell you that the modern konghou mostly looks like a pedal harp with no pedals that is double stringed. On youtube, there are quite a few recordings... Thanks a lot for your explanation! I'll see if I can listen to the Kunghou master Cui Junzhi if possible. There are many people interested in asian music in Europe, same as me who want to see it. Maybe somebody will rebuild the original Kunghou, same as I've seen a reconstructed cither from 10th or 12th century played by Do Bi Guan.

Was the Konghou a typical instrument of the Xiao people? It is interesting that most of the Konghou clips show a harp similar to the celtic harp or the european concert harp so the reconstruction is more about the music and less about the instruments.

箜篌有雙排弦，且它的弦線跟豎琴不一樣，豎琴是羊腸弦
但箜篌的弦線類似古箏，且箜篌有古箏所謂的燕柱，所以箜篌能吟弦，這是豎琴做不到的。
彈奏方式也有很大的差異，豎琴是往上甩，但箜篌是往下甩。且箜篌能彈奏出輪音，豎琴不行。
這應該是指改良過的現代箜篌吧？是20世紀70年代，由中國樂器改革家結合豎箜篌、豎琴和古箏並再創新的新樂器。古代國畫裡，箜篌看起來沒有雙排弦。
根據網路資料：豎琴也曾經出現雙排弦的設計。至於兩者的弦線同不同，要看是和哪類豎琴比較；在豎琴家族，也有弦線類似古箏的。雁柱箜篌(改良式箜篌)才有古箏的「燕柱」，是不是為了讓箜篌能吟弦，值得探索。
彈奏方往上甩或往下甩，看樂器的結構組織，如果只和標準化豎琴比較，兩者當然有差。豎琴也可以輪音，只是因為豎琴的張力大，輪音效果不佳，若在古豎琴上演奏輪音，和箜篌相似。
箜篌這一樂器讓人想起古代長詩《孔雀東南飛》。“十三能織素，十四學裁衣，十五弹箜篌，十六誦詩書。十七為君婦，心中常苦悲。”
这上面说的应该是卧箜篌，形制类似于朝鲜半岛现在流行的玄鹤琴。但宋代就渐渐失传了。

箜篌は古代中国の楽器でしたが、明以降は断絶があって、前世紀80年代になってはじめて中国で復元に成功されたものです。近年、復元に努めた先生が台湾に教えてきていますが、コンサートができるレベルに至っているとは思いません。
