For me the movie biggest takeaway was the villan origin story as he was not a random dude popping up to do something bad instead all the things he did has a reason. It was such a well written and layered character.

@@joseph5489 I don't think the movie established such an idea. It strives in a path where the Villain character's mother is labelled as a "lunatic" by the society, which in turn deeply hurts the Guru's character even as a child, leading to trauma and conduct disorder....eventually to anti-social behaviour. It was never said that he had any kind of inherited mental illness like Bipolar disorder or something.
It was all about how he and his family was treated since day one.

The conversation he had with Jaison was something that many superhero films missed. The conversation between them was something fresh. The whole story being set in a remote villaige and in a particular time period was a brilliant move that proved viewrs something fresh instead of the cliche world ending event in a major city. When we talk about someone making a superhero movie, we imagine trying to "copy" MCU or DCEU etc., which could be either cringy or boring but this movie is a perfect blend of American superhero movie plots and Indian culture which made it more exciting. Though the story is simple; the screenplay and the cinematography are iconic. The villain. My God, the Villain. He is fantastic. His smile sent shivers. Tovino is the perfect choice. I really appreciate the fact that the story is not only written for a superhero, the story also focuses on the villain and his origin aswell. The thing is with many superhero films it's somewhat almost rare to see a villain and his origin story right along side the superhero. The other thing is the story takes it's time and doesn't rush into the good stuff, it gives you time to know the character's and how the interact with the people around them prior to getting their powers.

Minnal has ticks all the facets, except for one major flaw which never happens in superhero movies is that they don't kill the villian. Since, Basil sort of choreographed it as a symbolic representation of St.George Killing the devil, which the last scene has semblance to.

2 back to back great movies (Minnal Murali and Kadeesele Briyani) from 2 great industries from India (Malayalam and Tamil) in Netflix has one thing in common- the 'super' villains are great! And the actors, the most underrated great Tamil actor Guru Somasundaram is the villain in the Malayalam movie, and the talented Malayalam actor Hakkim Shah is the villain in the Tamil movie. Is this a mere coincidence or are both industries complimenting each other? I would like to be the latter.

Towards the middle of the film I recognized him. Never have I been too happy to recognize an actor from one of his earliest movies😄.

I really enjoyed this movie because it was not just about the superhero aspect, it was about a perfect balance between that and the protagonist (and antagonist's) day to day life. I find that some superhero movies do get lost in the "superhero-ness" of it all; all the powers and the fancy effects. Which I am not complaining about! It's great to watch and a visual treat, and I suppose that's what they are made for. I just found Minnal Murali a real enjoyable watch because it was not just about the powers and strength; there was storyline above this too. Maybe because it was an origin story, but I really enjoyed the plot. And I did not feel like I was watching a "south indian" film - this was an Indian film, and the fact we get that sense says a lot about how beautifully this movie has come together. I hope this paves the way for more movies like this in the future, from all regions, and in all languages :)
Love your reviews!! Keep up the good work! :)

I liked how the hero and villain had parallels and how the writing kind of looked into what may be called as a thin line between becoming a hero and a villain, both the villain and the hero had similar circumstances except the setting they were brought up, Jaison had a family setting that nurtured him while shibu had a problamatic childhood, I really wish this movie had more budget to back the writing but also satisfied I wasnt looking too much into the action scenes to gratify me as I could connect with the characters, this happens very rarely with this genre.

It's a Guru somasundaram show, what i like about the movie is it really shows the path of both Jason & Shibu from the very beginning of the movie, & the main theme of the movie is "Choice" as both of them are put in the same situation & have same power's but what they choose to do is the thing that defines them be it when Jason was about to get arrested or people attacking Shibu one decided to surrender where the other choose to attack & it really broke my heart when Shibu lost the only thing that he ever wanted just moments after getting it i am proud to say we have our own superhero now

I am very, Very Picky about movies. I just don't enjoy all of them. I don't watch a lot of Indian movies and i certainly don't watch a lot of Superhero movies from the West. I scroll thought Netflix for like 15 minutes before turning it off and reading a book. But Minnal Murali was something I found scrolling through Netflix a day after it's release. And i decided to give it a shot because I was bored.
And damn me for making that choice, because I loved every second of it. I watched the movie in one sitting and rewatched it again 3 days later.
The film is not without flaws. But the effort is so sincere and genuine that i couldn't help but love it and recommend it to my whole family. And they did watch it because they knew how picky I am, so this movie must have been extra special.

Having just watched the film, I can say, Minnal Murali is one of the best superhero movies put up this year and I'm not exaggerating. This is a near perfect superhero film in terms of story, screenplay, characters and especially, the villain.
The villain here is simply one of the best I've seen in a long time in Indian commercial cinema. He's a perfect supervillain with great motivation and absolute intimidating presence. I'm not gonna spoil for others but the actor portraying him has done a masterful job. This film should be as recognizable and popular as KGF and Bahubali. Better watch this than Pushpa.
Let's hope we get a sequel.
