My favorite way to play this 2-player is both humans on the same side while the bot rules control both factions of the other side. Such a unique, fun semi-co-op experience that way.
I'm happy to see the high praise you give to Pericles. The Great Statesmen series is terrific. I'm currently playing Versailles 1919 solo and enjoying it immensely. Can't wait to see what Mark Herman does in Triumvir.
Hey Kirk. I love Pericles etc but can't find the solo fun in Versailles. The theme just doesn't come through for me. Would like to hear what appeals to you in the solo mode.
i liked your old review but felt disappointed that you hadn't gotten to experience the full scope of the game so i'm glad that finally happened! the social entanglement of four people with sometimes conflicting and sometimes aligning desires is so juicy and i think core to what really drives the game's tension. i've gotten to play it quite a few times lately at four and really fell in love with it. i have a few gripes about the game but they're pretty minor. i just haven't been able to get it out of my head and read Thucydides to tide me over until my next playthrough. thrilling!
I played it some when first got it and it is a gem of a game. I did have a little problem seeing what the battle board was going to effect the debate, but I felt that was just my inexperience with wargames. It is a really good game.
I'm jealous, getting to play Pericles with 4 players while I only get to play it solo. (More like experimenting.) I think Pericles is Mark Herman's best game, although the Peloponnesian War is one of my favorite periods so I may be biased. The 7.9 rating on BGG is misleading, I think the game has a reputation for being too much but as with many games you're not becoming proficient at Pericles after a single playing so you have to stick with it to realize the payoff. For anyone interested, if you're into the Pelopponesian War I highly recommend Polis by Devir...A much different take but a great game, and playable solitaire.
This is one of the first war games I purchased when I got back into the hobby. Would love to get a 4 man game together. If anyone is near Charleston SC let me know lol

This is a good idea for a series guys..revisiting certain games. Cheers
welcome to the exclusive 4 player game of Pericles. Your the only group who other than myself played a 4 player game. Great game and deep.
Thanks, always good to hear you liked it better the second time.
So happy you guys like Pericles. It's my favorite game of all i own.
I absolutely love this game! Great to see it here!
I think revisiting and reviewing older games is fantastic. And this format where you compared where you were back then with how you are now was cool.

Well, now I am doubly inspired to play this game someday but also to finally get to WBC. Thanks, gents!

Truly a great game and sadly only ever played it solo.
Love this game! Played it many times 4-player.
I found that for 2 players, an interesting way to play is to play both players on same team and use the provided bots to control the opposing faction.
this looks great, I will have to give it a try. Maybe try to find a group at Gen Con this year to try it

Strategos (Στρατηγός/General) is pronounced strat-ee-goss.
I played it. It was painful...😂
This game is like Hegel to me, I just don’t get it…..
Pericles: phenomenology of the spirit
Thanks guys!
