- The PT/INR is a blood test used to assess how fast the blood clots. It assesses the extrinsic and common pathway of the coagulation cascade. Therefore, the PT/INR assesses clotting Factors VII, I, II, V, and X. Overall, the PT/INR will tell us how well the extrinsic and common pathway work to form a clot and how fast prothrombin turns into thrombin.

Factor V helps prothrombin turn into thrombin. Thrombin plays a vital role in clotting because it helps fibrinogen turn into fibrin. Fibrin is a major player in clot formation because it’s made up of mesh-like strands that helps substances stick together, hence form a clot.
PT stands for prothrombin (time) and INR stands for international normalized ration. The INR is calculated from the PT level and is used in monitoring Warfarin (Coumadin) therapy. A normal PT range is approximately 10-12 seconds. A normal INR level is less than 1.1, and for a patient on Warfarin to be therapeutic the INR should be 2-3.

Literally understood this topic in a heartbeat! Thank you so much!
You've been helping me review NCLEX-RN Sarah. Thank you so much and keep sharing your knowledge to others 😘😘😘
You are alone a Nursing Acadamy. Congratulations.
You are the best. I passed my nclex-pn the first try.
Congratulations,,,,
Its been years since I've studied this material in Nursing school and this topic has always been a confusing challange for me. Nurse Sarahs videos are always informative and presented so clearly and concisely, that after watching them, I now go "ding ding ding"..I get it! I especially like the way the graphics are presented because highlighting the letters in the base words really helps me with the meaning of the acronyms. As always, a big plus is that Nurse Sarah is not only very intelligent and an SME ("Subject Matter Expert") she is also very charming to boot! Please keep up the good work, we all appreciate it!
Hey, everyone! Thanks for watching. Don't forget:
