I'm not a VA by any stretch of the imagination but i'm glad a lot of my same complaints about the voice acting/direction were the same ones Cyyu has. The fact it sounds like they kept the first take on some of these lines astounds me.
I suspect the issue is the fact that they rewrote a lot of the story in response to feedback from the beta, so they likely had to knock out most of the lines in a very short space of time. They probably didnt have the luxury of doing more than one or two takes
Dw, Kuro always listen’s to his players and I’m sure he will change the VA’s
@@ghost-chan402 But it shouldn't be like this in the first place. It isn't like they have never heard the voice acting. They just didn't care enough to fix it. I like the gameplay and aesthetics of the game but the extremely bad pacing and the voice acting is just disgusting to behold.
Taoqi is the biggest offender, all her lines sound like a first take
@@honourwhitehill5918 Exactly on point. The fact that someone within their team, most likely a voice director and/or project lead, had to listen to these lines and think "eh... good enough" astounds me. I personally love the innovation they've done with the gameplay and combat mechanics, the overworld implementation, and the graphics... but my enjoyment really gets bogged down a few notches when it comes to the EN VA's direction and pacing issues with the lore-dumps and story beats. This was probably the first game, in quite a while, that I was forced into switching to JP VAs because of how EN VA sounded like it was hastily slapped together just weeks before official launch.
To anyone reading this: DO NOT SEND HATE TO THE VOICE ACTORS. They did what they were asked (their JOB), and now DESERVE the respect and right to re-record (and be paid), because they're freaking amazing. Seriously, Rebecca Yeo (Yangyang) is an amazing VA and deserves the respect to re-record in her own accent, be paid again, and not have her voice modified to robotic levels.
Now, my personal take is this: if you're going to have BRITISH localization, then allow your VAs to use their BRITISH accents (or Irish or whatever non-US accent they have)!!! It's sad when the highlights of the English dub are the side character VAs -- that's an issue. It would be great if they'd bring the VAs back, and let them re-record with their natural accents (and maybe hire a new voice director, because whoever thought this sounded good shouldn't have a job in voice direction), and pay them. The voices shouldn't have ever been overprocessed either.
If Kuro is willing to scrap the original story (and other things they've redone for the players), then it's only logical that they would re-do the English dub. Just give us a British dub, because the "English" localization sounds fine when a BRITISH accent is used, since the localization is using BRITISH ways of speaking (except when they throw random American idioms in to make it "sound" American, then it's cringe). I'm willing to give the devs time to work on things -- the game did just come out.
Outside of the dub, the game is great -- and the story really picks up in act 5 & 6 -- Genshin had this pacing issue, too (and still does sometimes). Anyway, just imagine Scar's British VA using his British accent...that would be fire.
I just hope Kuro doesn't blacklist CyYu for having an opinion -- imo, he was respectful about it, and not ugly. I would love to see a character in the game voiced by him.
about the vas kuro made a statement addressing it and said going forward they will let them be more natural and consistent with their voice
Omg scar’s VA having an English accent would’ve been awesome. Imo it felt like it was missing something. Overall, the best so far but it was just missing SOMETHING for me.

Yangyang voice actor need to replace 💀
@@diego6991 I'm sure she's actually good, But voice direction can make a good voice actor sound bad
@@diego6991Yangyang has some genuinely good line deliveries
It’s just that it’s very rare
Yea, and let the British be British, like Encore's VA, because I can hear the accent slipping and is putting me a little off. Her original accent is good to begin with.
Yes. Male Rover's voice is so good, And I like that he actually talks in quests
I think it's voice direction more than the VAs themselves. Like how they changed Barbara (imo making her worse), I think the female voices are hurt by trying to appeal to tropes. Particularly YangYang's "cuteness."
100% direction, Encore and Scar have good VA (Encore has the same VA as Regulus fron reverse 1999)
yes Kuro Games already stated most VAs were told to try to don't do their British accents and to be honest that hurts some of their voice acting because they will be focused on not doing British accent instead of doing a good job and expressing the right emotions. There's also some VAs that just can't do that and are just bad sure, but I think forcing a person to focus on not doing their own accent may hurt some of the VAs performance. Also the voice direction for the game idk who was the voice director but the person should have done a better job guiding the VAs as well
The female voices are trying to copy the Chinese voice direction (I play the game with CN voices) but while it works in Chinese it does NOT work in English 💀
Yangyang sounds like she didn't use any pop filter and recorded some talking ASMR, I hate it. Tried to get used to it but ended up changing at Act 3 💀
i will say, barbara’s va change was due to her raspier voice physically hurting the voice actor to do, and i do think they made the right decision by not making laura do that anymore
Okay but I LOVED that one Jing Yuan line. You went full dad voice for just a second, which is very different from his normal kind softer tone. It made me stop and snicker at it for a moment, and I really think it fit. It made him feel a little more human, too.
I don't know Why it's what way, but the first thing i noticed about the voiceover is how some characters have a really "whistling" speech, like, "c", "s" and "t" sounds are really sharp.
And i have a feeling that it might be so grating because of whatever they did in production.
it’s because all the voice actor are forced to do an american accent mostly, while they are all from the UK 😭
That's the 2nd issue about Yangyang's voice -- I tried to continue using the English dub, but the whistling was actually triggering migraines.
It happened a lot in old PS1 and 2 games. Sounds like they just didn't edit the dialogue correctly in the audio OR they didn't give them high-quality mics to use. Even a cheap mic with a pop filter should be able to soften those sounds
If anyone wants to know the current situation, Kuro Games has fired the Main and Second Writers, who let’s not forget rewrote the current story so far in 60 days, and have also fired the Voice Director. They are in the process of hiring for those positions. So if you’re worried about 1.1 let’s give them this time to see if they can recover. There’s actually a lot more problems behind the scenes than this tho. They def rushed the launch but Im hoping they can keep up with the punches.
By the time HSR released they were already finishing up Penacony in internal builds and the story was written well in advance. I assume Kuro did at least something similar, so the effects of those positions changing might not be felt for a while yet. If they really are just writing everything on the go then it's gonna be *rough*
There is no way someone hired now is gonna get to have input on 1.1 without significant crunch lmao. You're not gonna see change until 1.2 or 1.3 at the earliest.
The first part of the story is generic, the main issue is not the story itself. Just how it is presented with pacing. Firing just the writers is not going solve the issue. Game/quest director or who even thought dragging out side quest for so long was good idea was as fault too. There are some good wrttien story in the game. The conversation are so long you stop caring for little reward
I'm pretty sure the part you said about them firing a main story writer is completely misinformation.
Or you're referring to when they fired the CBT1 story writer before CBT1 even started.
Not only is the story not bad, at all, but the main writer is famous for one of the best chapters in their other game, PGR.
and that's why not all the time listening to 'critics' from the fanbase is a good thing, no ideals whatsoever
the game lacks music build up and proper VA acting... yangyang be whispering in every serious situation lmao
What i find funny is that it seems like there are a lot of NPCs who have a british accents, but then none of the playable characters are allowed? It's kinda upsetting as a brit myself i'd love to hear more playable characters with a british accent. But then, i'd love to hear many different accents for the characters.
It's likely that they had specific voice directions for playable characters while for NPCs they just said "here's a scene, improvise a voice". A lot of npcs sound more natural because of that
The NPC’s VA’s did such a great job ngl😭
And the one girl with the scottish accent sounds good
It’s because they know the American audience won’t like it or be put off by it
What? Why would Americans be put off by British accents? @@squiggly4011
Overall I am loving the game and I am a huge lover of Genshin, I want them both to succeed and coexist.
That said while I love the combat, the exploration, the character designs, the visuals overall, ext I also think the story is just missing something.
I think people saying its so bad it cant be fixed are beyond overstating the issue. Its not as good as Genshins opening Act for sure (and lets be real Genshins opening Act was not great either) but it has cool ideas and concepts that just need to be properly built upon more and maybe work on the pacing. I can see the potential going forward.
As for the voice acting...yeah it is a bit rough in the EN. Its seems to me like some of the voice over was rushed and it definetly feels like some of the VAs are struggling to use accents they arent comfortable with. The only one Id say is outright grating at times is Yangyang. Also Rover talks to much, I know we complain that Traveller doesnt talk enough but I feel the right balance was struck with Trailblazer. Sometimes Rover will just have voiceover at times that feels unnecessary XD
I think the big issue with the story is that they made a very common amateur mistake - they tried to create a complex narrative in their introduction. This is something that is very, very difficult to pull off, even for some of the greatest writers out there (Hell, even A Song of Fire and Ice has a relatively simple introductory narrative if you think about it). The reason why this is an issue, is that when an individual is first introduced into a story, there are a *lot* of things they need to learn already (they need to be introduced to the world, the characters, etc.), and they aren't going to be invested in understanding every thread out the gate.
Especially when a lot of those threads are steeped in intrigue/mystery. We just got into the story. We don't have the background of how the world operates enough to try and figure out most of these mysteries ourselves, so we *have* to rely on NPC's to tell us.
They should have started with simple goal, simple narrative, and then built more complexity into the story as it went on. The stuff with the lambs in the village, scar, etc. would have been potentially decent plot points maybe... 8 hours deep into the story? In many ways, I would say what they tried to do in WuWa would be like if Hoyo had made Penacony the first act of Star Rail.
Now, that isn't to say you can't plant some seeds early on for that further depth. Hoyo's writers do it a lot, but it can't be the central plot.
@Kuruyami Yeah I can generally agree with that, still an issue that I think is very fixable by maybe easing up a bit in 1.1 but we'll have to wait and see. I definetly agree with the general consensus that the story is the weakest aspect so far but I do think it's a bit early to write it off as a lost cause like many seem to be doing already.
? rover still talks really inconsistently, it’s not too much at all

the voice acting is very awkward and tense and sometimes doesn’t match the situation, which is why i switched to japanese but the combat is so fun😫😫😫☝️
I already feels weird when I start and hearing the eng kekw... and when I can finally access the settings I immediately just change it lol
i just muted or skip story scenes so i can get back to fighting and exploring lol
If u dont understand japanese then its just more reading.
Scar's voice periodically reminds me of the voice of Jason Dean from Heathers: The Musical. I'm loving it, it works very well on his image in my head
I made a longer comment about the dub, but let's all bask in the moments of CyYu reading the lines -- dude's mad talented.
Well I’m only partway through, but I’d like to say thanks for giving a voice actor perspective. Always neat to get a glimpse at a world you know nothing about. Hope you don’t get hate, any criticism was constructive. And shockingly, people are allowed to have opinions lmao
Okay, my issues with the voice acting makes sense now. I was saying within 20 minutes that the voice acting was weird and it didn't sound like an issue with the actors themselves. I didn't know they recorded in the UK but it makes so much sense why some of them sound so awkward.
I was on the fence on which Rover to pick so i decided to check out the english VA performance. I've heard 1 second of male Rover's voice and decided to pick him. Yup.
Tbh im not very picky with the voice acting and dont really have a problem with most characters voice acting especially npcs. The only characters i kind of have a problem with are yangyang's, since it sounds off when she finishes a sentence and the tone of the voice is always soft regardless of the current situation and female rover's bc it sounded off during the part in the library. Also i do agree with letting the VAs keep the british accent because their british accent is still peeking through anyway and im kinda sick of hearing the american accent in the games im playing. I'm sure the voice acting will get polished over time since it was probably rushed because of reworking the story and they didnt want to keep people waiting too long.
😮😊
I think wuwa has a promising future
The devs are listening to the criticism.
It makes me think that I shouldn’t drop this game cuz it’ll get better.
The voice of yangyang is awful, she does sound cute sometimes but hearing her feels like she doesn't know how to adjust her voice according to the situation, it's like rover is toddler and she talking all cutesies when we are in the middle of the war...there's no emotions
YangYang feels too forced on us. Like she's the unofficial 'canon' love interest the protagonist is supposed to pick in games with large party pools.
Yangyang feels a bit like Pela to me for some reason, especially the shyness. And Pela is a good character, but I wouldn't want her as a permanent companion for the MC, you know? It's a shame that Chixia is not the one hanging out with us for the majority of the early story, I like her a lot more
I prefer the JP dub for this. I hope they redo the EN dub and have the cast do their voices naturally so they can really be the characters they cast. Basically do what HoYo does. If this means Encore sounds like Tataru from XIV, I have no problem with this.
Learning with other's mistakes is very valuable. Great video, it's really nice to watch you analyzing the nuances.
Whoever said it doesn't get better is full of shit. The last part was actually pretty good. The beginning, like 70%, were just dogwater. I recommend just watching the last story bit on youtube if you really don't intend on coming back to see if you like it (cinematic stuffs).
Imo the reason the beginning is “bad” is because they tried to do too much at once world building AND building intrigue. World building is generally already pretty dry itself, but trying to add the mystery and intrigue this early makes it a formula for information overload. In which case, most people just ignore it.
I’m more happy about the 100% guaranteed weapon in the banner over everything else. But the game is really good. Genshin is good, but WUWA right now is my favorite. I still play Genshin and hsr, but I have done everything there so wuwa is so nice to olay
Yo fun fact for y’all you can actually glitch into the blocked off area before unlocking it with story progression; you have to go to the really high cliff beside it, and glide around the barrier. It does require some stamina upgrades though.
personally im worried that if they do change the voice direction later it won't affect the early 1.0 story, or that, because every character's combat voice lines are already done, they won't change those. and that's the big issue for me, the combat voicelines kinda suck for the most part. the lines themselves aren't bad but for some of them it sounds like they just recorded the first take of the line and then said "yup ok thank VA that's good" and then the VA is like "hey wait i could have done way better" and then the director goes "nah its good rn, okie byeeeee" and then we ended up with the voices we have now
It is not localization issue. If anything English translation makes the story easier to understand, sounds crazy right? Because the way it was written in Chinese is a werid mix of classical literature and made-up words...for a huge chunk of it especially in world building. Its like speaking in riddles. BUT in English they translated most of the made-up words into regular English like 'Sentinel', so it was actually not that bad.
btw I'm Lv28 and finished chapter 6, the cut-scenes are cool but skipped most dialogs whenver possible, just like playing Diablo.
which diablo? all of them? I really liked diablo 2 though.
It seems like Lingyang purposely does not talk like a normal person. But knowing his backstory, that makes sense why he doesn't talk naturally like the others. He also goes around uttering a lot of blessings and well wishes to his clients (makes more sense contextually in Chinese culture) in a formal way, so those sayings sound a bit strange when translated in English since in Western culture, it would be said in more casual terms.
There's something preventing me from trying out the game and I honestly am not sure what exactly it is. I have seen plenty of perspectives and criticisms can be applied to any game out there, but there's a BUT that I can't quite pinpoint. It's nice to see that Kuro have been so responsive to the launch issues, but learning of possible and questionable decisions leading up to launch has also been a little concerning.
40:29 - Aside from my own enjoyment, I want nothing more than for me to enjoy a game I like with my partner, and so far, he’s more into WuWa than I am. So, yeah, until he finds another game like this, I think I’ll be enjoying it a while yet.
EARLYYYY, Hope you have a good day cyyuuuu💜
The voice acting gets so much better in this game. Yangyang, Chixia and Taoqi are defidently the weakest in the cast so it's wierd to me that Chixia and especially Yangyang are featured so heavily in the story. People would have a better opinion of the voice acting if characters like Encore and Aalto who give a killer performance in Act 5 didn't come into the story so late.
The teleportation got me too. 😂
So I did notice some vas in this game also act in reverse 1999, and some of them are using the same voices. chae lim is in this game (sonetto in rev 1999) and I think she plays jheling? It's a very similar voice. She dips into an English accent more in rev 1999
I think the main issue with the EN VA is mostly the direction and the lack of balance with the quality control. Some Recordings sound good. great even. but the ONE character they had to make sure was nearly perfect, Yangyang, felt like they barely gave it any quality control at all. and when you play as her, you can hear her potential. They are doing her SO dirty. It's so frustrating how it feels like they didn't care when it comes to her. I hope they do better in the future.
I stay up at night thinking about how we almost got british Scar, why are the directors obssessed with american accent
56:22 LMFAO, im pretty soft spoken and monotonous myself but this is on another level
I also adore the fact that I dont have to pickup drops
CYYUS WHAT A GUY FOR DOING THE COMPARISONS
wuwa’s voice direction seems like they’re afraid of using any base in the voice at all. especially yangyang’s. and i feel like the npc’s voicelines are better than the playable characters atm
This game's voice acting makes me miss Paimon's stupid yapping. Atleast she makes me feel something.
The last 2 chapters feel a lot better, but dear lord, the VA direction was God awful for EN. It's the biggest weakness with the story. If you read what's being said.... it's good writing. If you listen to what's said... it just sounds so flat a lot of the time.

I would like to apologize for that, I'm also guilty of getting heated at basic criticism over this game. Honestly a lot of it comes from the absurd number bots that just send random hate comments ruining people's patience and getting snippy at the littlest thing.
To be honest, I totally agree with you about voice acting in WuWa. But I have to add, that worse than YangYang for me is the voice of Female Rover, I had a feeling that she’s trying to imitate Stelle 😅
LAMENT
Wait... Too soon
The EN VAs did a really good job and i love it!. The concern/issue with Yangyang, i don't think its the VA but rather the direction that they told the VA to do her voice. She is clearly very capable and you can definitely hear it at certain parts of the story. However, for some reason the team who was in-charge of her dubbing direction had the VA go through that format of voicing the character. I do hope she stays and I do hope they re-record her lines & allow her to really shine more like the other EN VAs in the game.
I'm using japanese VAs, and the one for Calcharo is soooooo good omg. I don't know what the eng one sounds like yet, but maybe he's good too. I've been running around and farming mainly, filling up as many trophies as possible xD
JP VA of Calcharo is Toshiyuki Morikawa, the guy who voiced Sephiroth in Final Fantasy, he's absolutely iconic!
@tite93 oh nice. I didn't play any FF games so I didn't know
Yangyang voiceover is so damn slow and monotonous on every single scenario, I cannot tolerate her for long
I think it’s because the Va is trying to talk in an accent she’s not used to, the director should have kept their actual accent’s.
It feels like she’s speaking slow so she won’t slip into her actual accent.
The japanese voice for yangyang feels the same I think atp the script is just rlly bad

The story got much much better after Scar.
As someone who got annoyed with some of the voice acting (Looking at you Yangyang and FemRover at the library!), there are some scenes whete the voice acting is quite decent, maybe even good.
I'm still playing the game, but it won't be the time consumer that is Star Rail for me.

Not the fault of VA's. The problem is with the game.
I wouldn’t say the game. It’s moreso the voice direction.
@@projectmoonsleeperagent I would say add one thing, bad voice mixing. And if VA's new then they would learn from it. I liked few voice though. But sometimes it feels the voice is too much suppressed in game.

Honestly i cant help but compare wuwa with genshins voice acting or even hsr, and how they manage to pick the most suitable and talented voices for the job. Wuwa sounds a bit dull in comparison and jesus christ YANG YANG. All the others are fine but I cannot stand her too quiet, monotonous voice. Can’t stand her character at this point ngl
Every woman character in genshin I hate because I cant stand their voice its worse than any little girls 80-90s tv show, the only woman voice in that game I can stand is Lisa but her voice LINES make me hate her TOO 😅 at least I can play this game without wanting to put the squeaker characters out of their dog toy misery
The 1.0 Genshin voice over was also pretty meh tbh. Nowadays, they're extremely good at getting the voices right though.
The localization actually makes the dialogues much easier to understand than the CN version, the CN ones right now look like they are trying too hard to stay mysterious in wording. Great stream though
I'm enjoying playing the game so far but I have to agree that the voice acting is kinda making me space out. When I'm going through the heavy dialogue parts I have to play a different game or watch something at the same time or I'm lost

Along with letting the VAs use their natural accents I wish Kuro would be less focused on making the mouths match the dialogue. I kind of think it’s hindering the VAs performance. Genshin doesn’t give a crap about it and I think it gives the VAs more freedom.
Even tho it has 240 "resin" fighting bosses to level up characters takes 60 of it. And more things require resin to do
In my opinion storytelling in the game it just sucks. It's like they're trying to retell a completely children's fairy tale in adult words - everything seems kind of ridiculous and out of place 🤷
My understanding is the studio was out of money and about to go bank rupt and that's why they released it. They literally couldn't wait
From what I’ve read it was scheduling issues. They had a deadline to release it and the latest would coincided with Genshin Natlan
I got jiyan and his weapon in 3 rolls💀 i was just running around like "genshin could never" after i said it i got jiyan💀
Wuthering waves Said
i could
DAYUM! Got rewarded for glazing xD
How is this a "genshin could never"?
@@dyastro7479 the NPC is very expressive unlike genshin
After playing Act 6 I really think this game is great. They put so much effort into that act its a shame that some people probably dropped it earlier in the story because of the info dump. I really rec sticking with it until then
As much as i enjoy the game, sadly the voice acting wasn't something i could in the en part and the story was just meh, for me. But the game itself is really good, they will get better at it, I have my hope on them.
Too bad I do think the story get better especially once scar shows up, but I can see why someone like CyYu would find it hard to slog through the super slow beginning.
Bendy and ink machine issues flash backs
I like the dub. The voices could use some work yes. A lot of work actually. But there are parts I like. Also the story is fine but personally how they wrote the script is what gets me.
I lost my 50/50 to Verina. Fortunately it was early (20 pulls) so now I'm guaranteed Jiyan but I have over 40 more pulls to go to get the General
YOUR FINAL TIME?! WHY
FR LIKE WYM FINAL TIME CYYU LMAO
I mean, you can only cover so many live service games at once
+ He already has significant progress on Genshin anyways. It's kinda iffy to be playing 2 games that are alike at the same time
Personally loving WuWa more, but yeah...
He doesn't like it, says it's not for him, primarily because he can't get into the story and even after several hours of play it doesn't make sense. The Lingyang quest was the straw that broke the camel's back for him.
Edit: he did say on Twitter that he might stream it again soon, since he liked the fourth act
He made an update on twitter, he'll be playing it again and changed his mind bc he played it offline and he liked Chapter 4.
He said he might stream WuWa again sooner than he thought after he play ACT 4 off stream and if your wondering how i know this i read at his twitter
Don't stop playing, there's more content 🎉
Is this game worth playing? I couldn't even get it to download. I got space for it, but it's been stuck on pending.
I, personally, really like open world games. Often leaving the main story for three years later because I can’t help but explore every other thing. So yes, I would recommend it, you just might find some bugs here and there that are gonna get fixed soon enough.
12:22 it is giving reverse ffxiv ARR to HW voice actor changes. the faked american accents kinda stink of it being a marketing strat thats going to fail. i wish they do let the actors use their natural accents. i play in JP so it doesnt affect me but man.
The answer is muppet
hes struggling to get jiyan while im struggling to get aalto 😭😭 please I just want silly goofy man
I endured the English dub for my first session since it was lagging and I wanted to get to a good spot to do any settings changes. I honestly don’t even remember what they sound like in English as I switched it over to Japanese
So while I’m not discrediting any of the complaints, especially when some come from a voice actor, it just comes off as odd when for me I don’t even have an issue with the VA work. But again, that’s cause I’m not playing EN dub.
It’s still brand new, it’s a live service or whatever so they will probably fox the issue going forward no different than other games might, so I’m not taking this as the reason to drop the game.
It’s still fun for me, I don’t play in EN so that’s not an issue. Only complaints would be optimization which to me can mean that maybe they should have left it in development for a while longer. But I’m still gonna keep playing
Is it just me or the Bei Ji character sounded like bored Joel
You cannot tell somebody to get to Act: (Whatever) when the time sink is already too huge. Remember that the cover of a book will always be the most piece of info that newcomers will base the contents on. The "don't judge a book by" statement is not applicable to real situations when all the pages inside are still a complete drag.
Lingyang needed to shut up half of the story run-time. I cannot believe they allowed any of this to enter the game and thought the story itself gets fixed by allowing story skipping.
Lingyang was pretty good imo
Most his dialogue ends up referencing his “beast or human” arc in some way or another
Its so weird that Jiyan seems more General like than Jing Yuan, but hey Jing Yuan is always just sleepy, when times needed the General of Luofu, he really do go all out except in meta lol.
I love how jiyan latter name is literally jingyuan but toke three latters out of his name
Hopefully you get em next pull
