    a couple of questions, I have already got the front differential, what do you put two washers per side? and when I tested the car, the engine was going backwards, I had to change the engine, change the cables from the ends a and c? Thank you

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The washers depend on the gear mesh of each car so you'll have to experiment it and see if the gears are connecting and leave a good enough space to move freely.
      As for the cable, yes, swap A and C if it runs in opposite direction. Calibrate the ESC first to confirm that you got the correct braking direction.

    Hi Beaver, I really enjoy your informative videos. I have a question and was wondering if you could help. I bought a Mini Q Q9 kit and finished building it. But, I'm having problems with sticky drivetrain and sticky ball diff. Did your car come pre built or kit? Anyway, the gear mesh between the shaft and the diff and the mesh between the pinion great and spur gear are horrific. Did you experience this with your car? I'm not sure what to do to solve the problem besides upgrading all plastic gears to metal. I don't think there's much difference between Q7 and Q9. What do you think?

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello. Mine is pre-built from Sinohobby.
      Q9 is unofficial name of Q7 with probably some upgrades depending on vendor. To put it simply, Q9 is Q7 that doesn't come from Sinohobby. If gear mesh between shaft and diff are fine then you're lucky. The tight gear mesh between spur and motor is the easiest thing to fix. Almost all the car have it nowadays, that's why motor mount is adjustable. You can move the motor out a bit so it's not too tight. Loosen the screw on the top and nudge the motor out. You don't have to tighten the top screw on motor mount to the max, it'll hold just fine. Here's how to adjust gear mesh. It's from different car but method is the same. th-cam.com/video/bQiR-cfBnvw/w-d-xo.html
      Changing plastic pinion to metal won't solve gear mesh problem You'll have to adjust it anyway.

    • @Diamondbac
      @Diamondbac 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BeaversHobby After lots of patience and tweaking, I finally got a driveable car. I ended up changing both spur and pinion gear from Firelap and they mesh perfectly. The stock ball diffs were horrible and were grinding away the shaft gears, so I swapped in bevel diffs instead but that needed the shaft to be shortened to make it work. Also, there were many places that were binding. Despite having lots of aluminum parts that look fancy, the quality really isn't that good. I have a monster in my hands now though as I slapped on a Leopard 15000kv motor. I wanted something other than a Mini Z but didn't want to dish out so much cash on GL racing or Atomic. Thanks for your help!

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Diamondbac Glad it works! Thanks for the heads up on Q9. I really didn't expect the diffs to be the same as my offbrand Q5 metal chassis that eat away the pinions. 15000KV will turn your car in to rocket ship. Good luck with the project!

      @BeaversHobby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sinohobby one way is good I just had the 3Racing at the time so I used it. (Sinohobby front one way was in my WLtoys). However nowadays Sinohobby doesn't give you washers anymore so you'll have to prepart 6x8x0.2mm washers or shims to make it fit perfectly.

    How does the Mini-Q Q7 BL compare tomthe Atomic Amz BL in regards of of a drift car? For the mini-q there exists an upgraded TR-Q5OP version with Alu wishbones with adjustable camber and toe.

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AMZ is better in terms of steering angle and turning radius so it's easier to drift in 50:50. However AMZ is harder to make CS mod. It'll work but need a bit of tinkering. Q7 is easier at doing CS.
      Driving is very similar. So if you want to do hi-speed 50:50 then AMZ is the way to go. If you want to do CS, Q7 it is.
      If you ask about BZ the belt-driven car then it's belt drive and doesn't have front one way which will make drifting a bit harder.
      TR-Q5OP is Q5 which is the older version of Q7 without double wishbone suspension so the handling is not as good. However it looks very cool from all the metal parts. To be honest the only part that makes a difference is aluminium motor mount which can be bought separately and installed on Q7 too.
      Q7 can adjust everything too, camber, toe and even droop. You can also fill the shocks with diff. gear grease to make it works like oil shock. That's why it drives very similar to AMZ.

      Same car, Q9 is Q7 with some metal upgrades, some good some unnecessary. Looking at what you'll get alone Q9 is a bit better because you don't have to upgrade the universal shafts or CVD out of the box, it'll come with metal already. Now a few questions:
    1. Where did you get the turnbuckles for the steering? I cant find them anywhere, and its weird that Sinohobby didnt include them from the start.
    2. Did you use grease in the shocks?
    3. For the springs, i need to clarify. Do you mean that the stock springs in the front are soft springs and the stock springs in the back are hard springs? They are not the same?
    4. Where did you get your camber gauge?
    Thanks a lot for this video. Especially the suspension settings. Actually, i am setting up my Q7 for grip, not drift. So i intend to use your suspension settings, but reversed! Hehe 😜
    Good luck with your study, my friend! Will look forward to your return!

      It's on back-order at the moment. Hopefully it'll be in stock soon.
      2.No.... or rather not yet. You might need it for touring car racing though. Look at Atomic AMZ. There're many greases you can use from there.
      3. The springs are the same. I only adjust the preload ring on the shocks to have different tension. Again, if you want different springs please look at Atomic AMZ.
      4. Camber gauge is from Yeah Racing. You can find it on rcmart.com or even ebay. It's a bit of a struggle to use with small car though.
      Thank you for watching and I hope you'll be patiently waiting for my return. 😃

    Thanks for the informative video. Just ordered a mini-Q slash and going brushless with it from the start. Seems like a nice hobby next to flying rc helicopters and can drift in the living room on those cold and rainy days.
    One question about the brushless setup.
    I bought a 5700Kv motor together with a hobbywing esc (love hobbywing have them on all my heli's) is this a good starting point KV for a slow/technical drifter I can always buy another if needed but from the 3 kv options this was the lowest. 9000 and 12000kv seems a bit to much for drifting in a smaller area.

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For drifting with this chassis 5700KV is OK but you'll have to limit the throttle to get it under control. Most drifter will stick with 3500KV but it's not always in stock.
      www.miracle-mart.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=67_74_322_433&products_id=14065 (it's in stock right now though). Anyway, if you feel like wanting to use full 100% of the motor then get this 3500KV. Each brand seems to have different power output for the KV rating.
      I'm using Surpass Hobby 6000KV in my drifter right now and it's really good. Although keep in mind that Surpass is a bit less powerful than other motors, Atomic and Scorpion have very good power and seems that their KV rating is true.
      Which 5700KV you bought by the way?
      Also, good choice with the Hobbywing. It's the most reliable with most value for money I've ever use.

    • @boy6named6zoen6

      Ohhhh.. that one. The KV rating seems to be good and powerful. But be careful with the wires though, they are very brittle. Be very gentle while soldering them otherwise you might end up breaking them like I did.
      Anyway, get the 3500KV if you can just in case if 5700KV turns out to be too much to handle.

      It depends on the version of the car you choose. If you choose the RTR version with remote control like mine, you'll only need new rear wheels so they won't rub against the suspension. There's problem with newer batch of the car, they give you wrong wheels. Here's the wheels you need, Offset 1 and above. bit.ly/2nsCaCg While you're at it, change the front wheels too so you have matching set, again, offset at least 1. bit.ly/2WSecRf
      Next, get metal swing shafts too because now they give you plastic ones that don't last long. I use these, they are cheap and work pretty well. bit.ly/2ksB60i
      That's it for RTR version.
      If you get the ARR version with ESC and motor only, either brushed or brushless, you'll need a transmitter too. I recommend Radiolink RC4GS. It does everything you need. bit.ly/2WSjb0G
      Apart from those, some cosmetics if you want to change the body so it looks like scale model, check out body from Mini-Z or Firelap like this. bit.ly/2Jzo4Kk
      Hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

    Hello ! Thank you for these videos more than interesting! I wanted to know what you thought about the TR-Q5OP-BL Mini-Q. Is it better in your opinion than the Mini-Q TR-Q7BL? Do you think the changes are compatible? Thank you for your answers !

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Q7 is far better car than Q5. Now the suspension is double wishbone so the wheels has more contact to the road due to more flexible articulation. Q5 is very old design and Q5OP-BL is Q5 with aluminium parts and brushless motor. The base chassis plate is the same so front and rear gearbox + suspension are interchangeable. Well.. Q7 actually is Q6 or Q5OP with double wishbone suspension upgrade.
      Nowadays Q5OP isn't worth the money anymore. Just get the Q7BL (brushless) if you want brushless motor out of the box. You'll have to add your own transmitter and receiver though.

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, it comes as a normal 4WD racing car (or what we call touring car). Don't worry about that. The tyres that come with the car is pretty good but this slick (no pattern) will wear out very quickly so be prepared to get some spares. Look at Mini-Z and Atomic tyres. They are good and have many choices for pattern and grip level.
      Brushless is faster than brushed. Motor is low maintenance so you don't have to clean it... ever. It's also more efficient because there's no brush that rub the motor shaft creating friction that take away some power.

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Q7 is better than a maxed a out MA020 DWS. It's comparable to Atomic AMZ but got the edge for fully adjustable suspension without having to buy more parts. Suspension upgrades? You don't really need to upgrade Q7. Just tweak it. Take a look at AMZ springs and you can add grease to the shocks to make them act like oil filled shocks.
      Q5OP is about level of MA015 without DWS, it uses the same (old) kingpin suspension design but Q5OP can adjust camber and toe more easily. For Q5OP you might want to upgrade the suspension kit to Q7 (whenever it's available) just like MA010/015 users want to install DWS kit and front inboard suspension on their car.

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Q5 uses old Kingpin suspension design where there are poles and springs just like normal Mini-Z AWD. Q7 uses double wishbone suspension where there are control arms and make the car stick to the ground much better, like at the rear of Mini-Z AWD DWS.
      Atomic produces nice cars from AMZ which is now become their entry level but with proper tuning it's good for anything from touring to drifting. BZ was the first belt-drive micro car and SZ is their new flagship shaft drive.
      Q7 is on par with AMZ and it's a bit easier to drive maybe partly because the adaptable rear toe (which I first though it was design flaw).
      As for drifting, nothing beats Q7 in AWD drift. If you want RWD there's Atomic DRZ which is the first ever micro RWD drifter in production.

    • @flyingformation1878
      @flyingformation1878 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot for your answer! I am knowledgeable about RC cars but I don't know the micro models very well. I think that micro cars are truly fascinating and I want to stick with them for the future. This is why I am doing my homework to understand what my options are. I love the Atomic models. Unfortunately the DRZ does not use a bell crank, so I wouldn't buy it. I like the AMR (2wd) and the BZ. The SZ is cool too. I am tempted to try one of these as a drift platform. They seem to be perfect out of the box (I mean with no quality issues or parts to replace). I can't be bothered with modding a model too much. I need all the electronic of course. Can you suggest an online shop to buy motor, esc and servo? I don't even know what size I really need!

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DRZ uses sliding rack steering to achieve near parallel steering angle. The AMR is also a nice car (all Atomic cars are well designed) but it doesn't have enough angle for drifting and need a lot of modding to be able to do so. DRZ is like AMR with different front end.
      BZ and SZ can drift too but if you want to start with drifting and maybe convert it back to touring, AMZ is still a great choice with bell crank steering upgrade and wide chassis upgrade if you need one.
      By the way, Atomic is not problem-free either. I've seen many people got sent wrong parts, parts that not fit properly and not working electronics time after time. So I guess everything is a gamble these days.
      The motor is generally 130 size. The brushless mostly branded as 1410 size from Scorpion and Surpass Hobby. As for Leopard hobby it's called 1625.
      You can find motor and ESC on Atomic official website miracle-mart.com , other places are rcmart.com (for Atomic motor) and asiatees.com (Scorpion motor).You can find Surpass Hobby 1410 motor on Banggood.com and ebay.
      You can use XC-10A ESC with Surpass motor, it's on Aliexpress and Hobbyking.com . It's small ESC with a lot of programming but not much power.
      Servo is generally 5g servo where you can find it easily on ebay, banggood or get a Atomic servo from miracle-mart.com .
      There are also some other premium grade electronics from RC-Aurora, GL, X-Power ppm-rcracing.com/categories/RC%252dAurora-racing/Motor-and-Electric/ gl-racing.com/store/electronics-motors-c-11/?zenid=08ntq6crq7t112fe6m7tba3db4 , www.x-powerrc.com/product_detail.php?id=629 .
      XRX produces some great stuffs too facebook.com/XRX-563467370501080/ .
      Actually there are a lot to choose from.

      I forgot to mention the size of ESC. Just use anything that fits inside the body shell. Atomic and GL are really good but expensive. What I find working great is Hobbywing Ezrun 18A taken out of the case and re-solder proper size wiring for micro car.

    • @flyingformation1878
      @flyingformation1878 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for the links and the tips. I am amazed to see that X-Power sells a sensored micro motor. I am aware that RC cars are never hassle free, however there are more and less sensible choices you want to avoid trouble. I am not too concerned about the price because I only want one (...max 2) RC car and I want to enjoy it. I do not like collecting them. By the time you buy 3 crappy RTR you could have afforded a pro level car. If I decide to save some money, I will save it on the chassis. If you want to enjoy yourself you need decent electronic. There is always a way to fix a mechanical problem but ESC, servo, etc must be good from the start. I love 2WD vehicles because they are simple and require less maintenance. You know the golden rule "less to go wrong". I hope you don't mind if I ask you some more question in the future. Bye for now Pal!

      Anything that doesn't exceed the battery tray dimension is OK. 15 mm x 50 mm, height doesn't matter. There's Giant Power 2S Lipo 300mAh with 35C discharge. It should be enough for every need.
      The other way it to remove the tray entirely and stick the battery down with double sided tape. That way you won't have size restriction as long as the battery isn't bigger than the chassis.

      2. Good drift tyres are from Kyosho. I suggest you get the wheels with it as well but the wheels depend on the body as you need to choose the right offset. You can get all of them in Banzaihobby.
      Here are the bodies bit.ly/2CGgozp .

      3: Some drive shafts from Aliexpress are too short for this car, If you don't want to buy from Banggood that I gaveyou earlier then buy the shafts for WLtoys and roll the dice. I don't know which shop sells the good one.
      4: No, it's equipped with ball bearings already. (Have you watched the review?)
      5: Choose 300-400mAh lipo from the shop of your choise. I don't know who ship this aborad anymore.
      Bangood also have Giantpower 300mAh bit.ly/340Liik . Turnigy nanotech from hobbyking.com is also good.

    So beaver... I'm a huge fan. Recently discovered your page and feel like ive literally had my mind blown from your videos! I love drifting! Your cs videos are so great! Ive heard you over and over say q7 cs kit is your favorite. Hence this new video. You were super quick in response to my first comment. I guess what I'm asking is could you summarize the car. Like go on banggood aand make a shopping cart of everything you used to make this q7 the cs drift monster it is? Or have you considered building another one? Like for sale? Your skill, workmanship and knowledge is so superior to the builders of these cars from factory it's crazy! Why can't i buy a car like you built???!!!! Sorry for the long post. Final question. Would you consider selling the car? If not could you post the full build parts list? Thanks so much man! Huge fan!

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you find my content interesting and helpful.
      This car is a combination between Banggood and other places. Some of the parts are unfortunately out of stock for really long time now. I'm trying to find as much as I can out of it so here it is:
      The car: I use Q7 RTR so it has 2-in-1 unit with smaller footprint and weight goo.gl/7XgTrD
      Important upgrade, front one way: goo.gl/odJ9bU
      Wheels from Mini-Z, you need 2 sets of this goo.gl/2ALvkC
      Tyres from Mini-Z, one set has 4 tyres goo.gl/NZHtWF
      These are what you need to have 50:50 drift car. Then we go in to CS.
      CS kit is out of stock everywhere so you'll have to make your own.
      Let's not make one out of original stuff. Should something go wrong you won't be able to play for a long time.
      First get a new spur gear, now only 98mm wheelbase is available: goo.gl/RLk3H1
      Some plastic gear to mod: goo.gl/LsCzQV
      This is tutorial for Mini-Q/Mini-Z rear gear pinion mod th-cam.com/video/pZxPKXgPvt0/w-d-xo.html
      Then a new diff. goo.gl/f2ZTtB
      And tutorial to make standard diff in to CS, basically you need to make the gear slimmer. th-cam.com/video/t6PiUq-_9lI/w-d-xo.html
      That's it for CS drift. Q7 has full adjustability so you can experiment with the suspension setup (or just follow what I use in this video).
      Optional extra:
      Flysky GT3C radio for better/easier adjustment: goo.gl/7aj9Yq

      @@BeaversHobby sweet man! That's the next best thing is knowing what all i need! Once more really appreciate you and your amazing reviews. 1 last question i hadn't thought of earlier. Would you stll go q7 with mods for cs or go mini z rwd? Mods for steering angle end what just tires maybe? The cs really looks worth the extra time and effort but if the rwd is just some simple mods. Could be a better starter option.

    • @timfunk2516
      @timfunk2516 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also i can get the front 1way but the rear diff is out of stock. What is your blue gear set in the rear?

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mini-Z RWD is not as easy as you think because it has proprietary electronics and that is hard to mod. There's someone on TH-cam already did that but he essentially use only rear motor case and everything else is from 3D printing and standard RC electronics. I think if you search "MR03 RWD drift" you'll find it.
      RWD and AWD drift are quite different too. AWD is faster and easier while RWD looks more elegant and more like real car. So you can choose your journey as you like according to your driving style.
      I actually have Atomic DRZ (1st ever production 1/28 RWD drift chassis) and it's amazing. Here's the review. th-cam.com/video/LXy_h_yoqy0/w-d-xo.html
      But AWD drifting is amazing in it's own way.

      Thanks for heads up. Unfortunately banggood doesn't sell it anymore. There's only brushless ARR version available right now. bit.ly/2MuzSim You'll need a radio to go with it but on the bright side, you can get a good radio from the get go.
      The RTR is probably out of production by now so you can try and look for it somewhere else like Aliexpress.

    Thanks Beaver, excellent video as usual. I had a TT02 in the past, but the lack of time and space made me sell it. I followed your recommandation and bought a Q1, just to see if I like drift with 1/28, and the answer is yes !
    Now I seriously want do buy a real "serious" car, and after watching your videos I seriously think buying a Q7, and this is where things are going bad : I search for an ARR brushed kit or just chassis (I plan to use my own transmitter), but I can't figure out when it's a copy or an original, and there is no availability on Banggood (this one : fr.banggood.com/Sinohobby-MINI-Q-Slash-TR-Q7B-128-Carbon-Fiber-Racing-Brushed-RC-Car-p-1194842.html?rmmds=search&cur_warehouse=CN)
    The other question is the availability of spare parts : as a beginner with 2 sons (4 and 12 old age), it's an important point for me.
    So, in 2020, is the Q7 still the best choice for a beginner who plans to keep his car for a long time, or is there an alternative ? This Q7 seems to be very mistake-friendly, which seems a very good start, but you may have a better idea. I don't want to buy a mini-z, I like too much to disassemble and tweak ;)
    Thanks for your help, and keep doing those excellent videos !

      Another option to consider is Atomic AMZ, but it's in kit and you'll have to choose many parts yourself along with building it. Here's the review. th-cam.com/video/u7Jsw8IW-zY/w-d-xo.html
      Spares are still available too. Check it out in miracle-mart.com .
      It doesn't have full adjustability but handling wise AMZ is a bit better than Q7 because it's lighter.
      Also this car is really tough and it's a proven chassis from all the racing it has done since its debut. If you already have tools, 2s battery, charger and you want to use Mini-Z body this will be a better option in long run.
      As for the Q7, Banggood sells original Mini-Q Q7 by which I mean directly from Sinohobby with no upgrade fitted to the car. So you'll have to upgrade the drive shafts to metal as well. The spares are on Aliexpress since it shares with other Mini-Qs as well and the suspension arms have no direct spare but rather metal upgrade instead.
      www.aliexpress.com/item/33012812405.html?
      You can also look this car up on Aliexpress with the name "Slash", other name is Mini Q9 which is not from Sinohobby but it's metal upgrade version of this car (some shops don't even have metal upgrade but call it Q9 anyway). I won't say it's copy because it's probably comes out of the same factory.
      For example this one is Q7 with different electronics than Banggood version. You should ask the seller if it got metal driveshafts though since it looks like plastic in the photos. www.aliexpress.com/item/32994662966.html

      @@BeaversHobby Hello Beaver,
      My Atomic AMZ is running fine with a beautiful Kyosho metallic orange Toyota 86 body, thanks to you ! Still a lot of progress to do on my driving skills, but it's really fun and I like it very much. The funny part is I did not had the same issues as you on the AMZ at all.
      And now I have the AMZ, I'm looking at the GLD :D

      This one is good as it is and quite hard to chop the aluminium bulkhead. So I decided to do RWD mod on WLtoys instead.
