This man has inspired me to look at the world in a whole different way,so grateful for all your hard work you had done just to show us ppl we could have a simplicity, freedom.
Bob also seems to bring others of like minds together.. I went to a caravan last year and felt like part of a community fast.. we were all so different yet togetherness is what we shared.. it was an amazing experience.. if you have the slightest reservations let them go and attend!
Sadly we have been brainwashed for materialism. Very good video Bob! My favorite quote is from Bob Dylan: "A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.”
Sort-of reminds me about an old song from 1976: "Faster Horses, Younger Women, Older Whiskey, More Money" -Tom T. Hall He was lovingly known as the Poet-Laureate Of Country Music 🤩
Downsizing to live in my suv, by necessity not choice. What do I really need takes priority over what I can fit in it. Love your content. I live with & take care of my 86 y/o mother with dementia. Beautiful apartment near the beach. Sadly, when she goes, I will need to go elsewhere. Grateful for a decent paid for suv. Thank you for these quotes ✌
Great quote and makes one really think. I used to say when I saw someone with a bmw "man they are rich" then someone told me once they are not rich, they are in debt lol! Totally opened my eyes and so did this quote. Thanks Bob for ALL you do!
Right you are, Bob. While I cannot say that I am a true minimalist - I do still own a few more things than the folks who 'only own 100 things' - the BEST thing I ever did was get rid of 95% of my stuff. We don't realize how much energy we put into our stuff until it's gone. I don't buy anything now unless I really need it. And, when I do go shopping, I ask myself what the simplest, most cost-effective way to fulfill the need is? I couldn't care less what someone thinks about my stuff. Thanks, as always.
This quote helps clarify why shifting to a minimalist lifestyle is psychologically challenging. In the hierarchy of needs, (Maslow), after the essentials of food, water, shelter, etc., are met, we tend to misrepresent to ourselves our needs versus our wants...speaks volumes about our inner hurt and insecurity.
I’m in the process of packing all my things to move and have been thinking do I really need all this stuff….then I saw this video. It’s tough tho because it’s a lot of sentimental things that were handed down from loved ones who passed or things I picked up and have memories attached :(
I understand your feelings. My parents and brother passed and I had some of their belongings. I had to move cross country out of necessity and fit things only in my car. Many tears were shed and sometimes I am reminded of what I left behind but I have to keep going forward. Wanted you to know I understand completely.
Hey Bob! I’m at the Michigan Beet Harvest! Thank you for all your videos and information about this gig! I’m connecting with other nomads and I get to spend some time in a beautiful new place. I even got to cross the border into Canada my first time out of the country! Thank you for all you do!
You are a veritable treasure of both wisdom and charity. Your deep concern for others is so appealing and rare these days. Thank you Bob for all you do
Thank you Bob, I will be semi retired as of the first of the year, and my goal was to begin reading again, I used to love it! So I think the first rider I may pick up is Mark Twain! God bless you‼️‼️
Yep materialism can be measured simply by looking at the loading of house garages when open; sometimes you can't even get in, as a European I've always been impressed by people's level of consumption! Full-time RVing will definitely get you back to what you really need!
This has had me thinking all day long. In many traditional ways, I live very simply: my car is a 2002 Jeep Wrangler, my RV is a 2003 Winnebago (both owned since 2005), my "sticks and bricks" is a 1 br/1ba cabin ranch ... but it sits on a bit over 8.25 lovely acres in NW Montana. My furniture is minimal and old but comfy. I don't care about fashion or jewelry. I DO care about electronics and I think it is part of my DNA kind of ... my day job as a work from home contract software developer ... by choice vs a corporate job but still ... it affords me a fair amount of spendable $$. And I do spend the $$ on various electronics: camera gear, iPad(s), Garmin watch, GPS trackers for my dog and cat, security cameras, motion detector on my long driveway ... so electronically, I am NOT a minimalist. But my electronics are not visible to the outside world. They are important to my own "need/want" for gadgets. So, my thinking is how does my spending and maybe overspending on the electronics fit in the quote. And do I want to rethink what I do. Ultimately, thank you Bob for making me think :) !! ***edited to add that I am 67, i.e. full retirement age and I do collect SS but I am still working, by choice as I do love the work and I think it keeps my brain sharp. I am also looking at "sliding" into retirement and how I will do that budget wise and lifestyle wise.
Thanks for this reminder. We are immersed in consumerism. Let's get back to basics. Fill the holes with quality relationships, caring for the other, fresh air, simplicity.
Hi Bob, We go back a long way. Me as a follower and you as a guy trying to continue a life interrupted. Frankly I'm proud of you and all you have accomplished. I keep tabs on you and the folks at Slab city a some others, because your like family to me. So thanks for the wise words via Mark Twain and how you've committed all of that long ago to your heart. Happy trails to you and yours and to all Nomads everywhere.
Thanks Bob. My gut instincts tell me that people are going to need self-suffiiciency information more than ever. I know you are still involved with your project, and you are slowly handing the reins over so it can continue and you can have a bit of time to take care of you. Thanks. Living a simpler life (less buying) is important. Less downsizing work to do when the time comes (sticks and bricks home or a home on wheels). Have a good day.
I see what you're saying, but sometimes it is actually more economical to go with the $100 item over the $15 one. For example, I bought cheap sandals for years, and they broke/wore out so quickly that I needed a new pair every year or two. Finally, I splurged on a quality $100 pair that I researched, and they have lasted 10+ years. We need to be careful not to pass judgements on people, as we don't really know the intent of their hearts. Sometimes people are actually going for quality for economical reasons, not because something has gone wrong in their heart and soul. This is a recipe for a "holier than thou" attitude, which is just as pernicious as flaunting wealth.
Check out the thrift stores. They often have high quality items for a really good price. I bought a great pair of hiking boots for $11 and I think they are going to last forever.
You make a good point, I think. When I decided to go on the road, I wanted good quality gear that would last and that performed well. I already had an expensive down sleeping bag... from 40 years ago. I paid a premium for it, but I'm still using it. If I'd bought cheap, it would not be with me today. "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten." - Ben Franklin * I do try to save on items when & where I can - got 2 great t-shirts at Goodwill for $4 ea. I generally wear Ts until they're VERY holey (not the spiritual kind 😆).
jenny if you continue to connect with bob, you will see well he likes quality, that is not what hes saying, yes its much better to buy quality shoes for example, makes a lot more sense, cheers blessings and peace, bob is not judging, far from it in my opinion, ....
Thanks Bob for one more inspiring video! I like that you have videos about technical topics and also about psychology topics! Best from your German Follower Bernd who is living in Brazil
Your so right. The simpler lifestyle is good for me. That's why I have always wanted a Tiny Home with enough room for a garden and place to take care of the homeless animals as well. And to have a good motorhome to travel to see the beautiful sites .
I have always bought what makes me feel good,I dont care what people think about how I look.i try to look nice when necessary but mostly it's what I like, what soothes my soul
Thank You Bob for bringing me back to square one. Wanting and needing is something I go through once in a while. A trip to Salvation Army or Goodwill shows me there was a lot of want out there and once the feeling is over this is where the goods end up. Keep quoting and I will keep paying discount for others Dreams.......
With the introducing of television into everyones homes came commercials convincing people they have to have the latest products. Keeping up with the Joneses and impressing others became the norm. I am a full-time RVer in a small camper van and am happy with what I have. I buy only practical things that will save me time or money. I also I stay within my budget, don't owe on credt cards, and always try to have money set aside for emergencies. Sadly, many people are in debt nowadays, live from paycheck to paycheck, and have no savings accounts!
I’m learning sooo much from you and the folks who visit with ya❣️ I’ve just begun to figure out what type of vehicle that will fit my needs for the nomadic life.
Sure needed this right now as i downsize what i actually need in my van to make it through a michigan winter untill i get out west to camp host in the spring!❤
Well said. Thank you for sharing this important life changing quote. This can help us save thousands of our hard earned dollars and stress over our lifetimes.
You are 100% spot on. But i feel it is also spiritual in one's faith as well. At least to me. Thank you for good food for thought. I thank Yahweh almighty for giving that message to you to share!
I love this quote in this video.. It makes it about how it works inside of you. You can find minimalist lists of needs. My favorite is "a place to sleep, clothing to wear, and food to eat." I would add to that the ubiquitous "place to go." That's it. That is all you need. What I like is that everything else is for "spiritual covetousness." You need transportation to find a place to sleep. I watched a woman go from RV park to RV park on foot and move every three weeks with a TTN membership. She would hike to the stores. She carried everything on her back. That was living proof of showing just what you need. Human nature is a trap if you let it trap you. I think it was Bob who said getting stuff for people that you don't even know. It's so funny what people can load up on their own backs. Some carry that load their entire lives.
Samuel Clemens (pen named Mark Twain) was a great comedian of his time .. That did have some good jokes and sayings .. Wrote some great Adventure books too .. Which shows his child like imagination .. This quote isn't childish and can be applied to all religions and non religious .. For even science confirms the soul, the human spirit .. For we know that our soul is the energy force for our bodies .. For love, desires and needs .. And when it's obtained .. Our love, desires and needs are content and happy for a time .. Until the next one arises .. As a Christian, I love everyone .. Some up close and some from afar .. As with most, we choose to keep our distance from danger .. But my desire for everyone pertains to the afterlife .. Which depends on our choices in this life .. But there's a deeper meaning to Covetousness that Mr Clemens didn't grasp or didn't know .. And that's passion !! A soul has needs and wants that is normal .. But covetousness is a passionate desire or want on fire .. And cannot be quenched unless it's fulfilled or extinguished .. Which we all have a weapon to combat it, the power of self control 😊😊😊 Thanks Bob for wonderful video .. I know people got something out if this .. Life on earth isn't about material things .. But about experiencing things !! God bless and happy trails !!
Thanks, Bob for the great commentary. Funny how everyone attributes these says like this to men. But Mark Twain, like others, learned these things from the Bible, God's holy scriptures. Thanks again for sharing.
Good Quote and good message as usual Bob, with one exception. Some times spending more money on an item where there is a physical need, is better than buying a cheeper comparable item. Sure I can buy a $15 hat off of Amazon, that will last a few years, but instead, I purchased a $99.99 Tilley hat (on sale for $59.99) that is better built and has a lifetime warranty. I HATE spending money, so when a need arises to make a purchases, I buy the highest quality item I can find and afford. This is also better for our Earth because buying higher quality items, means less lower quality items in the landfill. My point is sometimes the most frugal thing is to spend more on a quality made item, with a bullet proof warranty, that will last for a long long long time time.
I have learned not to care so much what others think based on material things. Needs are often real that we should address. Often it's great to unplug and spend time in the nature. There is an old Greek saying that says know yourself. It's baffling how little we know ourselves today, yet we know so many other things. Just curious, what book is that? Thanks for sharing. Mark Twain is always a great share.
This is so good Thanks Bob! My parents taught us the difference of needs vs wants at an early age when went deep in Mexico and saw people happy and content with very little.
I have always been this way Bob...I am almost medieval in my mindset...I just seem to need so much less than many people. However, I do have something a little bit extra in terms of philosophy....I buy whatever object I need which makes my heart sing in terms of its beauty or the joy it will bring me. I determine the value of the item in those terms and not according to its price or social status. If I had the money...maybe I would buy a Ferrari for its craftsmanship and the pleasure of driving such a beast...that would make my heart sing big time. Also buying a mattress that I can wake up on and savour the delights of a new day....no matter its cost or other people's opinions...it is worth it to me. '' Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.'' William Morris.......Let us determine the value of things ourselves. Thanks for your great videos!
Absolute truth. I shop thrift stores when I need something and I'm content with that. I don't chase the brand or the shiny object. I also like to keep my "inventory" low. I went from a 3 bedroom place to a car. I have another place now and when I start to accumulate, I catch myself. Is it a need or a want? Inventory requires money and real estate. Simpler is better. Thanks, Bob.
I've watched your videos for years, but always with a technical goal in mind. I didn't realize you were a philosopher. I'm looking forward to hearing more. Kent
,Great video. Wow, Mark Twain got it right so long ago. You inspire me and love your heart man. Thanks for sharing your views on life. We are all here on this earth for such a short time, we can do with less.
Well put Bob, I believe that one needs to love themselves and material things doesn’t matter. Happiness is the key to life.
The worst part is when you get what you want and it still doesn't satisfy you.
This man has inspired me to look at the world in a whole different way,so grateful for all your hard work you had done just to show us ppl we could have a simplicity, freedom.
I feel the same way.
Bob also seems to bring others of like minds together.. I went to a caravan last year and felt like part of a community fast.. we were all so different yet togetherness is what we shared.. it was an amazing experience.. if you have the slightest reservations let them go and attend!

Anything from Mark Twaine; seemingly; is always a good read or ponder. We need to stop coveting "things" as though we cannot survive without them.
"Be healthier, stronger, happier." You've unlocked the code. Thank you.
Great quote and makes one really think. I used to say when I saw someone with a bmw "man they are rich" then someone told me once they are not rich, they are in debt lol! Totally opened my eyes and so did this quote. Thanks Bob for ALL you do!

I agree with you, I to try to be a minimalist. Not always easy but it is fun way of being and living! Best luck to you my friend!
Bob, I'm getting ready to hit the road and meet everyone along the way! Love and blessings to you.
I’m in the process of packing all my things to move and have been thinking do I really need all this stuff….then I saw this video. It’s tough tho because it’s a lot of sentimental things that were handed down from loved ones who passed or things I picked up and have memories attached :(

Research shows that our memories of the ones we love will remain long after the material goods we associate with them are gone.

How we’re taught to frame “success” is suspect at best. Thank you for this topic.🌿
Love your screen name! Made me smile!
I'm so glad the "quotes" are still around! Love them...

I always enjoy these videos with "Quotes to live your life by." They're such good reminders of important things to think about
You always make us (ask us) to look within and check ourselves, you're very wise to do so, I thank you for it brother.

I felt this on a cellular level
As I've aged I use the alternative way of purchasing. Just as happy.
Your right, it's about being content with yourself.

Great video Bob. All true. Pride makes life more difficult. Turning us into the wage slave.
I totally agree!! ☮❤️🎶🚐
I will definitely apply it to my daily life, it will also help to budget correctly
I love quotes. Keep a notebook of the ones I love
With the introducing of television into everyones homes came commercials convincing people they have to have the latest products. Keeping up with the Joneses and impressing others became the norm. Sadly, many people are in debt nowadays, live from paycheck to paycheck, and have no savings accounts!
Outstanding! Thanks, Bob!
Desire is suffering. Notice the discomfort that comes from wanting. Contentment is treasure beyond measure.

Bob - You hit the nail on the head ! ! ! !
This is why I follow your channel 🤠🚐👍
Thank you! Very meaningful. This came at the right time because I just started downsizing so I can become a nomad.
Words that I wish all would try living by. Thank you for sharing 😃
I'm really digging the zen of it all. Simple and free is my formula, too.
Muchas gracias' to you Bob. You help the focus.
Thank You for Your Help Bob🙏👍
I just want to feel free. Not held down by stuff. I am planning. :)
Thanks for sharing your wisdom 💛
Great video Bob; excellent ideas to hold close and contemplate daily. Thank you.
Bob, you're such a gem. Thanks for investing the time to share your ideas and philosophies with the world. Truly life-changing. ♥️
So true! Thank you for the reminder. ✌️
Thank you for spreading such wonderful pearls of wisdom that we all desperately need!
It has always been so. Every generation has to learn it for themselves
I’m learning sooo much from you and the folks who visit with ya❣️ I’ve just begun to figure out what type of vehicle that will fit my needs for the nomadic life.
Beautifully said Bob.
Sure needed this right now as i downsize what i actually need in my van to make it through a michigan winter untill i get out west to camp host in the spring!❤
I just bought a $50 hat, it’s warm and comfortable, no regrets :)

Big, big hugs and miles of smiles to you and yours, Bob. Haida haw’aa. Stay safe, and happy trails 🙏🏼🐾🎶 everyone. 🇨🇦

Another amazing quote for the day, very wise words indeed! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for sharing and discussing this quote, Bob 💞

Very good Bob Wells. Thank youuuu. Mark Twain learned that from YAHOSHUAH HA'MASHIACH. I really appreciate you. Thanks. 🙏
I've watched your videos for years, but always with a technical goal in mind. I didn't realize you were a philosopher. I'm looking forward to hearing more.
