    The Omega collab was a huge success because the brand is well known. I liked it because it meant I could get a fun fashion alternative to my expensive watch.
    With this is mind, I think a Seamaster collab would have been huge, and probably even bigger than Blancpain

      It definitely would've been more popular. Similar to how the moon edition is the special one out of all the moonswatches, they could've had the James Bond one as the special seamaster - would've sold in droves.

      @ashwinalagiri-rajan1180 I think that would have defiled the Omega brand way too much if it looked like that. I think the obviously crappy plastic look of the Moonswatch is a part of why it didn't damage Omega

    Converted sales of the blancpain swatch to the real fifty fathoms will be difficult. Few people can wear a 45mm watch, let alone pay 10k. If the Blancpain had changed the case dimensions of the fifty fathoms to the swatch version or smaller of 40mm-43mm and with similar styling of vintage fifty fathoms, this would have been a home run.

    I look at smartwatches as disposable and held that as one of the main reasons I won’t ever own one. I know nuance is a thing that exists but I just can’t bring myself to get excited about these projects. I quite like the marketing exercise that they are. I’ve talked about watches with people I’ve never uttered a word to about watches previous directly because of the MoonSwatch.

    • @darkoflight4938
      @darkoflight4938 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed! Like you say, it is a marketing exercise that works. People, other vise unable to get the expensive original, can get sort of close by owning this kind of junk but hey... How long does the happiness or possible pride of ownership last when the plastic deteriorates the second the watch is unboxed? Not to mention the whole disposable thing. It doesn´t rhyme well in these times of us supposedly being environmentally conscious. Well... It is what it is...

    I have some nice mechanical watches and also have a Moonswatch. Personally, I find the anger here to be quite funny. I think it’s vain to spend thousands on a mechanical watch that is really little more than jewelry in a day when we all have phones that are far more accurate. If someone wants to pay $400 for a plastic watch they brings them joy, so be it. I get great satisfaction from the quality of my daily Seiko automatic for which I paid less than the cost of my swatch, but have never once had anyone comment on my Seiko but get regular questions about the Swatch.

      @steveeschweiler8603 It's a mechanical movement. There is nothing special about it. So you can assume that it will be good for around 5 years. The around translates in to something between 0 and 10. How long it will last depends too on how you use it. I'm for one riding 15k kilo meters on a bike. I seriously thought once upon a time that the reverse would happen and somehow Omega would take the swatch speedmaster and create a marvelous precious metal version in the metal. Too bad, as that would have been a dimensional shift of reality and why not. If we can go from metal to bioceramic we should be able to go from bioceramic to precious metal. Love the content here and it really is amusing to see some amount of weariness to what's next from Swatch and its captive maisons...Can't wait for the new Bioceramic Breuget Type XX, Oh the humanity. And the point is that Blancpain x Swatch has a less strong crystal and a movement which WILL stop working very soon and is overall far less reliable and fragile. Compare it to loads of other watches in the 50-500€ price range: so many other watches have stronger replaceable movements, far better quality crystals (even sapphire) which are also replaceable. Other far cheaper watches can be kept running for decades and decades. This Swatch WILL stop running, I'm told in approx. max 10 years, and many have had their Sistem51s stop running in a few years.

    Tom, you mentioned a souvenir watch, but the thought that came to my mind was, a souvenir of what?
    A souvenir or the last time I bought a cynical, and disposable, marketing (collect 'em all whilst you can) toy from Swatch group?

    What is the expected life span of this automatic mechanism? If it’s 3-5 years it will be worth getting. Less than 100$ a year to wear/ own. Seems ok. It’s disposable fashion. Like most clothes lines adopt.

    I was at the Brussels Grand Place on the release of the Moonswatch, and the line was across the entire square and down the street. Though I believe they only released approx. 500 on the first day. My heart was a bit broken, but I'm kind of glad it was (in hindsight).
    Yesterday we went into Brussels for some shopping food and drink and saw the new Blancpains on display at Swatch. Went in, and the gentleman showed me the collection along with the black "Ocean of Storms"...maybe the boring replica but the one that had my eye from the start. We went and had a beer at a little hidden place we routinely visit, and my wife said I should buy it. So we went back and I did. They only had 50 pieces originally and only 14 left, but surprisingly no line, but it was the watches everyone was looking at.
    The couple bits of info I think that are left out is that the lum is "Grade A Super-LumiNova" and it has a sapphire glass on the rear. I gave it a good light shot around 11pm and at 6am this a.m. it was still faintly glowing, but enough so to make it legible.
    I am not a fan of quartz watches unless they're solar mostly because I don't like to change the batteries, and the 90hr power reserve is the longest yet. Not on par with the real FF's 120hr (I believe its that much), but I'll take it!
    My personal feelings about the one I bought is that I believe it's fantastic, but I'm going to be bias as why otherwise would I have spent €400 on it.

    The concept is fine by me but this one is just too expensive as a functional souvenir of the real thing. You can find a pretty good watch, such as the Hamilton Khaki field watch, which you mentioned, for similar money.

    I would like to see the Hamilton x Swatch, but with the Ventura instead of the Khaki. Also, if you can get the family on board (which may be the biggest issue), you would promote the differing designs as tributes to Elvis Presley, the Ventura's most famous owner.

    A Swatch x Casio F-91W would be an internet breaker as it would be more expensive than the F-91W and sales for the original would go through the roof as could availability and price even more than they already do. The Swatch version would sell out of course but they would have to choose a different colour to those already in the vast F-91W palette of which there are many. Another would be a G-Shock square. I love them. My beloved old friend 5610 nestles comfortably on my wrist as usual following medical stuff as I type. My F-91W is sleeping but will be back on the wrist in a couple of days. Don't you just love watches? My mechanical watches will still get there turn in a day or so.

    To close the marketing loop, what they should’ve done is offered a discount equivalent to the price of the plastic version (either Speedmaster or Fifty Fathoms) toward the original in the metal. This would incentivize buyers of the X Swatch versions to get into the more expensive models.
    Additionally, and perhaps more for those who were already contemplating the steel versions, they could offer the plastic version as a gift with purchase.
    Awareness campaigns are far better when they they sew the seeds of brand loyalty.

    I could see them doing a Swatch X Breguet Type XX model in the future, but I can't see them doing much with the likes of Longines, Rado or Hamilton since they're already "budget" watches (or at least, the retail prices aren't multiple times the Swatch price). Could see a Glashutte Senator Sixties/Seventies model perhaps, but my guess is the Collab needs to be with iconic watches, so maybe they'd go back to Omega and do a Seamaster 300 or ProPlof model.

    • @almac9203
      @almac9203 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it has to be an iconic watch that is also expensive. That leaves Seamaster and Breguet. Glashutte could do with promotion but it simply isn't well known enough. To get full value from this collaboration they need to introduce a smaller fifty fathoms because 45mm is simply too big for most people. I would choose 40mm over 42mm because 40mm could be unisex whereas 42mm is pretty much men's only.

    I don't hate the BlancpainSwatch. But what's the point of getting a famous dive watch that aren't even swimmable. Also, even expensive watches like the new Panarai or Baum&Mercier dive watches have decreased their dive ratings. Creating a 'dive style' watch trend, which is pointless. In the long run, this will hurt the machanical watch market. Because what pleased enthusiasts was the 'quality' of watches. Not some hype.
