    I really like this guy. His voice is really easy to listen to. Also this CC is great, in high school we don't learn much about the pre-constitutional arguments and debates.

      Yep, the Continental Congress is generally skipped as the failed beta version of America 1.0, and it's unfortunate, since it's an educational failure.

      Yes, it's especially good when your hs Gov't teacher was really easily distracted to the point where the Constitution & all of its amendments were not discussed until the day before the final...in a take-home study guide packet. Before that day we had only discussed the Article of Confederation, the Preamble, propaganda, and current events.
      I'm bitter about this.

      +Deanna Kenner Because John green didn't do all these wierd voices that make stuff that is already pretty abstract even harder to follow. That said craig seems to be doing it less than in earlier episodes so maybee he realsied it too.

      +Danny Koehler Maybe they all have assigned subjects to teach and this guy is better at explaining U.S. government than the others.

    • @revarants
      @revarants 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Deanna Kenner well you all seem to be forgetting that they have the same producer, who gives them the okay to do this stuff. so it's not entirely craig's fault? he just does what he's told to keep the lesson interesting. if anything, go back and watch it again if you can't understand. plus, it'll help you get the ideas into your brain. they just want you to have a way to remember all of these facts by remembering these moments and what he says to accompany them.

    I think it'd be really interesting for CrashCourse to cover a more introductory level to political science as a whole, in addition to simply learning about American Politics. There's a lot to be learned about the history of modern day political science. Starting from the formation of each major political ideology in the relevant historical context would be worthwhile and very interesting. Especially when exploring the mindset of each philosopher, and what validated their views to their following. And furthermore how each conflicted with one another, and changed as a result over time. I really like learning about politics in this scope, and was hoping that they'd cover some of this content in this series.

    What people miss is that counting slaves at all was a bad thing for the actual slaves. Keeping the South more heavily represented early in the process allowed the South to maintain significant power early on (contributing to the perpetuation of slavery).

      +Michael Kahn Thank you. i was hoping i was going to find a comment like this.

    • @michaelkahn6942
      @michaelkahn6942 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      +Jacob Sala Thanks. It's heartening to read through the comments and see that many people have made the same point. I'm a history teacher and have seen many textbooks that completely distort the context of the compromise. Getting the South to agree to the end of the slave trade was a huge humanitarian win for the anti-slavery faction. Obviously slavery itself was evil and brutal, but the horrors of the Middle Passage was on a whole other level. To limit Southern influence in Congress AND end the most brutal aspect of slavery, while only conceding a fugitive slave provision that would prove to be difficult to enforce was clearly a net win for the North. Of course, unforeseen factors like the cotton gin prolonged the institution, but the importation did end on schedule in 1809. Had the Northern states taken an absolutist stance in 1787 there would have been far more suffering. Hell, had Lincoln taken a hardline abolition stance in 1860 who knows how long slavery might have persisted.

    • @jacobsala9512
      @jacobsala9512 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      right. its easy for us to sit here and say what we would of done. as far as i can see we did alright. we wouldn't have the constitution if the founders didn't compromise with the south on slavery

    • @rishaiyer1410
      @rishaiyer1410 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The slaves didn't say they wanted to be counted, the white people in large states said the slaves could be counted so they could increase their population count, and thus their representation in Congress. Their intention was never to count the slaves so the slaves could benefit, it was only a means of boosting their population to further their interests and make sure their state is better represented in Congress.

    • @briellealysse9659
      @briellealysse9659 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Exactly. If they weren't treated like human beings, then why should the south get more representation for them and want to count them as people if they don't even treat them as people.

    I like the clone zone as a place where multiple things can be explained/debated at once. I do not like the voices Craig puts on.

    • @neverknowsbest4994
      @neverknowsbest4994 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      i dont, since he seems to argue one side of it regardless of how many arguments. he obviously makes the anti-federalists seem stupid, portraying them as children or spoiled brats with that voice and attitude.
      i also dont like craig

    • @NoahTopper
      @NoahTopper 10 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      neverknows best I think your opinion on the arguments he sets up is heavily influenced by your dislike for him. He made both sides seems stupid, which was kind of the point. I tended to lean towards what the anti-federalist was saying, which I actually think was the goal of the argument, because immediately afterward, Craig says the federalist government went through, but that maybe that wasn't a great thing.

    I keep enjoying this series. Thank you for producing it with so much care!
    But I keep having problems understanding the host. Especially, when he does the voices. Humor is down to taste. But clearly understanding the host is not so much. I am not a native English speaker and probably not your target audience. I deeply enjoy crash course and can understand all the other hosts very well. Also - you have subtitles, to that helps. Still, it would be nice, if the host speaks clearly - doing voices or not. Sorry, if this sounds harsh.
    As I said - the humor is a question of taste and even though I do not find most of the jokes funny, I still like the host and the information very useful. Thank you!

      @Ren99510 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It might be that humor is roughly translated when spoken in a language that is not your first. Or, it could be because Craig isn't all that funny in this series- which is my opinion lol.

      No, it's part of the specification. I chose government and politics in general to study at A-Level (which is two years post-high school - we finish high school when 16 in the UK). The second year, we learn about US Government and Politics whereas the first, we learn about UK. This usually varies upon the school you go to as there are a range of options. I hope I answered your question! :)

      @caseyc408 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      People's religion, lack there of, or where ever they receive moral guidance from will always play a role in politics just like it does in every aspect of ones life. I think your grievance comes from when someone in politics has a different moral guidance than you. We should not strive for a government that limits it's offices to those who believe in a mandatory theological mandate. Whether it be secular humanism, protestant Christianity, or flying pasta deities. ( GO TEA PARTY ) Had to throw that in at the end to mess everything up. Have a great day.

    • @tpenny4816
      @tpenny4816 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Casey C I think that's why they set up the wall between church and state- in order to keep the state out of the churches rather then dominate them as the European leaders did their state churches- which is what killed the European churches who lost credibility along with their government masters...also, and I think this was the big reason, since the founders were of many denominations none of them liked the idea of getting made to conform to the erroneous doctrines of the other founders.... I understand the reasons for keeping Church and state separate but I am puzzeled as to why so many people now days think that the founders really thought religion had no place in politics or society- they were mostly religious and I doubt very much any of them would have welcomed large non-Christian religious or atheistic populations as we do nowdays.

  • @davidkimlive
    @davidkimlive 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Ah, yes. 3/5th Compromise is largely misunderstood. Remember this is not about how human slaves are, it's more about political representation and balance between North and South!

    • @richielomas9564
      @richielomas9564 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you're right in that 3/5ths is probably an overestimation as to how much of a person most of the founding fathers considered slaves to be.

    • @deantaylor846
      @deantaylor846 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The Three-Fifths Compromise DOESN'T mean blacks were less represented than whites in Congress - blacks weren't represented AT ALL. The 3/5 Comp meant that (mainly rich) slaveholders essentially got more representation in government than (mostly poor) non-slaveholders. It's kinda like saying that a person's cellphone gives them an extra vote in an election - it favors people wealthy enough to own them. It's not so much of a racism thing as it is a class-ism thing (although it was QUITE racist).

    • @poophead9809
      @poophead9809 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It wasnt about how much of a person the founders considered slaves to be, you moron. Slaveholders WANTED slaves to be counted as whole people so their states would have more representation. the 3/5 compromise was proposed by non slaveholders.

    • @poophead9809
      @poophead9809 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. slaveholders wanted slaves to count as whole persons so their states would have more representation. The non racist non slaveholders are the ones who proposed they be counted as 3/5. And it has nothing to do with how much of a person they considered black people to be

    I wanted to play a video game, but my brothers wanted to watch me. so i loaded up basically an app on steam and started playing. but i dont want to waste my life so i pulled up crash course. I let my little dude decide what they wanted to watch. E said Politics. I was very surprised. What little kid likes politics? but nevertheless i clicked and started watching along. We went through the playlist to about here. Thanks Craig. You made me and my little brothers that much smarter.

      There's crash course kids which is aimed towards younger audiences. Most elementary school teachers wouldn't find these useful, and middle school teachers could only use them occasionally (the history/gov ones are a lot more accessible to younger audiences though). I'm a high school junior and sometimes the science videos get way more in depth than my schoolwork does, which makes them kind of useless for studying most of the time.

      phoenixkhost Well the US is actually the 4th largest country in the world in terms of land mass (behind China, Canada and Russia) so definitely not on that metric
      But those aren't really the only metrics to measure success. life expectancy, education, average wage, child mortality, violent crime - all areas where the USA is out performed internationally, often on several if not all of those statistics.
      There's a lot more to being a successful state than being big, rich and armed to the teeth.

      It was England when the colonies were founded. I live in New England. In and around New England, everything is England-y. The states of New York, New Jersey, and New Hampshire. The cities of New York, New London. Also just towns, Barrington, Swansea, Bristol, Somerset, Lincoln, Warwick, Kingston, Cranston, Bristol. Everything is named after places in England.

      Yes, it was England when the colonies were founded. However, when the United States was founded, it was the United Kingdom of Great Britain ("and Ireland" would be added to the name in 1801). Still, England was the dominant partner in the Union, especially so after the 1745-6 Jacobite Rebellion, and as such it's not uncommon to see it simply referred to as England throughout US history.

    I grew up being taught the self-flagellating concept that the 3/5ths compromises was built upon the premise that the value of a slave's life was less, but reconsidering it, it seems almost exclusively that it was a way to make sure slave owners weren't over represented. That being said, the less a slave was counted, the less the segments of society that were pro slavery counted. In that light, I wish it would have been the "2/5" or "1/5" compromise instead.

    The 3/5ths compromise sounds like a bad thing when considered alone, but when you add in the fact that slaves were unable to vote, it makes a bad situation not look as bad. It essentially took some power away from slave owners. If each slave counted as 1 person, then the owners would that have much more voting power behind them compared to non-slave owners.

    • @micheilmcleod9103
      @micheilmcleod9103 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +KrunchyGoodness The South wanted them counted as whole person's so they could keep their numbers in the House of Representatives eternally higher than the North's. By having this lock on the House the South could keep their slavery. The North saw it as "you think their property so why count them as people?" The North wanted to not to count slaves as people so it would be easier for an amendment to pass outlawing slavery.

    Local focus hocus pocus (RBF)
    I find it somewhat telling that so many hero stories, wherein the lone wanderer who drifts into town or the plucky band of neighbors who've finally had enough rise up to defeat the local kingpin or boss who has been riding roughshod over people's liberties and economic opportunities, all occur in the south (or most of those stories do) or in other rural areas - the vary areas that favor local control of government.
