If you don’t know, back in 2011 he blew up a building in a capital and then murdered 77 people on an island whilst being disguised as a police officer. Almost all of the victims were teenagers or younger so him only getting 21 years is really frustrating even for Norway.
So if you murder 77 people and are remorseless about it, you have rights to live in a nice apartment if you say you're depressed living in solitary confinement
I had a friend years ago that was involved in a high profile hospital HVAC hacking case. I'm not gonna go into the details because the official story is false. But he ended up doing nine full years in solitary confinement. Anyone that says criminals deserve that kind of treatment is simply a monster. At a certain point, it's not even a matter of punishing them. You're essentially torturing them making them into a completely different individual by way of psychological torture. The suicide rate in solitary confinement areas of prisons is significantly higher than the rest of the prison in a lot of cases. It's like keeping a lion locked up in a cage only to release them. And then being surprised when they rip out somebody's throat.
Notable to mention; he didn’t just murder them. They were on a small island for a summer camp ish thing. He went out there dressed as a police officer and had a 77 minute ruthless killing spree. He even shot people trying to swim off the island. As there was only one boat that went back n forth, and he came on it, a lot of civilian boats made it before some police. But they responded as quick as they could either way. When he was caught he was flexing in front of the officers. Almost every time he was seen in court, he was doing hate symbols, holding sights supporting the protection of the white race and etc. He is one of the most, if not the most, (Peter Madsen too) hated people in Scandinavia. It’s estimated that about every 5th person in Norway knows someone somehow affected in any extent to this tragedy.

Not trying to come for you, just a genuine question 😅
@@ScouseJazmin I think homeless people shouldn't be treated as well as they are in the Netherlands, so there's an incentive to try to escape poverty rather than living on the government and to save taxpayers money. However, prisoners should be treated worse. My rule of thumb is, if you have to choose between going to prison for killing someone and being tortured by a criminal gang for not killing someone, the prison should be bad enough that you'd choose not to commit the crime. In a country with nice prisons, going to prison for murder would be preferable over facing what a criminal gang would do to you if you don't obey them.
@@me-myself-i787 Thanks for the reply and explaining, I'm always a little wary asking questions on the internet about contraversial stuff like this because you never know if someones gonna blow up! But you explained your thinking well. I personally think that Norway has a pretty good system that works for their country - especially given the climate, as sleeping rough is fatal in Scandinavia - and that the results have shown that giving food and shelter to homeless people actually saves taxpayer money in the long run. But I get what works in one country wouldn't work in another - Norway has a small, relatively rich population and most of the homeless support comes from taxes previously paid by the people applying for them, which would be pretty hard in other places. And prisons are difficult - I think there's no way a mass murderer should get his own luxury apartment like this, but most of the "bad" prisons are notorious for turning low-level criminals who do stuff like sell fake dvds into hardened criminals who go out and do serious harm. When I worked in a bar, I met a fair few ex-cons, and the only things that really turned their paths were universally either religion or starting a family - nothing to do with how good or bad the prison was. At the end of the day, prisons were invented to stop crime before it starts, and to stop criminals from reoffending, and they're currently failing. Again, just curious - there are absolutely gangs out there who would kill/maim people who don't do what they say, or their family. What kind of prison would you say is the kind that would stop someone from doing the crime is asked of them?
I don’t understand how anyone can tell me Norway has the best prison system in the world . A mass murderer lives better than a lot of people and rent free.

So, the maximum sentence courts can give in Norway is 21 years. However, that can be extended if it's believed that a criminal is still a threat. So, he's probably staying in prison for life. He also lost his lawsuit and is probably not gonna continue getting that luxury treatment.
What's truly sickening is that after he serves his sentence, he'll still be young enough to do it again, serve the max again, get out again, and do it a third time.

Took 77 lives and they only gave him 21 years in luxury. Insane how each individual life he took was worth less than a year in the eyes of the court. That judge needs definite reevaluation and maybe even fired.
You need to understand that this was in a different country with a different justice system. The judge and court literally couldn't sentence him to more than 21 years. For that, the law needs to change. Dude is literally confined to a single building for the remainder of his life, the justice system in Norway considers that punishment enough. The luxuries he got though? Restricted internet access and a library (and of course a living space that actually has an acceptable and decent standard), fine, because even prisoners need something to spend time on otherwise life, especially in solidarity confinement, would be extremely dull and not serve a good purpose (prisons in the Nordics have stuff like classes and workshops for the inmates, which is a way for them to earn a bit of money while acquiring knowledge and skills for the life after release). But all the other things? Nah man. Also, note how I said remainder of his life? Yeah, that's because he will be locked up for the rest of his life. 21 years is the max sentence that can be given, but guess what? It can be extended, indefinitely.
@@ZhadTheRad >"otherwise life, especially in solidarity confinement, would be extremely dull and not serve a good purpose" ...and he deserves to have a life worth living that isn't dull after killing seventy seven other innocent lives?

People might think it's luxurious for him to have a library and like sport facility, but he's literally confined to a single building for the rest of his life, for decades to come. The game console? That's excessive, but the other things are available to prisoners in other Scandinavian prisons because of the belief in rehabilitation. Now, he won't be rehabilitated (presumably), but do you think a system that believes in rehabilitation and does not have the death sentence would treat someone so inhumanely as to put them in a cell to waste away? Extreme cases like Breivik are far from common, and because we believe in humane treatment of criminals here in Scandinavia (hence the whole rehabilitation thing and our prisons actually looking not much different from apartments) he won't be treated worse than other prisoners. The system isn't flawed (I mean, look at the recidivism rates in Scandinavia), it's just because Breivik is an extreme case (he's a right-wing extremist) far from basically every other prisoner here convicted for murder and him having taken legal action against the state following his imprisonment and the conditions of his confinement.
I agree he should have had more, but its not the judges fault, he set the max in HIS power, the real issue is the goverment / legal system that made 21 years the max
It's because the Nordic system focuses on rehabilitation over punishment, so you sometimes get situations like this. (Also it's not that he will be free in 21 years. That's just when he will have a hearing if he's fit for society. If not it can be extended indefinitely)
Norway’s penal system tends to try to get rid of the primal, chimpanzee-like urge for vengeance and the suffering of those who have done morally refutable things. It opts for trying to rehabilitate them into people who can function in society. However, this is a bit ridiculous.
People are going to be confused about 21 years for mass murder so I'll explain: TL;DR Norway's sentence focuses on time for rehabilitation instead of severity of crime and 5 years can be added to his sentence until he's deemed rehabilitated (probably never) This happened in Norway. In the 1990s, Norway switched to a prison system that focused more rehabilitation than punishment. They deem the loss of their freedom to be punishment enough and now focus on preventing reoffending. A part of this was making the maximum sentence 21 years (though certain crimes like genocide can be punished by up to 30 years) however, if officials deem someone to not be rehabilitation then 5 years can he added to their sentence indefinitely The prison isn't as luxurious as people make it out to be either. In Norway, prisoners are treated humanly as per the rehabilitation process (though he should definitely not have an x-box in my opinion) prisons do have restrictions since it's still a punishment (loss of freedom) and they don't want anything from the outside interfeering with the rehabilitation process
A focus on rehabilitation is much better than letting hatred fester in normal prisons, but it needs to be done correctly with each case. In this case, it most definitely wasn’t.
Yeah, people in America pretend like Norwegian prisons are like a resort or something but it really isn’t, I live in Norway and it’s honestly not a good country, too socialistic or liberal. Norway focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment and it's helped them have the lowest reoffending rates in the world. The prisons aren't as luxurious as people make them out be.
@@wizzellthis took place in Norway
@@wtconroe879 Nah, solitary for life, dude killed 77 people, get a grip.

And yet they dont even punish him

This is the literal embodiment of “If you’re homeless, why not just rob a bank?”
Because it's much better and easier to just utilise the social programs a rich develped nation is meant to have to improve your living situation?
I've heard in the Netherlands, they have expensive social programs, so homeless people are better off than most prisoners. At the expense of taxpayers.
@@me-myself-i787sorry, I'm not quite sure if you're saying this is a good or bad thing? I'd assume most people would prefer the homeless to be treated better than prisoners, but you use "expensive" and "at the cost of the taxpayers" which are generally negative.
That standard is relative to the living standard in Norway. Around half of what is spent on a regular citizen, is spent on a prisoner.

I love how society fails to hold even the worst of the criminals accountable today!
ehm, that's how it always has been...
@@davedor7759 So is that justification for continued mediocrity? What's your point?
@@damoclesvi7736 that it can't really be stopped no matter what
It's because the Nordic system focuses on rehabilitation over punishment, so you sometimes get situations like this.
However, this is a bit ridiculous.
bro literally violated the human rights of 77 people, dude isnt entitled to his own anymore
People are going to be confused about 21 years for mass murder so I'll explain:
TL;DR Norway's sentence focuses on time for rehabilitation instead of severity of crime and 5 years can be added to his sentence until he's deemed rehabilitated (probably never)
This happened in Norway. In the 1990s, Norway switched to a prison system that focused more rehabilitation than punishment. They deem the loss of their freedom to be punishment enough and now focus on preventing reoffending. A part of this was making the maximum sentence 21 years (though certain crimes like genocide can be punished by up to 30 years) however, if officials deem someone to not be rehabilitation then 5 years can he added to their sentence indefinitely
The prison isn't as luxurious as people make it out to be either.
Bro that's a lot of words to describe a moronic example of injustice.
Yeah, people in America pretend like Norwegian prisons are like a resort or something but it really isn’t, I live in Norway and it’s honestly not a good country, too socialistic or liberal. There’s little to no freedom and you can get arrested for saying offensive things and they only wanna talk about football or fish and they have no respect for food in Norway 😥😥 I wanna go to America

You know the system is messed up when a murder in prison lives better then most of us
He lives just as well as us? we Norwegians live just the same as him, only he doesn't have the additional freedom
Norway focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment and it's helped them have the lowest reoffending rates in the world. The prisons aren't as luxurious as people make them out be. Though Norway is considered to have the world's most luxurious prisons, they're really just treating the prisoners like humans because if you treat them like animals, then they'll act like animals. His punishment was his loss of freedom and the prisons still have restrictions

There is lots of information here that is either wrong, lacking or misrepresented. Officially, he is serving 21 years, but it can be extended indefinitely, so he might be in prison for the rest of his life (which is somewhat likely). Or he could been released after 10 years, which he didn't, cause it has been 12 years now.
I'm mainly addressing only one issue, cause the trial is barely begun now.
Previously when he did a similar thing in court, he just used the time to spout his fucking bullshit. Now it seems he, at least initially, is more "reserved".

Also the US isn't the only country that has a stereotypically bad justice system.
Here's the thing, I understand nice conditions for inmates in the effort to rehabilitate... But this guy is in for life because he is deemed too dangerous to be free, there is clearly no hope of rehabilitation, so why is he getting such nice treatment? I would like to remind everyone that Norway’s reoffending rate is 25 percent after 5 years compared to the US where it’s 70 percent after 5 years
Just a couple notes:
- 77 was the total casualties that day - a couple of them died in Oslo because of a bomb set out by him. But majority of them were the kids/teenagers on a summer camp on an island called Utøya
- Even though he only got 21 years in prison, he will never be let out, both for his safety and others (as there is a lot of people who hate him, etc.. which I do understand..)
- The reason he is being treated so well, is because of Norway's prison system. We want to rehabilitate criminals. We take away their freedom but not their humanity, no matter what awful thing they've done. Which I know a lot of people don't agree with but that's how we do it. And it also means that criminals are less likely to commit a new crime when coming out of prison.
Sometimes people cannot be changed. Someone with no remorse and who is mentally fine is one of those people.
Yeah I dont think this dude is changing anytime soon
How are they less likely to commit crimes if you treat them well?
@@RoIIingStonedits called rehabilitation. obviously it doesnt apply here but rehabilitation means if you go to the source of the problem they’ll be better when you let them out, instead of being a hardened criminal
