The SPHA or Self-Propelled Heavy Artillery, came in many variants from the main one, the turbolaser, to the ion, anti-vehicle, concussion missile, thermobaric and more. Making it one of the longer lasting clone wars vehicles. See this complete breakdown of this Star Wars vehicle, and see how it compares to other Republic, Separatist and Imperial craft.

SPHA: took down core ships and took down a ship in Revenge of the Sith
Also the SPHA: never seen in the Clone Wars
This video shows it was in the 2003 Clone Wars show. The reason it wasn't in the 2008 Clone Wars show it's because people making the shows thought it was too big and decided to make a smaller version which was shown in this video as well. I believe in Revenge of the Sith Legends Anakin had one put at the bottom of the venator but in the EA Battlefront 2 you can see the weapon is just a beam coming from a pole. I'm not sure there's any reference book confirming what is actually there.
@@DanBen07 I was talking about in the 2008 Clone Wars where it wasn't even used
I think you mean attack of the clones that's the only movie we ever see the actual vehicles being used, though there are a shot or two of their beams being fired from venators during the intro battle of revenge of the sith.
@@phoenixx913 it's the same technology
Its WAY too big to make a lego set out of so why even try?
I never actually realized how assymetric the SPHA is. It always seemed the main cannon was aligned in the middle, without any capability of turning independent of the hull.
“Yes sir, we are right on schedule”
*fucking ascends*
Nah I hate that.
I wish we seen more of the spha in clone wars one of my favorite tanks in star wars l love them
The 2002 clone wars had it but yeah
More of a Gustav gun than a tank but being a pedant aside I freaking agree. I love me some big guns and these did not dissapoint.
Damn should have watched the whole video before commenting. I was being an ass for nothing!!!
@Brobro7SF bro I know I did you gotta chill aight?
Nothing says "Screw you, and the ground you're standing on" like massive artillery.
Still love the Empire's smaller more mobile medium version of this from EAW.
SPMA (Self propelled Medium Artillery) same it was literally the same thing but the size of an AT-TE and could curve it's shots
or small rocket artillery like katyusha
Now i just imagine the rebels picking one of these up from a salvage yard and converting an entire corvette to house it along with other weapons. Could be a good star destroyer destroyer with the right escort
That would be epic
Seriously, I'd love to see a makeshift warship that coverts some SPHA-T and SPHA-I into turrets.
@@RedXlV honestly, these recent breakdowns of heavy artillery by Meta is basically fueling a makeshift rebel fleet for me in a potential fanfiction story
The SPHA reminds me a lot of the Schwerer Gustav with all the problems that entails. It's enormous (ridiculously so, requiring the landing of an Acclamator in order to be deployed). It's size not only makes it almost impossible to move around tactically, operational, or strategically, but it also becomes a highly tempting target for any enemy aircraft. In fact, the SPHA can be rather accurately compared to the Schwerer Gustav.
The 80cm railroad cannon was 47.3 meters long, 7.1 meters wide, and 11.6 meters tall, making the SPHA roughly 3 times larger. The Germans built two of them and each of them required two ENTIRE flak battalions to defend them from air attack.
I mean hey, this is a galaxy where most of the big factions like the republic/empire have a retarded obsession with mech walkers despite all their glaring inefficiency and the existence of anti gravity tech that's so ubiquitous that pretty much everyone who isn't a spice addicted hobo at least owns a speeder. The Force itself just derps everyone with mechanical engineering skills into prioritizing the rule of the cool and non stop dick measuring when designing aerospace technology. Can the in universe creators of the SPHA really be faulted for creating something so big, stupid and logistically impractical? 😂
@7ElevenTruther yes. Yes they can be. They built rather effective repulsorcraft and they have highly capable and efficient wheeled and tracked systems.
I honestly find myself of the opinion that if they had been willing to build smaller vehicles, they could have achieved a lot more. Cut the AT-TE in half, make it tracked, and you've got a decent MBT or IFV. Stick an AV-7 cannon on it, you've got self-propelled artillery that can basically handle any fire mission.
I'm a big fan of the Saber tanks but I have to admit that the inability of repulsorcraft to cross under shield systems is a significant enough disadvantage, given the commonality of such systems. Based on the Lurmen arc from Clone Wars, every CIS battalion has two small shield generators and even the Rebel Alliance was able to acquire a theater shield. Given those limitations, however, I would advocate for tracked or wheeled systems over walkers.
EC Henry did a pretty good video on the gait and walking speed of AT-ATs that points out one of the most ignored problems of walkers: they bounce a LOT when moving at high speeds. And since we never see them moving at more than walking speed on screen, it's rather hard to argue they are adequate. With a tracked or wheeled platform, greater speeds can be achieved without sacrificing stability or the ability to cross shields.
@@7ElevenTrutherTrying to pretend like as if SW is somehow alone with the mecha obsession is endlessly hysterical. Like as if almost every piece of popular sci-fi franchise fiction doesn't have them present.
@@nicholaswalsh4462But the SPHA can be moved around strategically, lul. We...have literally seen it can be done so, with ease, in the very fucking movie its introduced in. Nor is comparing it to the German railway weapons particularly accurate when they have completely and totally different mission profiles, by and large.
Haven’t watched the vid yet but I just realized how much sense it makes to build artillery as walkers instead of hover stuff. Repulsion tech makes things easy to move without muck resistance, that’s good when you want something speedy but bad if you want something to stay as still as possible. Just imagine how far repulsor artillery would slide backwards when fired. Compared to walkers who are almost impossible to move if you don’t want them to
I feel like the SPHA was basically the star wars equivalent of the Karl Gerat since it was also a massive tank that could move independently from train tracks but required orders from others to fire its artillery styled cannon.
“Repositioning is not an issue, since it can target by ZIP code” 😂
I love the idea of these things being able to have 2 fire modes for the main cannon, either what we see in EP 2 where they use direct line of site and fire a strong beam at a target for more damage, or launch a shot to arc at and angle and hit somewhere like in the 2003 Clone Wars special on Muunalinst.
it's a shame that the SPHA didn't appear more, there isn't even a Lego set of it. though I do wonder how many Lego bricks it would take to build this thing
Simple answer, Yes.
Like a tru to life build or a scale model?
Anakin had the idea in revenge of the sith to put one of these on the hangar of a venator to shoot down separatists ships.
There may not be a Geneva Convention, but the Yavin Codes were a thing in star wars that no one ever abided by
LOL
So basically there is a SPHA Stalin-Orgel, hailing missiles on the battlefield? That's so cool!
6:05 Hey that's one of my missions in the Galaxy at War mod lol
That’s awesome!
4:07"we're right on schedule"💀💀💀💀💀
then INSTANTLY takes off
Like GONE
You just know he flew there just to tell him that when he could've told him over radio😂😂
I went to Spotify. And even this episode is on there. That's exciting guys. Keep up the great work. And my the force be with you, always
I wish we got to see these in the sequel trilogy. These things would be perfect for taking on the first order veichles.
BTW, there’s a full-sized SPHA-T that’s usable in EAW:Remake ground skirmish. If you play as the Empire, you can get one of these gargantuan Gustav wannabes. It has a range of over half the map (the maps are gigantic) and can one-tap most tanks. It is even tanky enough to survive a single bombing run.
I imagine part of the reason why we never saw these things in The Clone Wars TV is because they didn’t want to bother animating all those legs LOL.
But man I would LOVE to see what happens when an AAT gets hit by the SPHA if it were in some sort of emergency direct-fire situation. I don’t understand why, if this ground vehicle’s turbo laser can penetrate capital ship grade shielding easily, they aren’t mounted on… well, capital ships!?
Clone Trooper Captain: *looks at Master Yoda.* Wait, did you just talk like a normal person?
Master Yoda: You shut the f*ck up.
Clone Trooper Captain: Okay then.
I went looking for this comment
And remember it's never a war crime the 1st time and the force will be with you always.
Love the breakdowns keep up the amazing work
What I call "I shoot down Separatist Lucrehulk Command Balls down for a living" type of self-propelled Artillery.
I've been waiting for this video since i was 4
The SPHA would make an awesome RV once you removed the cannon and replaced the massive power source with something smaller to power the unit. Then take out all the gunners and the most of the security detail and you'd have plenty of room to live in the lap of luxury in your land yacht. Add an outdoor veranda with the option to enclose it for climate control and you're all set for Adventure in comfort and style.
Although I would recommend supplementing the legs with a repuslorlift engine system to turn it into a massive air & land speeder, permitting travel over far more terrain types at greater speeds if so desired.Add an outdoor veranda with the option to enclose it and you're all set for Adventure in comfort and style.
Lol maybe see another clone group like Rex and the at-te home
Those cannon had a last breath atomic artillery!
This things response to the threat of counterbattery fire is to just blow it up from another continent.
Bro every time I see a new video of you i get so excited, your vids have been the only good thing for me lately and I love the details and interesting facts you always dig up
Sorry to hear that but glad these help! Have a bunch coming soon
Now I might have an idea where guerilla games got their idea for the helghast mawlr ( a giant walker with a equally giant anti-ship beam weapon )...
these always remind me of the TYPE 66 MASER BEAM TANK from the Godzilla series
I think Obi wan has never had to wait this long for something he needs to do and he like patience
Man we’re hitting 40K scaling
This is the epitamy of why you dont point lasers in the eye
I'm surprised the Venators didn't get SPHA standard for them for the underbelly, or a redesign that utilizes them on the empty underbelly similar to the Mandator 4 did
(for note, I would like the Venator to have mirrored turbo lases top to bottom which would help with its firepower, but the duel underbelly SPHA lasers doesn't sound bad)
Apparently, it was just something that Anakin thought of right before the fleet arrived for the Battle of Coruscant, that they have these extra turbolasers on legs that could be marched to the hangar and positioned to boost the Venator's firepower.
@@RedXlV it's sad that the Venator didn't at least have mirrored turbo lasers on the bottom to help with its firepower and the exposed underbelly
Thanks once again MNL!
I quite appreciate your comparative analysis' being supported by displays of IRL weapons that boggle the mind (and conscience), such as the thermobaric bombs/missiles.
Always amazes/terrifies me how inventive we've become as a species, on ways and means to kill each other.
4:29
THE GONK COLLECTION 💀💀💀💀💀💀
WE GROW STRONGAAAHH!!!!
If they used the SPHA more often, they would've easily crippled the CIS.
Geneva Suggestions
Ah, these things! I know of these things because of the 2002 CW game, where at several occurrences you have to protect them while they take down core ships. I assume they were phased out of service as the war continued in favor of other artillery platforms.
id love to see a breakdown video of the U-wing its my favorite ship
The SPHA kicked some major ass during the Clone Wars
For a video suggestion, I think you should do a complete life of either dooku or palpatine (canon). Another idea is updating older videos as new lore releases
Yeah doing both
Everyone seem to miss this....
*IT IS NOT 140 M. LONG!* It even states in the behind the scenes tab on the wiki for this vehicle how it's blown extremely out of proportions, and is likely less than 60 m. long even, and twice the length of an AT-TE. This 140 m. misinformasjon keeps on spreading from people who doesn't realize it is EXTREMELY out of proportions. I was actually going into this, expecting you to be one of the few people who got this right, but you did not.
I even used a blueprint, and measured the visual image from episode 2 where we see clone inside the cockpit of this thing. I used the height of a clone as a basis and found that the SPAH-T is likely no longer than 40-ish meters! AKA almost 100 meter less than you so wrongly believe it is. And you don't even need my word for it, look at it during the battle of Geonosis for crying out loud! It's visually maybe twice the size of an AT-TE. If it was 140 m. long and 20 m. tall, it would easily dominate the battlefield in view, towering over everything surrounding it. But this is SO far from the case. Hell even the fact an Acclamator can carry some 36 of these should be an indication enough that it's listed as WAY too big on the wiki.
9:30 *Happy Salamander noises*
They remind me of the Maser Cannons from Godzilla with the beam
If the vehicle is truly that large, then the windows we see would be something like 20 feet tall... how are these not a instant kill from a shell into the command center through the glass?
Sort of reminds me of the old Paris Gun used by Germany in The Great War..... Oh! And as I keep watching... guess what you talk about! LOL
the SPHA was a pizza cutter, the trade ship they shot down was a big donut hole.
Wait a minute did yoda speak at the start completely normally
One of the best moments is in episode 3 when it one shotted that frigate
*Oof, imagine if the Reb's had a few of these on Hoth.* 🤔
IMP star destroyers would have had a really bad day. 😵
Honestly It seems like it is perfect to build a mobile base with it. Just imagine a fortress where those are the corner buildings in order to use as artillery but also incoming enemy air units.
You know, if modified you could use the spha as a mobile fire base
This thing is bigger than godzilla!!
The cannons of that thing reminds me of the Maser tanks from the godzilla movies
Please do a video on Clone Commando's, along with all the other Special forces in the Clone Army.
7:51 Wait, isn't the TX-130 Saber class fighter tank also a ground vehicle that's armed with concussion missiles?
I feel like it would make more sense for the SPHA to have treads like a modern day tank instead of legs, similar to the maser cannons from the Godzilla series, Legs in the star wars universe were used for rough terrain that wouldn't be accessible to treads, however the SPHA is so large that it wouldn't matter, having treads would make it harder to kill and easier to move
Wait those SPHA we see in Attack of the Clones are turbolasers!!?! Seems more like a death star laser to me
😏 . . . We~ll there is a planet in that galaxy far far away called ‘Geneva’, however their conventions are more like comic book nerd conventions & such…
I would’ve loved to see it with treads.
Idk fam. Looks like the EU writers got the size of this tank VERY wrong. As it clearly shows in the AOTC clip that the windows are about as wide as two clone troopers. The ending you p it seems far more accurate to what it would really be.
I think treads would make more sense on something this heavy.
makes me wonder what SPLA would look like
I don't know about you guys, but i personally would lay down my weapons and surrender if i had to deal with the SPHA. That's especially the case if i had to deal with them in space, on board a Venator or any other similar ships. That's just me though.
@5:46 anyone know where this gameplay is from? So want to try it out.
I thought I saw this already?
Like 100 people saw it early because it was in a playlist before it went live idk if that's how. I'm going to do that from now on I think just a nice little sneak peek
@@MetaNerdzLore man I loved it all the detail and such, I watched full through again lol 😆
Wait... THEY'RE HOW BIG?!?
How the FUQ do you fit 36 of these in an
ACCLAMATOR CLASS ASSAULT SHIP???
Just take a little bit from every one and make the super spha
I ask me how the Spha can fire out of the venator in episode 3
Was he backwards hanging there
The SPMA though was a cool vehicle in EAW.
nice video, what is the background musing you use in your videos?
Hey Metanerdz, could you please do video(s) on the vehicle designs by Fractalsponge?
What happen with the other 15 crew members who were part of the 25 crew team ?
Question: Is it specified anywhere why Ion weaponry was not a main armament of ie. starships, instead being relegated to a specialised units? We can see in-canon that relatively small amount of Ion firepower can disable even an ISD. It fries shields like nothing. It renders hardware unusable. Why not make it main weapon?
Ah the well known SPHA...
Sure its cool. But its not GR75 backbone of the rebellion cool.
Like for instance
The GR75 is apparently modular? So could it house a hangar inside?
Or be used as a true company transport similiar to the CR90 in twilight company?
Given guns could it go toe to toe with an arquatins or gozanti?
In rebels it gets destroyed by a tie interceptor was that gr75 not shielded?
8:16 could anyone tell me what game is he playing? i whould die to play that
Why does it have a massive reactor if it needs to be recharged?
Still need fuel for the reactor, like the ships themselves, it is burning through that much to have that output
@@MetaNerdzLore what kind of reactor burns through fuel that fast, is it running on diesel?
0:00 did yoda just speak normally?
Is it just me or is the audio in this and in your previous video about the AT-AP weird compared to other of your videos?
awesome? yes.
Practical? NO not without reducing the ludicrous crew and size.
You forgot the width
I'm doing a star wars rp,I'm gonna use these for war crimes
What’s the game at 2:34 ? It looks kind of familiar but I can’t place it.
Its called Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds.
Its basically Age of Empires just in Star Wars. I hope this answer finds you well even if 9 months to late 👊
I know this is unnecessary but what's that game on the second minute?
Sorry I didn't text you back, I was having a SPHA day.
What game mod is being played at 8:06?
squad star wars mod, not sure exactly what the mod is called but im sure u could look it up. the game is called squad tho
This is just a maser tank
Good use of the Russian TOS-1A.
Thermobaric weapons not war crime. Just treaty between some nations saying I won't use it if you don't use it.
I never liked this vehicle. Its ugly, deformed. Has a turnable turret, but the haul made so its in the way. Its already conveniently on Geonosis and its not much of a use in any other parts of the battle that is just happened to be launched anyway... I like to forget about it
yoo nice video but i would like to know what game it is on 8:21
