- Kate Sanders (Diana Silvers) is an ambitious and gifted, if tomboyish, aspiring ballerina from Virginia who, because of her low-income status, is given a scholarship to attend a prestigious ballet school in Paris, France. Upon arriving at the cutthroat, internationally-renowned institution, her confidence and emotional fortitude are tested by a beautiful, mysterious fellow dancer, Marine Durand (Kristine Froseth), who recently lost her brother (and dance partner) to suicide. While confrontational at first, Kate and Marine’s relationship evolves into an emotionally-charged, competitive union beset by lies, sexual awakening and, ultimately, emotional breakthrough as they risk everything to win the school’s ultimate prize: a contract to join the Opéra national de Paris.

Honestly, they make it seem like there's only two good dancers in the whole school, even though it's set up to be a literal feeder school for the Paris Opera Ballet. If this was realistic, some third girl who has no time for drama and works really hard would win the contract.
Maybe that would be the ending. Neither one of them gets it.

@@Srabubulupa Yeah for sure, there are iconic dancers who are a cut above the rest. But prima ballerinas are seasoned dancers and only a handful of ballerinas around the world have EVER attained the status of Assoluta and it's a title based on a lifetime of outstanding work. Neither of these categories would ever include teenagers, no matter how talented.

@@dizzyella8204 Oh, wow. Those are like completely different genres alltogether. Even down to the dance, where Black Swan uses classical and puts it in the background, the movie really is not about dance and you can substitue it with baking and still get the same movie.
Meanwhile Suspiria is about contemporary and the dance is front and center, essential part of the movie.

I tend to stát away from those, because in most cases those do kot understand dance at all. It's like watching a very racist, or sexist or otherwise insensitive movie.

I'm confused/annoyed. In the book Kate and Marine have been best friends and studying at the Academie together since they were little. It is one of the key relationships throughout the whole book and I wish they would show that in the movie instead of saying that Marine was new to the school. Kate and Marine's friendship seems to have much less depth in the movie, and ordinarily I wouldn't judge but I do love this book so much and I really hope the movie is an accurate reflection of it.
If there are gay characters, obviously I'll see it.

My first reaction as a ballet dancer: You can just say Paris Opera Ballet school lol
It will be interesting to see how this turns out though, I read this book a couple years ago and found it to be a very accurate if not depressing portrayal of the ballet world, especially on young students. But this movie I'm not so sure, there's a lot of space to screw up here and make it too dramatic to a point of not being able to connect to the characters and wonder "why would anyone want this" but we'll see.
