We had already taught them in a full and unbiased way about the scandal of selling "indulgences" for sin and we agreed with the film's depiction of this. However, this film is essentially the sugar-coated version of Luther, and we also had to point this out. Note the sequence where Luther objects to a man who being buried without prayers after he has committed suicide. Then read what Luther himself wrote about suicide and you will understand what complete fiction this is. Note the way the film depicts Luther restraining people from harrassing a (Catholic) priest, saying this wasn't the sort of violence he wanted - then note that this completely fictitious event is fully at odds with the type of demagogic and inflammatory rhetoric that Luther used against his religious enemies. A final title telling us that Luther established "freedom of religion" is also nonsense - Luther wanted to establish a new, and enforced, religious orthodoxy for Germany, and after the "religious wars", this was what was enforced. If your ruler was Protestant, you had to be Protestant or you would suffer legal penalties. [And if your ruler was Catholic you would have to be Catholic or you would suffer legal penalties.] Luther had absolutely no conception of a secular society where religion was a matter of personal choice - what you might understand as "freedom of religion". Catholics are aware that statues and pictures are simply human-made images, and serve as reminders of what is being worshipped - which is not the paint or plaster of a painting or statue. By the way, check out some time how elaborate the decoration is nowadays in many Protestant Church. It is an essential human urge to express beliefs in artistic form.

running to our Year 12 (16-year-old) students as part of their Religious
Studies programme. We had already taught them in a full and unbiased
way about the scandal of selling "indulgences" for sin and we agreed
with the film's depiction of this. However, this film is essentially the
sugar-coated version of Luther, and we also had to point this out. Note
the sequence where Luther objects to a man who being buried without
prayers after he has committed suicide. Then read what Luther himself
wrote about suicide and you will understand what complete fiction this
is. Note the way the film depicts Luther restraining people from
harrassing a (Catholic) priest, saying this wasn't the sort of violence
he wanted - then note that this completely fictitious event is fully at
odds with the type of demagogic and inflammatory rhetoric that Luther
used against his religious enemies. A final title telling us that Luther
established "freedom of religion" is also nonsense - Luther wanted to
establish a new, and enforced, religious orthodoxy for Germany, and
after the "religious wars", this was what was enforced. If your ruler
was Protestant, you had to be Protestant or you would suffer legal
penalties. [And if your ruler was Catholic you would have to be Catholic
or you would suffer legal penalties.] Luther had absolutely no
conception of a secular society where religion was a matter of personal
choice - what you might understand as "freedom of religion". I could
also note how Luther, in historical reality, sided with the princes
against the peasants when they revolted and again, in inflammatory
rhetoric, encouraged those rulers to slaughter the rebels ruthlessly.
The film does not mention this. Nor, of course, does the film mention
Luther's biggest best-seller (a great favourite of the Third Reich)
"Against the Jews and Their Perfidioous Ways". Luther did not invent
anti-semitism. It had been around at least since the days of pagan
(pre-Christian) Rome, and it had been around in the (Catholic) Middle
Ages, but Luther gave it a new vehemence with his suggestions that Jew
be locked up in special camps, controlled even more severely than the
existing ghettoes. So Guess who thought this was a wonderful - and very
German - book? I do not say this to denigrate the impulses of the whole
Reformation, but to note that those who think they are learning History
from movies are always doomed to be misinformed.

Catholics are aware that statues and pictures are simply human-made images, and serve as reminders of what is being worshipped - which is not the paint or plaster of a painting or statue. By the way, check out some time how elaborate the decoration is nowadays in many Protestant Church. It is an essential human urge to express beliefs in artistic form.
