  • Do you want a classic car? Do you like having room for you stuff? Are you tired of cars with trunks? Then you might be ready for a station wagon. In this episode we discuss the merits of owning a wagon. And we talk about the features of my own 1957 Ford Ranch wagon, which I consider the direct competition to Chevy’s Nomad

My dad bought a 55, 56, 57 two door wagons because some kids in the area had opened the back doors while the car moving. It had a 312 Thunderbird Special with a 4 barrel. I thought our 57 had backup lights in the center of the tail light.
    Brings back memories.

I have a '58 2 Door Ranch Wagon my foster father bought in 1974. I bought it from him in 1980.

Wagons are just rare to see or find. Nice job you did there. Ford was styled very nicely in those years. That was my birth year. Would love to have one on my Ranch. I believe that in 57 Ford had some sort of record for new models or number of models than has ever been beat.

MY DREAM VEHICLE 57 FORD CUSTOMLINE. 57 Ford styling was ahead of its time. All other cars still with the rounded look. As well as the great looks, the styling was practicle, no big bumpers like the 57 chevy with it's small tail lights What I wouldn't do for a 57 2 door wagon or sedan model. 56 Ford close second, end of story. Thank you for sharing the video. FORD ON.

In 1961, my family moved from Minnesota to California in a 1959 Ranch Wagon. Brown and white 6 cilinder, 3 in the tree. Overloaded and pulling a trailer,
The clutch went out in San Pedro's hills.

I LOVE Ranch Wagons -- a 55 Ranch Wagon was my first car, and I wish I still had it. Actually the Ranch Wagon was not a direct competitor to the Chevy Nomad. The Nomad was in a class by itself as an upper tier hardtop luxury sport wagon, but Chevy did have a 2 door wagon that was in the same class as the Ranch Wagon in the 210 series. Also if either company was making a 2 door wagon to be a direct competitor to the other, it would have been Chevy building one to be a direct competitor to the Ranch Wagon, as it was introduced in 54. Kind of like the Ford Ranchero was built as a direct competitor to the Chevy El Camino when in fact the El Camino was created to be a direct competitor with the Ranchero when the Ranchero came out first by 2 years -- Ford in 57 compared to Chevy in 59.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Had a bunch of them back in the day (graduated in 66). Prolly like the 55 best, but ... They all sat to low. Down behind the wheel like a modern low-rider truck driver. I'm long torso guy and they are still too low ... If I was to build one today, I'd certainly block the seat up a couple of inches and get a smaller wheel 😎

I have a rust-free blue '57 Ford Ranch Wagon that has been on the "back burner" for a full restoration for the last several years. It has a 312 V8 engine with 3 speed OD manual transmission. It still runs fairly well but smokes a bit. The plan is to install a '71 Ford 460 engine with AOD A/T. The body has been media blasted and epoxy primed in black. I have a front disc brakes conversion for it and a vintage A/C kit for it as well. Seats have been re-upholstered black leather with burgundy vinyl weave inserts and interior trim has been done to match. 16x7 Magnum 500 wheels and Michelin tires. Bumpers are currently being re-chromed, and trim has been buffed/polished. Mid-May, body will be painted black cherry color with burgundy ghost flames. Car has a '58 Ford hood that I bought at a swap-meet many years ago. Car will have rack-and-pinion P/S, throttle-body fuel injection, MSD ignition Hooker headers with 2 1/2-inch dual exhaust. This car will be my 10th fully restored classic/vintage Ford high-performance vehicles. Most likely will be my last restoration project.

Last two-door wagon? Probably the Vega-derived Chevy Monza, maybe the Pinto, late seventies. My mom had a '64 Opel Kadett 1000Caravan, Kadett wagons and their successors available in the US into the early seventies. I remember a friend's mom had a Studebaker Lark two-door wagon, available through '61, though they traded it for a Lark Wagonaire (cool concept, sliding rear roof section). Another friend had the Falcon two-door wagon, and I remember seeing a two-door Chevelle wagon in the mid-sixties to early seventies. There was a family I knew through the Boy Scouts who had a '60 Plymouth Suburban two-door with the slant six and three-on-the-tree; car was the same size as the New Yorker and Saratoga and Windsor wagons....
Our TV repairman had a blue '55 Ranch Wagon for a utility car, he quit fixing TVs and went to his side gig as a scuba diving instructor and guide full-time (he was the coolest guy my parents' age I ever met).

Also- the Ranch Wagon was the bottom of the line wagon. The Del Rio was Ford's competitor for the Nomad. Also a door wagon.

Station wagons are more practical then having a pickup truck can carry anything in them if rear seat let's down have more room than 8ft truck bed haul what ever you want if take care of them last forever I just wish ford would kept the round tail light of 60s there cool tail lights even S kid they seem catch me eye but with wagon can keep everything dry

New wagons are the perfect vehicle, too. If you can find one. I guess Volvo makes the only full sized true wagon for sale in the US now. VW dropped the USA Passat wagon several years ago (still have mine), Buick dropped its Regal wagon, and the Subaru Outback is more an SUV hybrid due to height and road clearance.

Loved the 57 Ford but in Wisconsin they rusted away much faster than the 57 Chevys. Yes Ford sold more but the Chevys lasted longer..

Yes, they are the perfect vehicle unless you actually do need a truck. It can run you to the grocery store, and then go to the hardware store and won't tell you no if you need to carry plywood. You can pull tow and haul just like a regular truck and seat more than three people at the same time. You can pick up the kids at school and do a burn out leaving. Then you can pick up friends and go chase down two-seater supercars if your engine is powerful enough. This was the mom-mobile before the minivan, but this will most likely always have a V-8.
