There are many technical elements to gymnastics and it’s scoring.
There is definitely a subjectivity to the sport as some judges hve different angles and therefore see different things.
A score can’t be changed just cause of booing, the video probably didn’t include that the coaches submitted an inquiry to change the score (which us allowed)

I remember watching this. Nemov did a remarkable job with release skills but he took a huge step on his landing, which was an automatic .2 deduction that the judges could not overrule. The crowd didn't seem to understand that. Had he not taken that step, he would have EASILY won first, but he was scored fairly due to the step. I believe he understood that and that's why he asked the crowd to stop protesting. It was very classy of him, and at least within the gymnastics world, his placement in this competition is not seen as controversial.

No matter how difficult a gymnast's routine is, the max score would always be 10, this is the problem, with old 10-scoring system. Other gymnasts can have an easier routine with all the requirements fulfilled, and some bonus here and there and they would get a ten, a more difficult element will not be reward, because of the scoring limitation. His actions, along with his performance, will cause him to be forever remembered as The People’s Champion for a very long time. Knowing that another athlete was waiting to perform, he stood, showed love to the crowd who was booing the unjust judges, and pleaded with them to be quiet. Even though he was upset, he considered the other athletes. I watched his performance and he was amazing!! He finished 5th, when he should’ve finished 1st!! What some people commenting on here need to remember is while Nemov performed all those amazing releases, he like everyone else who medaled had a max score of 10.0 which was the scoring system at the time. He didn’t stick his landing and had a large step forward which resulted in a .2 deduction which was apart of the rules at that time. Meaning the max score he could had received was a 9.8 due the deduction. The rest of his scores were 9.75 which makes sense due to judges finding small things here and there. If he would had stuck the landing, he very likely would had won the gold.

That's when I understood what the power of the people was meant to look like.

@@vegetapt9144 it's really hard for athlete's to qualify for the olympics without undergoing a structured training regime. Sure they could have raw talent in their youth but that talent has to be refined and polished by being trained by the best coaches, pt's, choreographers, equipment (if needed). All of this costs money via sponsorships, stipends or government sponsored training. Sure you can get private sponsors for some tournaments but if you're representing a country, the government will be involved in this process.

I don't think he's praised for the country, though. (who exactly are you talking about, the narrator, the crowd?) It does sound weird how the voice says 'a japanese gymnast', 'an american g', 'a russian g'. Could have said the names maybe. Saying one gymnast, a second/another one and a third one would be too confusing I think. 😅 As for the crowd, th Olympics being in Europe and Russia being close, maybe he had more supporters than Americans or Asians, that's just natural. Then the wheel turns at a competition held in the US...
