Tennessee had arguably the 3rd best defense in the SEC last year, and many key players from the first two levels are coming back. Pearce has developed into an absolute monster edge rusher and is a projected top 10 NFL pick, so he should anchor the defense. DB depth is the question mark, but Slaughter and Macdonald are coming back and getting pressure if half the battle with defending the pass.

Joe Milton was a 4-star recruit in the class of 2018. He CLEARLY developed to 5-star level *PHYSICALLY*, but he never developed above 3-star level from the neck up. That’s something that coaches just can’t teach. You either have it, or you don’t. Oh sure, if you inherently have it, coaches can draw that out of you, but it’s not something they give you. It’s something they bring out of you that you already had. You either inherently have it, or you don’t. Joe Milton clearly didn’t have *THAT*.
Nico, however?…. I think he’s got *THAT* PLUS some! There’s exciting times coming on Rocky Top!

The last part about this being Heupel getting his first real HS QB recruit at Tennessee is everything. But even more than that, Nico isn't even going to be the primary feature this year. It's going to be Dylan Sampson. Heupel's offense is a running offense. And Sampson is going to be a superstar. Nico is going to be an *addition* to that.

Nicos is unproven & young with ALOT of pressure & in the SEC. That = let down. Look for twnn to have 3 losses in best case but 4 losses is prob more realistic. Alot of young talented players that laxk experience & a secondary thats charmin soft. If nico doesnt win the heisman, then tenn doesnt make the playoffs...no pressure on a rs fr or soph which ever hes is.

i know it was a bowl game and people have more or less stopped caring about bowl games, but the decision making and the speed of said decision making in the iowa game really sold me on him. joe physically is a beast, but he was his own worst enemy when pressure was on. nico is not afraid to tuck that thing and take it 15-20 yards if the gaps there and he can hit the short stuff which opens up the deep stuff. im excited i think he's gone fit our offense like a glove and we go 11-1 or 10-2 again this season. especially since we have the defense we were missing two years ago, james pierce and that front 7 are gonna be deadly this season.

Hookwr and Milton were extremely different qbs. The biggest difference last year's, though, was the QB run. It was missing. I really think they didn't run Milton a lot because he was playing, not to get injured or at least not injured worse. It really messed with their effectiveness on offense. It will be interesting to see how they run Nico.

I think everyone wants to blame Milton, but the receiving corps didn't help him any. We lost Hyatt and Tillman, McCoy got hurt, Keaton played horribly inconsistent, and the replacements never stepped up to the next level. I'm not saying Milton didn't have his own issues (decision making and reading defenses), I just think he gets a lot of blame for things out of his control.

I agree with the early assessment of Tennessee's season 2 years ago in comparison to last season. Most Tennessee fans like myself were expecting the (bridge) season as you referred it to so it was not extremely disappointing. People who had been around the program for a few years knew that Joe Milton was simply incapable of throwing an accurate deep ball (disastrous for Tennessee offense). Running game will be strong again behind Dylan Sampson and the O-line, although not great with depth, has some very good returning starters. Defense seems very suspect in the backfield, seemingly getting torched every other play in the spring, but the defensive line returns first team All-American sack-master James Peace and the nations leading freshman EDGE rusher 5* recruit Jordan Ross. Omari Thomas is a really big guy stuffing the middle and UT will need this defensive line to become one of the best QUICKLY to help out its second and third levels of defense.

I see Nico as the smartest QB we've had in a bit. He knew not to put the ball up against Iowa because they weren't gtiving him the secondary. The Tempo Spread is a reactionary system to what the defense is giving you. That is why it's hard to beat, especially when you are schemed to go vertical. They just never really went that vertical with Joe in game scheme. So, I would not be shocked if he rocks the preseason n the NFL and with a slower offense, I think he can improve.
