    Can vouch for the Kizer Swayback. Bought one for my wife, and she absolutely loves it. I've even caught her fidgeting with it while browsing the web in our office. It's comfy, small enough for a lady's pocket, and it's been putting a smile on her face for over a year.

    My mom needed a knife basically to open mail. She doesn’t carry a knife everyday. Also, she’s quite small and has limited hand strength. I bought her a Kershaw Kapsule and she really likes it. Definitely not premium steel, but for no more use than she gives it, it’s great!

    The knife I always gift is the Victorinox Huntsman if I know the person is often hiking or in the woods, or the Deluxe Thinker for the urban environment people 😅 and the Classic SD for girls because they don't want to carry anything bigger, at least the ones I know...

    I always felt judged by whoever designed the SAK Cybertool. The knife implies that the owner has a laptop but no can opener. Like a college student or a hobo. What sort of person do you think I am, Victorinox?

    As a ladyperson who does carry in my purse, the issue of knives popping open is real. I have that Swayback and while it is a fun and useful design, I have found it slightly opened in my bag. So I only carry it when I'm using a bag that has a small slim pocket that it fits into by itself. I don't have the Dragonfly but I do have a couple Delicas and I have never found the lock to be dangerous to use.

    I have a Victorinox Cybertool M and LOVE it!!! It's very handy in an office; I've used it to replace armrests on our chairs, for example. Do you have any suggestions for extra bits for the driver?

    • @Regolith86
      @Regolith86 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been trying to find extra bits for mine and so far no joy. 😢
      I've seen some mods that will make it work with regular 4mm bits. Basically you have to stuff a small magnet and maybe a spacer down into it to make them fit and stay put. However it may no longer work with the ones it came with unless you dig out the magnet and spacer.
      They chose a very non-standard way to do it, unfortunately.

    I'm not a IT guy at all but the Cybertool 34 makes a wonderful edc tool. It's a thick tool but it's a lesser footprint in the pocket vs a fullnsize leatherman but with most of its functionality. It is priced high though. I got mine through a dealer on ebay a couple weeks ago for 78 bucks new.

  • @Chris_Mack
    @Chris_Mack ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Thanks DCA and Thomas, great stuff as usual. About the knife for mom, if she has long(ish) fingernails, flippers likely will not work _(broken nails . . . you do not want to be responsible for that.)_ My wife (75 years young/old with arthritis and nails) cannot open any of my OFT knives (including the UTX-70) the springs are simply to strong, she has also expressed that back locks work best _for her_ . Her favorite is a Gerber Gator. The Gater has a thick handle that is 'grippy' and enough of the blade protruding from the handle when closed to pinch it with her thumb and side of her index finger to hope. One handed or assisted openers are out, they _feel_ less controllable to her. YMMV
    Also, can we add 'Finger Safe' to the filters on the Knife Center website??

    • @EDCandLace

      The Kershaw live wire far and away is the easiest to open and close OTF I've ever touched.
      If she likes lock backs, a great preforming knife that would be easy to open for her and easily closed as well as being exceptionally high preformance is the spyderco k390 Stretch 2. Bigger more hand filling handle, full size blade with amazing cutting preformance.

    • @Chris_Mack
      @Chris_Mack ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EDCandLace The Live Wire is on my list to buy. The handles on the Spyderco knives are just to thin for her hand and arthritis. Gerber's Gator has a very thick and round handle that is very comfortable, even I think it is comfortable. Thanks for the input! 👍

    The hook knife… being a lefty, I looked high and low on the Internet for months and the left handed ones were out of stock. I bought the double edged one. I wish I’d waited, the urge to use one’s thumb on the backside of the knife is extremely powerful when you are working on a spoon from harder wood, but alas, there is no backside on a double edged knife.

    Hey DCA and Thomas, serious question.
    I have a Spyderco infestation.
    I know you can help me with how many Spydercos end up on your table.
    It's sort of a Delica subject and I don't know if my wife can Endura any more but it started with just one and I didn't get Bugout to handle it when it was just one. Before I knew it there was about 110 or 112. So I asked my Compadre what to do. And I couldn't Evoke a good suggestion from him. I have been trying flytanium to get rid of them but they seem to be multiplying. Maybe you have a Cogent answer for my Spyderco infestation is there. Is there an Elementum I haven't looked at? Or should I have more Resilience and Persistence in my original solution?
    Thanks
    And I am thankful for my wife for keeping up with my knife wants!

    Hi David,
    Why are Dive knives blunt nose blades?

  • @yourneighborkevin
    @yourneighborkevin ปีที่แล้ว

    Very serious question! Bringing a knife to a Christmas gathering.
    Every year of my childhood this happened. My extended family got together a my grandmother's house on Christmas Eve to open gifts. Inevitably one of the gifts would be wrapped with too much diligence (and tape) or one of the packages would be too tough or sealed in some way. As per tradition, someone would ask the room, "Anybody got a knife?" My uncles would look at each other and, after a display of false humility for form's sake, they would all pull out whatever they were currently carrying. After a five minute conversation about the merits of each knife, one would be selected for the job, leaving several uncles pretending not to be insulted and one uncle with the satisfaction of being the chosen one. Good times!
    BUT! Times have changed! And now I'm the uncle! But my grandmother has passed away and the location is a different house. There are lots of new family that doesn't know each other so well. And, you know, emotions run high at the holidays.
    So, my question: What knife do I carry on Christmas Eve? There can be no mystery to opening or closing. It can't scare anyone. It has to lock. But it has to have a level of functional coolness that increases the confidence of the person I hand it to --- because this is, after all, another moment of low-key evangelism for the amazing, fun, and heritage rich world of pocket knives.
    MOST IMPORTANTLY --- It has to be the one that gets picked. I must be chosen. There can be only one.
    Great work you guys! Love everything you do! And Happy Thanksgiving.

    Hey, fellas, love the channel! I'm looking for a good fixed blade for work. Lately, I have been liking the idea of a folding utility knife as my edc and keeping a bigger fixed blade in my tool bag. Ideally, it would be full tang, 4-6 inches, and a tough but easy to maintain steel. My upper limit on a work knife would have to be $150 because it would see heavy use. Drop points and clip points seem to be the most practical for my needs but i am open to suggestions. Thanks!

    Question DCA: I was taught early on that folders when flicked open should be deployed softly, so as not to damage the knife's, uhh, innards, to use the technical jargon. I have a buddy who delights in opening his knives as hard and loud as possible, with a CRACK that sounds to me like a bullwhip. He insists their innards are more than up to it, and that I shouldn't coddle my knives so much. Which of us is right? Please say it's me, as I'd rather he owe me the drink than the other way around. Really we're looking for a general answer, but if it's knife specific, his main EDC is most often a Bugout, and lately mine has been a Deka. Thanks.

    Is there any side open auto deployment and side auto closing meaning instead of hand close as Made in USA and magna cut available. Similar to auto open close as otf knife

      You are asking for a double action automatic. I remember seeing one about a decade ago but it was fraught with problems and I haven’t seen anything since. If you can forgo the double action Pro-Tech can meet your requests.

    I find the ka-bar actually not a very good option as a stirring blade since its inconvinient to carry. A stir knife should be one that's on you before you had your morning coffee (and go wherever you might have a drink you may need to stir), alongside being easy to clean, and with high lunchroom acceptability factor. That's not the easiest set of specifications to achieve, as the lunchroom acceptability removes the potential for a fixed blade, and you still need a blade as long as the height of your cup. you might consider a slipjoint, which answers many issues, but the nail nick will get gunked with whatever you're drinking.

    I'm a huge Star Wars fan, are there any knives that you can think of that have a Sci-fi vibe but are actually good usable blades?

      Boker has some unofficial "Star Wars" Kalashnikov AK74s. They come in green, blue, and red blades that are matches to the main lightsaber colors, and an "Imperial" white and black that looks like a knife a Stormtrooper would carry. They also have the "Fett" color scheme that matches Boba's armor.
      I love them.

    The lefty answer isn't unneeded holes, it's separate models.

    I hate to tell you but that soft MT m390 will be no harder to reprofile then that n690 will be. I sharpen them every single week a couple of them for customers and MTs m390 so I'm not just speaking without experience. Just like the stitch and msi they are incredibly soft and it totally kills the wear resistance. I would be willing to say that your average aus10 out there will take more time to reprofile then MTs m390. The only good thing about their m390 is it does respond very well to a diamond loaded strop.

    • @bloodgain
      @bloodgain ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a dish brush, personally. No fingers near the blade! If you want to be extra safe, you can lay the knife flat against the sink and clean one side at a time that way. I also like the Joseph & Joseph BladeBrush, but it's limited to knives about 3" high, so won't work for really big knives like cleavers.

    Hey David, looking for a good knife to keep in my car for survival purposes. Good glass breaker and a razor sharp blade to cut through seatbelts with ease.

    • @jb7707
      @jb7707 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For my money, I'd get a cold steel srk and a separate glass breaker and seat belt tool like the orange hammer or rescue me tool.

    • @scottmackey4182
      @scottmackey4182 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much any Microtech OTF. Select one with a partial serrated blade edge to help “sawing” through a seatbelt. But all mostly come with glass breakers at the butt end. They store well, are extremely sharp, have excellent steel typically and are easy to use in an emergency.

    • @bloodgain
      @bloodgain ปีที่แล้ว

      IMHO, this is where a purpose-made emergency tool like the RESQME can't be matched by any knife. They're cheap at under $10, there are multiple ready-made options for keeping it within reach of the driver or passengers (available in an all-in-one kit for a couple extra bucks), and there's no temptation to ever remove it from the car. Then your "car survival knife" can just be any good survival knife, tucked away in your roadside emergency kit or "get home" bag.

    • @knifecenter

      The term finger-safe simply means that your fingers are never in the path of the blade when closing. Awful hard to do that with lock backs. Does that mean they are unsafe? No. -DCA

    Michrotech otf's are terrible, I have 2. Do not buy them.
    My first one failed on the second attempt, and was hard to deploy (troodon),
    My second otf is bone breaking hard to deploy, so hard that the skin under my nail started detaching from my nail. 🤐
    Get any other otf, that is my recommendation.
