This song I feel tells a very interesting story in the perspective the lunar guard both young and old. As if before the Princess Luna rebelled, their was a battle. A battle that had taken those who were the simplest of creatures far from home. And as the cold winter approached, they hutted together among the others who were cold in trenches or gutters. (Most likely the crystal empire, when king Sombra ruled). And when they thought their sacrifices would mean something, in the end it was worth nothing. Leaving those soldiers who lost what their final chance for victory and the lost to mean something, freezing and alone. Returning with scars and an emptiness as those they fought boo and hiss them for their actions, that is for the ones who were lucky. But later in time Princess Luna came to their dreams and told of better times. As she forgave their crimes and promise to never forget them, even if the solar sister did. They soon followed the princess of the night, becoming nocturnal and bearing different colors. They soon aided the Lunar sister, in hopes of regaining their honor and setting things right. For in the end they all saw a different light. But then as the new guard looks at the sacrifices of those who came before. Seeing that the time of righteousness and honor, is now gone. Seeing good and evil is now grey, and a new cruel impasse is drawn. For in the end no matter if their intentions were good or evil, they knew no side was right. But weather in day or the night, they still saw their own light. So once the sun fades and the sky turns grey, they will see a calling they will obey. To protect the land that shines by the moons light. For they are brothers and sisters, and they will move as one as solders of the night.

The original just has to be one of my favorite songs this fandom has ever produced. It may not be as polished as some of the new stuff but I still listen to it regularly even after all these years. With that in mind, my expectations for this cover were very high. I have to say it exceeded all of them. I love every part of this song. I was actually part of an all-Brony Nerf spec-ops team in college. The zombies feared us during the humans vs zombies games. We wore the New Lunar Republic patch and bore Princess Luna’s symbol on our battle flag and listened to this song a lot.

(Soft music) -We then see Equestria and several villages peacefully sleeping as the Soldiers of the Night make their way through the forests and to the castle. Just then, a royal guard looks down at something and with a shocked look on his face runs off to Celestia's chamber. (Repeat Chorus) -Clad in armor and weapons drawn, the soldiers march in unison through several sleeping villages to reach the hill that leads to Canterlot in order to finish what Nightmare Moon started. To bring eternal night to Equestria and all of its inhabitants. And those that get in the way will be destroyed under the Princess of the Night. (Repeat Bridge) -Finally making it to Celestia's chamber, the royal guard wakes her up to tell her something very important. With shock in her eyes, Celestia looks outside at the hill the soldiers will climb to get to Canterlot. Not waiting to be late, she calls all the royal guards and the all move out. (Music) -As the Soldiers of the Night make it to the hill, we see a split screen of Celestia and the royal guards marching up the same hill to the top. As both sides march upwards, we see stones, helmets and rusted armor laid out on the ground as the leaders and the soldiers of the Night start to fade away the closer they get to the top of the mountain. Finally, as the music dies down, we see Celestia and the royal guards make it to the top and standing before them is a shrine built just atop the mountain to honor the lives lost in the battle that took place there several years ago. Every year, Celestia places a bunch of flowers at the foot of the shrine and bows her head in honor. On the base, a Silver sign reads: "May those that are lost and alone in the dark be guided to our doorstep, where they will be loved and remembered for all eternity by a light that will never stop shining". The end.
Right, it took me a month to listen to this, and I'm sorry about that. But this is amazing. The melody and instruments give a more calming feel to this amazing piece and really bring everything together! Keep up the great work my friend!

As someone who’d never heard of the original until you posted this and linked it, this was pretty good. I don’t like when the actual song stops, and it takes a break to actual dialogue that isn’t even spoken to the beat. I don’t enjoy that in any songs.

Personally, I like both. The first was a great song, one I used to pace around to for hours, but it had a lot of energy and only really slowed down for a directly somber mood. This one feels more like it would be used for a NLR recruitment video or something.

I've listen to both versions of this song a lot and the same idea for a possible PMV always comes to mind:

-Imagery showing how the followers of Nightmare Moon are now depressed and broken by the loss of their savior and are forced to live in poor conditions compared to the cozy and prosperous lives of Celestia and her supporters.

The royal Princess of the Night forgave us for our crimes
And as the Solar Sister overlooked us, nocturnal we became

-Remembering how better things were for them when they supported Nightmare Moon and her ambitions, they now view themselves as in the right by seeing visions of the savior reappear to them in their dreams encouraging them to rise up and take back what they lost.
"You now belong to a greater good, and you answer to a higher call!
You are part of the best and greatest, and there is no room for failure!
You will leave behind all weakness! You are no longer a mortal!
You are a indestructible Soldier of the Night!"
-With their beliefs back and stronger than ever, her followers start doing some intense training, as hinting by the exercise noises, and begin training to create powerful soldiers of the night.
"As the sunset fades away, the yellow turns to grey
The moonlight shines across the land, a calling we obey
The purest black of shadows rise to fight a greater fight
My brothers and sisters move as one, we Soldiers of the Night"
-Throughout the night, the newly made soldiers of the night start gathering more followers to their cause and continue to spread their message to other followers still in hiding. All while staying under Celestia's radar.
"We stand at arms before our liege, each of us just a pawn and now
We reign supreme throughout the dark, until the light of dawn
The memories we left behind us might cripple lesser men
But those of us brought back from nothing have risen once again
We see it in her moonlit eyes, a fury held at bay
A battle waiting in the ashes, to resume another day
And as we disappear into the shadows, we fill their souls with dread
We fight tonight to rule tomorrow, and a dark day lies ahead"
-As time goes on, they gather more and more followers to their cause due to the cover of darkness keeping all of their secrets hidden from the light. Ready to strike at any moment, they wait patiently in the shadows to carryout their ultimate plan. With tales of possible followers of Nightmare Moon still out there, some fear that a darker day might be around the corner.
(Repeat chorus)
-We then see just how large their numbers have grown with full lines of Night soldiers marching in place while others in the foregrounds and backgrounds are watching and training. Afterwards, a montage begins, showing the followers becoming more public with their beliefs, passing out coded flyers, secretly meeting in dark alleys, and speaking to large crowds of ponies about the glory and strength of the night. We see some pass it off as nonsense while others stay and listen, eventually joining the cause and spreading the message to other parts of Equestria. Creating several shadow cells throughout the land in the process. This eventually catches Celestia's attention but not wanting to cause further division and memories of that faithful day, she lets the ponies who believe in their words continue to gather.
"The times we live in now have changed, honor is long gone, and now that
Good and evil are shades of grey, a cruel impasse is drawn
For all the good we have created, it doesn't make us right
But those of us who hide in darkness see a different kind of light"
-With the sun finally set and their numbers now up to revolutionary status, the years of waiting for this final moment has come. With the leaders at the front of the line, they look back over all the ponies that they've gathered throughout the years one last time and begin to march forward.
(Soft music)
-We then see Equestria and several villages peacefully sleeping as the Soldiers of the Night make their way through the forests and to the castle. Just then, a royal guard looks down at something and with a shocked look on his face runs off to Celestia's chamber.
(Repeat Chorus)
-Clad in armor and weapons drawn, the soldiers march in unison through several sleeping villages to reach the hill that leads to Canterlot in order to finish what Nightmare Moon started. To bring eternal night to Equestria and all of its inhabitants. And those that get in the way will be destroyed under the Princess of the Night.
(Repeat Bridge)
-Finally making it to Celestia's chamber, the royal guard wakes her up to tell her something very important. With shock in her eyes, Celestia looks outside at the hill the soldiers will climb to get to Canterlot. Not waiting to be late, she calls all the royal guards and the all move out.
(Music)
-As the Soldiers of the Night make it to the hill, we see a split screen of Celestia and the royal guards marching up the same hill to the top. As both sides march upwards, we see stones, helmets and rusted armor laid out on the ground as the leaders and the soldiers of the Night start to fade away the closer they get to the top of the mountain. Finally, as the music dies down, we see Celestia and the royal guards make it to the top and standing before them is a shrine built just atop the mountain to honor the lives lost in the battle that took place there several years ago. Every year, Celestia places a bunch of flowers at the foot of the shrine and bows her head in honor. On the base, a Silver sign reads:
"May those that are lost and alone in the dark be guided to our doorstep, where they will be loved and remembered for all eternity by a light that will never stop shining".
The end.

Meanwhile, in the taverns of Equestria, after dark.

As someone who’d never heard of the original until you posted this and linked it, this was pretty good. I don’t like when the actual song stops, and it takes a break to actual dialogue that isn’t even spoken to the beat. I don’t enjoy that in any songs.
