If she loved those 3 so much why could she not tell them the whole story. Mike Lazarus was my step brother who loved me and killed my pedo father for me. He went to jail and we both changed our names and made something of ourselves. He became a gangster, got rich and invested in the movie business to get close to me. Finally, he demanded I marry him or he would get gangster on all those whom i loved. I had no choice. In the end I found comfort in being with my childhood protector and do love him in a strange way but I hate him in some ways too. I am his prisoner. He keeps me isolated in a big palace, my career ended but at least I can spend my days in leisure. Thats why i left so abruptly. I did it to protect you 3. I have accepted my place in life and will remain Mrs Lazarus until I die. Please forgive me. And that would have been that but she was all so keen to remain a mystery.

What a movie ! I guess Katharine returned to Mike to pay off the debt she owed to him . He did save her from her tormentor by killing him for her and serving a jail sentence for it .
Good film. I wonder why Catherine had to go back to the Island? So confusing... She says she will stay with the people who love her. I can't stand Mike Lazarus and his glasses.Even if Catherine was dying... she shouldn't stay with that Mike Lazarus... Though he had a soft look when Catherine returned to the Island. He looks human without glasses and he showed us some emotions when he told Catherine.. "I thought I had driven you away. How long are you staying here for? "

I enjoyed this movie very much. And yes, I believe she did tell her friends she was dieing, to protect them. She could have stayed in New York, but after her friends forgave her, she was at peace with herself....... that's my theory.😉
I'm sure she repented for the rest of her natural life in the company of Mike Lazarus, comforted by the knowledge that her 3 best friends would be safe from the wrath of the jealous man he became.

I think her decision to go back to her nightmare was to safe guard her friends. She will pay the price for their successful lives. If she doesn't have a tumor and doesn't die before Mike, I would like to think that she will return to her friends and reveal once again her intention.
