I am unemployed and i also lack some skills but what you did made my Hope up and thus i am going to be an self taught painter and thank you for showing how to build an this beautiful diy project
Nice work dear Wayne Dowsent. Great video. I really enjoyed. Here are the specified measurements for those who are asking frequently: 3 x 2.4 meter pieces of timbers which are 7 cms wide and 2 cms thick. 1 hinge. some screws about 25mm size. 20mm diameter dowel (100-110mm length 2 pieces) Rope. measuring tape, hand saw, a screw driver and drilling machine. Cut the timbers as follows: 2 x 1.8 meter long (Main Legs) 1 x 1.5 meter long (Back Leg) 1 x 68 cms Long (Cross piece) 1 x 23 cms Long (Cross piece) (legs angle cut about 1.5 cm from one to other end as advised by a Gentle Man below) Hope this will help. Enjoy!! Thanks again Mr. Wayne Dowsent.
Watched this video yesterday. Realized today I had all of the materials already in the garage. Literally took me less than an hour to put this together. Great video, great design, Thanks!
Thanks so much for that mate, I had to make one for a wedding that was pushed forward and was in a rush with the decorations - this literally took me 30 minutes and now I can breathe. You're a legend!! such a life saver xx
So my 8 yr old wanted an easel so terribly bad. I saw the price and thought, there's just no way I can buy that for her. However, having recently renovated our home sister beams and infrastructure, I knew we had scrap wood left. Today, my daughter's birthday, she got an easel!! That I made no less! This is a blessing! Thank you!
I love this easel plan. I'll be building another two of these today which will make five of these I've had altogether. My ex husband made my first one, a friend made my second, his daughter has it now, I made my third and gave it to someone in urgent need and now I'll be making two more for meeeee! Thank you so much. I'm surprised this video doesn't have more views. I thought it would be in the millions by now!
Thanks for this video! As a total beginner woodworker, the steps were so easy to follow! I have made one easel - the first thing I have ever made in wood. It is a bit wonk, (the top edges of the A frame are not straight but it works! I just have to remember to use the "all important tape measure" more accurately. I will be making another one soon. Thanks again!
Omg I have literally been searching everywhere to learn how to make one of these and I've actually tried what's so many differentchannels on TH-cam and some of them came out really great but the fact of the matter is is that this is the easiest build I've ever seen great job
Thank u for this my daughter loves her art she does everyday shes a naturaly flair and talent though was doing it at the table so by having an easel her posture can stay with no back problems thanks again
Like Laura your last comment maker I too need an easel for a wedding event, now I've watched a fair few videos, just for different ideas and you're style is the we are going with, the clincher was the height adjustable element. The best part is I don't need to watch anymore easel videos, thanks mate 👍
You video put right my dilemma. I was going to build a screw-pressure monstrosity trying to imitate what they sell commercially. Then I came on your video. And hey, I noticed in a photo of Rembrandt's studio his easel was exactly this design... and a good design it is! Thank you very much, Wayne.
I love this video!! You make it look so simple. I, too, am used to standard measurements but most tape measures have the metric sizes on the other side. Hopefully, my husband will make one for me so I can use it for wreath making. Thanks so much for taking the time to share this!!
Great! Simple! Cheap! Looks Sturdy. Video quality and organization is great. Audio is clear, though your accent is not quite like mine. :) I may have all the parts in my garage. I'm in the US, so I'll have to see if any of my tape measures are metric. (If only we'd kept on or plan to convert to metric in the 70's!) Thank you!
I love your plans. I am wanting to use the easel for very large canvases such as 60 inches wide and 50 inches high. Do you think this size would work or do I need to make some adjustments in the plans. Thanks!
Wayne, Thanks so much for sharing this video. My wife enjoys painting and I was able to follow your detailed instructions to make her and I our own easels. Great stuff!
I loved this video. I've been doing a lot of DIY wood work projects this year, and I love them, from acoustic panels to wall mounted desks, and I've only been using a $20 hand-saw while laying my 2x4's across 2 buckets, putting my foot on top to hold in place, followed by hunching over and sawing away. It hasn't been fun, but I (laugh as you will) never imagined such a convenient thing as a miter saw existed! In shop class in high school we had a great big table saw. That and a chain saw were the only wood cutting power tools I really knew existed. So your video just showed me the magic that is the compound miter saw! THAT THING LOOKS AWESOME! I know what I'll be reviewing, and hopefully buying this weekend ;) I don't need sliding, but 10" vs 12" will be a choice to deeply consider... And of course, thank you for the very descriptive video. I'll be making one of these for my mom, after I buy that amazing saw (I'm not buying it for JUST this project, so no worries)
Great, simple easel! Thanks so much for posting. I'm new to this but do have access to a miter saw. What are: 1) angles for the bottom of the legs, 2) angles on the 230mm and 670mm cross members, 3) diameter of holes, 4) length of dowels? Thanks for the help!
+Sharon Katz G'day there!! 1. I normally guess the angle...an easy way is to lay the easel flat on a tiled floor or something that has a horizontal line in it so you can mark the bottom of the easel the same way. 2. When you lay your A frame on the ground just lay the cross pieces on it and mark and cut before screwing. 3. Length of dowels are 100-110mm. Remember that the holes in the frame need to be smaller and the dowel ends tapered. Good luck and have fun!!
Thank you for this "easy - to - follow" video. Am going to try and adapt the measurements to be able to make myself a table-top easel with drawers ... or, do you have a video showing yourself making one of those, already? Thank you for answering if you will. And, thanks again for this video. It has really given me the incentive to make my own T-T easel as I feel I must, because the ones that are pre-made are either waaay too expensive, or, just cheaply made. Am gonna make my own!!!
Howdy, informative video. I like your plans better than the others I've seen. Do you know the proper angles to miter the splayed legs at? Is the angle the same for the cross-pieces? Thanks again!
Hey, thanks for the video. I made my own using your video for about $8.00. I didn't use the same width wood for the back leg or cross beams, so was a bit cheaper. One tip: if you're taller you might want to make the two lengths 8 feet rather than 6 feet tall (1.8 meters). The dowels were a great idea and make this very flexible. Thanks again.
This Video.. has blown my small insignificant mind away... and you think I am joking?.. No Sir.. this is more valuable than MONEY... and proves that ''Knowledge is POWER''.. Wot a Geezer wot a pleaser.. WOT A BLOKE !... You could persuade me into Gayness.. lol...
Hi Rose, I'm thinking you mean 800mm. Make the back leg 500mm, and keep the small cross piece at the top about 230mm, the same as I do in the video. The bottom cross piece I would make about 430mm and I would screw it to the very bottom of the two front legs so that it actually sits on the table. This will make the whole thing very stable. Good luck with it!!
Would be nice if you'd mentioned the dimensions for those of us using Imperial. The hinge is a simplier way to attach it than some other person suggesting multiple pieces of wood. A chain could work just as well. On the cross piece that would hold the canvas, i'm thinking maybe a 1x2 horizontal piece and one on the edge. If the cross member piece doesn't want to stay put, I suppose a screw in the end with a larger washer would be enough to help hold it in place. On cutting the holes for the dowels, if you get those off, your cross member won't be level. I think laying the two boards on top of one another, clamping them together and then drilling the holes would get them just right.
Hi Wayne, great project but unsure about a couple of dimensions. First is the crossmember, it sounds like you say 670mm long and I only have about 630mm left after cutting my 1.8m legs. Second, what is the measurement I see you make from the base of the legs to the bottom of the crossmember? Thanks and keep up the great projects. Ron
Ron Sorrell Hi Ron, just check the video again...but if the crossmember falls a little short I wouldn't be to concerned. You can make changes to suit your needs if you wish. Let me know how you go.
Hi Wayne, I'm new to art however enjoying it. I've booked to do a plein air workshop in April. Do you think this easel would be suitable to use outdoors providing it's not blowing a gale?

awesome! a basic tutorial. quick question though... at what angle do you cut the pieces of pine to sit squarely on the floor?also the angle of the small brace at the top. cheers .
+Beki Davies I basically guess the angle...but you could run a line from the outer edge of one leg across to the other and that would give you a straight line for cutting. The top brace can be marked by just sitting it in place first. Thanks for watching!!
I am unemployed and i also lack some skills but what you did made my Hope up and thus i am going to be an self taught painter and thank you for showing how to build an this beautiful diy project

WOW! A big thank you Jayan!!!
should be ft. and in. for us americans
Or you can put on your big boy panties, and convert it yourself. It's not that difficult. Google can help you if you're bad at math.
I made it and people loved it. My daughter asked if she could keep it.
Those sizes are as sold. There is no allowance for dressing (and the timber most easily bought here is dressed).

This is by far the best one for me. Nothing fancy and minimal materials used. Well done. Subbed and liked.
Thanks Relic Hunter!!
that was simple but perfect, nicely done man , and thanks for sharing your experience

Great point!👍
Dude April! Instant upvote for that crescendo from April! Nailed it!
Hi Wayne!! Thanks for your great video, very well done!!
I have looked around a little and your's is the best!!
I like how you held it in place with your foot. I do that too!! Wonderful job on the easel, and thanks for taking the time to share with us!
angel haarp You are very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thanks mate, good of you to share. Off to the DIY shop with my shopping list right now!
Thanks for the idea -- I made a table top easel based on your design and it works great.

Thank you for doing this wonderful video! Can't wait to see if I can manage to make one!
Good luck Montana Grey!!!

Howdy, informative video. I like your plans better than the others I've seen. Do you know the proper angles to miter the splayed legs at? Is the angle the same for the cross-pieces? Thanks again!
Yes it's the same because they run parallel to the floor. Thanks for watching!

Great video, thank you. Looking to make a stand for my archery target and this easy design will give me a great foundation. Cheers

Very nice and simple. Thanks for share this!
Nice job. I must make one or maybe even teo of them.❤
Go for it!
Your video is very useful... Thanks bro!
No worries mate!
This is fantastic! Just what we needed- thank you so much!
You're very welcome!!
Hi Tyler, I'm not sure what angle to cut them at. What I do is put it together then cut after.
Very helpful video and was able to make this out of scrap 2x3's very sturdy !. :)
Way to go!!
You've saved me a lot of 💲💲. Thank you👏👏
You are very welcome.😁👍
Hi Rose, I'm thinking you mean 800mm. Make the back leg 500mm, and keep the small cross piece at the top about 230mm, the same as I do in the video.
Great ideas for sure! There are Imperial measurements somewhere in the comments section if you care to browse. 😁👍
Thank you, simply and cheap....I like it..
Thank you so much, great help.
You're welcome!👍
Hi Wayne, great project but unsure about a couple of dimensions. First is the crossmember, it sounds like you say 670mm long and I only have about 630mm left after cutting my 1.8m legs.
Second, what is the measurement I see you make from the base of the legs to the bottom of the crossmember? Thanks and keep up the great projects.
Ron
Ron Sorrell Hi Ron, just check the video again...but if the crossmember falls a little short I wouldn't be to concerned. You can make changes to suit your needs if you wish. Let me know how you go.
How wide and thick is the timber you used
Oh dude this is so sick, I'm going to go make me one now!
You saved me really thank you so much ❤❤❤
You're welcome!😀
Hi Wayne, I'm new to art however enjoying it. I've booked to do a plein air workshop in April. Do you think this easel would be suitable to use outdoors providing it's not blowing a gale?
Gillian Meddings Absolutely!!
nice instructional video with great tips
What angle did you cut the legs and cross-members at? sort of a trivial detail, but good to know.
Hello would you be able to help me with Making a tall thread rack single and double sided by chance.. ?
Very Nice 🥰🥰🥰
You are welcome!🤩👍
anyone know the conversions to inches/feet? online conversions are not right or i'm definitely doing something wrong.
Great idea I just finished mine $25. Thank you.
Fantastic!🤩👍
I will be trying to make this next week, looks simple enough for an old lady to make,
could you give me the measurements for a an easel 80mm high, it is to stand on a table for the table seating plan at the entrance to the wedding venue. your help would be greatfuly appreciated.
awesome! a basic tutorial. quick question though... at what angle do you cut the pieces of pine to sit squarely on the floor?also the angle of the small brace at the top. cheers .
+Beki Davies I basically guess the angle...but you could run a line from the outer edge of one leg across to the other and that would give you a straight line for cutting. The top brace can be marked by just sitting it in place first. Thanks for watching!!
Is there a reason for the bottom horizontal bar to be in front rather than behind the legs?
thank you very much Im just loocking for something like that. excellent
piedad. Colombia- south america
Piedad Gomez Very welcome bro!
What were the angles for the bottom of the front legs for they lay flat? What about the angles of the cross beams?
by far the best one i have seen
Thanks heaps!!
Awesome. Thank you. I am making two! Easier than trying to source two that I need for an awards night and cheap too.
Whats the best way to taper the dowels?
I used a sanding wheel, but you could use a sharp blade & then just sand them.😁👍
What is the height of the lower crosspiece?
Nice and simple. Thanks.
Good to see ideas for easels
Thanks Sharard.
What angle are you cutting those inner pieces at?
I just guess it.
