My scotts jd mower has been down for 2 mos. This video gave me the courage to order the part, and fix it at the first opportunity I had! I must say, with an installed engine, there are more bolts, grounds and an odd little box next to the oil tube. I didn't know the coil was magnetized to the stater connection. it was hard to remove the biz card, so I played it by sight on the finite distance between the two. In the end, I let my son hop on board, turn the key, and VOILA! THANK YOU!!!!

Hello, your repair is well done, you can perhaps inform me because I have a john deere lt133 mower close to your lt155. There is an electrical contact at the back next to the gearbox which is operated by the gear lever. What exactly is it for?Thank you .Best regards

Great video. What is the difference between the 584 and 584-s. Coil. For coil on 23 hp Kohler engine. I can only find the 584 coil. Looks same will that work????

What is the purpose of the business card? there was music playing over the video and I couldn't hear the narrative?

Thanks! It worked on my JD110. Now if we can just figure out why the spark plug cord won't seat on the plug...

You have to adjust the clip portion of the wire to accommodate the diameter of your spark plug.

So the small red wire is a grounding wire? (on the ignition coil)

My John Deere lawn tractor has recently had problems. It has a 15HP Kohler engine, and after it heats up will stall out. I've changed the plug, air and fuel filters but no success. I suspect the coil, and I believe I can handle that job. I simply don't know how to check the system out to properly pinpoint the problem.

First you need to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition issue. I would wait till the engine stops then either try and see if you are getting spark by putting a known good spark plug on the plug wire and ground it while turning the engine over to see if you are getting spark. You can leave the hot one in the engine. If you have spark you have a fuel issue. If you don’t have spark you might have a bad ignition coil. You can also try spraying a little starting fluid in the air cleaner after it stops, if it runs a few seconds then quits you have a fuel issue.

This is the second video I watched on replacing the coil without ever hearing mention of the actual gap the coil should be set at in relation to the flywheel. You people do know that cardstock comes in different thicknesses don't you? I guess no one knows how to operate a feeler gauge in dumbed down America these days. FYI, ten thousandths is what one mechanic on TH-cam reports.

@Rollie Motor Well it seems that close is close enough here, kinda like mixing epoxy. Sorry if I seemed too critical.

Set it to 0.010 inch gap

@@clybrown Thanks, I've always been anal about gaps as my comment clearly shows and I was just aggravated at some problems I was encountering on this repair when I posted the original comment. Plus I'm not what anyone would ever call adept at this sort of thing, not anymore at least. Fun fact, I've since gotten a new mower so the old one can't hurt me anymore!
