Everyone is complaining about the interruptions from the audience, but the interaction between the teacher and the learners is really important in the process of learning. It made the video difficult for us at home to watch, because we couldnt join in, but for those in the room and for the teacher, it makes the experience relevant to them and holds their attention. The teacher would have welcomed the interruptions because it shows him his audience is paying attention and his teaching feeds off their participation.

True. But I cannot understand why they laughed at some of the points or remarks. These were not jokes or meant to be funny; it was information he was communicating.
In those cases, I found it annoying.

I got the impression some of them just wanted to talk, they didn't seem to be taking the information in. You could see the teacher was anxious to be able to move on to the other 2/3 of his talk, that we all missed. Should do Q&A afterward.

If I believe I'm a sociopath and I'm willing to say that I believe I'm a sociopath - am I negating the possibility of myself being a sociopath simply because socipaths don't tell the truth - especially when asked if they are sociopaths?

    4:04 Personal story, fear response
    5:47 Patterns tend to repeat
7:55 People don't believe lies cuz they have to, they do so cuz they want to
9:42 Types of lies (lies of omission, misdirection, influence/perception); omission and influence are most common
    LoInf move u off target
11:05 Presenting problem is always a lie cuz this is the symptom not the root cause
    12:11 Triune brain
Reptile brain (survival, reproduction, social needs, food)
12:35 Three questions or lose interest at first time interactions (is it a threat? can I mate with it? do I eat it?)
14:01 Sizing up, reptilian brain status appraisal
As a social being, society protects high status members even in modern culture which is why we're driven to earn approval or appraisal of money, status, more beauty, physical resources, more power (status markers) used by reptilian brain status appraisal to assess (sizing up)
We lie to satisfy primal drives survival-based social needs cuz ostracization from group = death, extinction
16:08 Women and the pesky mechanic
17:54 Activate primal drive = 20 min of attention
18:43 3 Is (identity, intelligence, influence)
Most powerful indicator of results u produce in life is foundation of identity, yours and who u interact with. Are u the leader or the follower? The outcast? The herd leader or follower
19:39 When primal drive need is satisfied, reptilian brain generates emotion ie positive or negative stress; when that stress hits, everything you pay attention to, think is important, changes
20:10 micro-expressions, (dis)appear in 1/25th of a second; usually not controllable by average person
    21:07 Emotional refractory period.
People wanna believe lies for the emotional payoff
    Neocortex
22:44 drive (reptilian, unconscious) creates emotions (emotional) and u generate a story (pfc) to rationalize it to yourself, to God, to society u live in.
The story, rationalizations, have nothing to do with the real issue, but they sound good eg losing weight (presenting problem, cortex) has to do with gaining weight to be not attractive (real problem, unconscious mind, drive)
Accessing unconscious mind by altering state of consciousness
24:25 Rational Brain is linear thinker, controls most of internal voices
24:52 Reptilian Brain doesn't lie. Most of the time emotional Brain doesn't, tho it tries
Lying is when we manipulate the process that helps escape the consequences of our actions, when we try to consciously control the process of modulation of drives. Looking for lies is to look for stress response (body signals away from equilibrium)
27:35 Pearl formation as metaphor (a pearl is made when smth irritating is in an oyster like a grain of sand. by the end, it's covered by a substance created by oyster till it becomes a pearl. so u have primal drive, wants to satisfy need, wrap emotion after emotion and rationalization and rationalization till the thing u defend (ur story) has nothing to do with the real drive or thing (grain of sand)
30:12 Enlightenment (not to look for something outside of u, but to be more aware to reality, removing illusions, clearing the perceptual filters)
32:37 Act of controlling emotional response to lying allows it to be detected using rational brain
We conceal info, distort it, generalize it preconsciously to communicate
34:49 Find out normal mode of behavior or baseline (nonverbal cues deviation from their normal)
Interrogation vs interview = more stress, the faster u lose control of body, face, hand, words, (conscious mind). All lies incur some stress
36:11 Self-soothing behavior to alleviate stress psychologically or physically distance from it. Depends on time to prepare, consequence of being caught lying, emotional involvement in issue, whether good at lying or not, wanna lie or not
36:43 Cluster rule (no single cue by itself means anything)
Clusters of cues' interpretation depends on ur perceptual filters, what u attribute to the person ur observing, depending on ur emotional state too
37:40 U don't get a signal before an emotional state change. U realise 10-15 secs within it, but then it's too late so u then try to control the emotion using shoulding (conscious mind control) and ur body gives it away! The body doesn't lie
38:33 To detect lies, start from feet up (not words, face)
39:51 Clue 1: sudden obvious emotional response, can be Unconscious (childhood, memory). Per emotional refractory period, this new emotional state will change what u focus on, so triggers

Everyone who is complaining about the audience input: David clearly opens up and invites people to ask questions and calls on people to answer them as well. He knows how boring a lecture where someone just talks at you is. The fact that there is so much interaction shows how good he is at making a whole audience of people feel comfortable. He is not bothered by people participating with him at all, in fact he initiates it. If you find this interaction distracting then I think you might be missing some secret knowledge in the video, which is about understanding the mechanics of people in general, not just about "spotting a liar". People would have walked away from this talk feeling energised and more inclined to open up discussion with each other. This is proper teaching IMO.

    • @rugfixr
      @rugfixr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

There's a difference though between interacting and co-opting the presentation. When someone starts talking about 'their practice; wanting to give examples and lessons from "their practice" we have moved from someone desiring an answer, to someone desiring the floor.

Don’t mind the people getting mad over the audience, they are just narcissists getting mad people aren’t acting the way they want them to. Psychology and learning new skills to play tricks on the mind is something that fascinates the narc, so you’ll see many of them congregating on videos like this.

That equals...profits! I'm 29 minutes into this video and can easily relate to what he's saying. He is so right. Compare(perspective) this 29 minutes to the last 2000 minutes of useless "news" I observe on every last local news channel in my city. I learned more verification of my well earned studies of 30 years in 29 minutes while seeing the "news" reporting nothing to teach me useful information in a minimum of 2000 minutes. That's a 69 to 1 ratio if I divide 2000 minutes by 29 minutes of "real news". Yet look at all the people complaining about "distractions". Too sad they can't figure out that virtually every local news station is really just "reporting" versus teaching. It's just distraction news! How ironic that these same people are so easily "distracted" by less than 15 seconds of "distraction" in 29 minutes!!! I know all about the psychology and that's why I'm here! What's the medical term for being so easily distracted? It's ADHD.

Hello David.may I make a suggestion? Your talk was interesting but disjointed because of so many interuptions of questions and comments from audience members. May I suggest you ask audience members to wait untill the end of your presentation and THEN discuss and ask their questions.... I found all the questions and comments frustrating because I wanted to hear your presentation..thanks..

Thank you, for sharing this knowledge. Because this series of seminars are available free of charge, what follows should not be interpreted as ingratitude. It is frustration. Within the first minute, it is obvious Mr. Snyder is an exceptionally well versed professional. The constant questions that interrupt his train of thought are extremely distracting. In the future, perhaps questions should be presented at the close of the seminar, with attendees jotting down their thoughts to remind them of their queries. I found the interruptions extremely disrespectful and the Professor's willingness to engage these individuals an exercise in patience and tolerance.

Ive been a mechanic professionally for over 3 decades and interacting with many walks of life about their vehicle needs has been a natural thing for me as I win people over by exampling the truth of what was found or diagnosed yet in that arena so many times Ive found the stripped down truth that you cant make any drink the water your offering due to a multitude of things be it inability to comprehend the mechanical failure or the absence of initial trust from being told lies prior or cheated out of extra money in a maliscious fashion by dishonest ethics practiced to gain from greed, and several other factors, like their own knowledge where mistrained or poorly understood even partially knowledged thinking where applying a repair or action excecuted could lead to further or instant damaged products now being the "why" they are before your services needed.
Where one thinks they know a possible conflict could easily rise and lead two to disagreeing and both lose an opportunity to help each other in a cordisl integral manner. Some even deny their mistakes and beleive in no wrong done as well as lies told to me the mechanic they sought out skilled help from. It is seen prominently and mechanics often take the brunt of the common thought of being one of dishonesty. The way to recognize the truth is certainly by recognizing also the patterns that humans or creatures of habit will express. One word strikes home more than any other and that is in my mind "observation"
Seeing patterns is indeed the truth of your now reality where engaging in and with others, groups create a different setting and younger persons will often opinion why this or why not that or ask as if entitled the price is too high or how do we know this fixes their problem.
First of all we are not them or your party or you and I will fix the issue based upon my training efforted to learn troubleshooting and problem solving skills and awareness.
Proper diagnostics do solve issues when you put effort in doing so. The family teenagers will not fix the issue but they will influence stress and interfere with dear old dads mindset as he didnt want to drive to the dealer shop in the first place and he figures alot and wants to leave and shove ice cream in his young broods faces so they can return and think with me again how we find a useful solution to his dilemma and now were getting closer to helping each other. Pattern recognition is an awesome tool I highly commend its awareness by observing simply listening and having stoic patience and remarking only enough to apply a solution that increases trust and potential retained business.
I hope the awareness increases in those who need it most, thank you Dr. Snyder your videos are wonderful ingormative skills that helped me increase all of these skills, your appreciated sir.

@ TheBob19d ... Yes, In a manner of speaking you are "pacing" but you are doing it from their perspective, NLP would call it "mind reading" liars are looking for allies and rationales that get them off the hook by justifying their actions or placing the blame on someone else. when an interrogator/interviewer is "befriending/pacing" the subject He is offering the liar an illusion of alliance and handing them a series of plausible justifications that liar can latch on too. What the liar often doesn't realize is that "any" admission of guilt, or re-framing of their story tells the interviewer a lot more than the subject realizes.
The interviewer if he can't get a confession will start to look for bargaining behaviors, and other "tell tale signs" the subject is being deceptive.

  • @nounix
    @nounix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Dear David, LOVED your presentation. Part 2 next to watch! :) :) If you ever have the time to reply, please answer this: How can you tell (or have a pretty close idea about) if someone is lying (someone who is close to you - who therefore feels free enough to express his/her emotions at will with you) if whenever you ask a question within a conversation that he/she could potentially feel "threatened" would give away the truth he/she may be concealing, he/she reacts emotional? But their story - what they will hold, that is - is that they could "see what this question was REALLY asking", and this therefore makes them feel "insulted" by the way my question questions his/her veracity/loyalty/correctness? I mean if I PRETEND to get "offended" by a question, or actually DO get offended by it, then both these 2 scenarios would "explain"/"excuse" my heightened emotional reaction to the questioning wouldn't it?...
I'm asking this because as far back as I can remember, in 9 of 10 situations where I asked a question (direct or indirect) when something felt "out of place", that's the reaction I ALWAYS got. So in my experience, that's - by far - the most common reaction. So if all the "indicators" ARE there (jittering, putting objects between us, other body language etc etc), but this could be EITHER because someone is actually lying, OR this someone is NOT lying (but just gets "insulted" by the questioning), then nothing can be ascertained by any of these reactions, right?

Many times in martial arts, that is how it is taught. It may not be done so much in a large martial arts class, but when someone is use to teaching martial arts one on one. Then that teaching method can evolve to more than one, and to larger and larger groups.

Then you stated denial, but it's not just lying to yourself. If you said to me, "You 're cheating on me" My response: "I am NOT!" that is denial too. Denying the accusation. Another one is gaslighting: You're crazy, or what you think is not true, or that's not reality.

He told me he arrived in this country with $10 in his pocket and now had four companies, a couple of houses, etc. He drove an expensive car and was exceptionally good looking and charming, which is why I got taken in. I was in Mexico City some years ago, and there was a woman with four small children asking for money. I gave her some. The following day, I saw the same woman on a different corner with four different children. I learned the hard way never to trust anybody. Sad commentary on human nature.

He needs to create a rule where no questions. They need to write them down. Most of their questions weren't clarifying or furthered the lecture. A lot of them were challenging him or the questions were essentially him just repeating the information he just gave.

SE Todd That’s correct. The blame is with the presenter, not the presentation. I’m still not sure what the problem is with most on these threads, the good Doctor obviously wants participation because he may not want to give a boring lecture, or the appearance of one. This is his style of lecturing. I’m at the 1:04:35 mark, so I don’t mind it, and if I did, I would’ve left at the 10 min mark.

You are a very good speaker (and good improv too) I liked to see how at first the audience was quiet and reserved but you slowly opened them up and they started laughing more and participating and telling stories and even getting bold enough to cut you off mid-sentence to introduce a bit of humorous wit.

WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT THAT !?? NOTHING !! MORE PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT THE VERY SAME THING !!
THAT IN ITSELF SHOWS THAT IT DETRACTS FROM THE LEARNING OF THE SUBJECT !! OR MAYBE YOUR TO IGNORANT YOURSELF TO CARE ABOUT ACTUALLY LEARNING ANYTHING !! YOUR JUST LOOKING TO BE "ENTERTAINED" !!

My defenses come up to protect myself from evil people. I love how your lecture explains this. It’s not a super power, it’s a little genetics, experience and interest in these things on my part. Or a little research and hard work.

I loved your video on how to catch a liar. It was very insightful and enlightening. I wish that I would have seen it 2 or 3 years ago before my husband was arrested and sentenced to federal prison for so long. Now we can only communicate through email or phone calls as he is in a federal prison that's a little more than 5 hours away from me and I am disabled so I can't visit him very often and talk to him face to face. I am going to wait for him to get out and I will be here for him through the whole bit and he is going to come home to me when he gets out, but I don't think we are going to be worried about anything else but being together again and focusing on our future and our relationship with God.

I am so glad to have found your videos. I, like you am completely fascinated by this stuff. Psychology and neuroscience, brain development and just piecing together the things that make me understand why people do what. It is just... fascinating in the best kind of way. I also LOVE the way you present yourself to your students. Your logic is very similar to my own which makes the info very easy to process. For me that is great because I am very easily distracted if I can't see the logic in what a person is telling me. Like... I can't tell you how many times I've used any word I could find on a classroom wall to play my own games of text twist just to pass the time. You on the other hand Maintained my attention through the entire lecture. You're very funny which I find to be one of the best ways to make others relate and feel comfortable in your presence. You do a fine job engaging the interest of your viewer and I am already looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you for sharing such great insight. Subscribed btw... I so wanted to come in tell your students "hey.. psst. Here is what we do with jokes. 👉😬👈 laugh at the funny."

He's saying "nod" but I think he is actually referring to both nods and shakes. My understanding is that a nod is when the head moves up and down, in the affirmative, while a shake is when the head moves side to side, a negation. A head shake or a head nod should align with the feeling behind the words or else it is a tell. So if you are saying "I do not want to go to the dentist", you will shake your head (not nod it) when you are telling the truth. The reverse is true for head nods.

A person isnt lying because they say, "I'm 50 pounds overweight and would like help losing weight." That could be 100% true. Just because the weight is a symptom of something doesn't mean they are lying! The words themselves are not lies either. Just because they may be ignorant of the deeper issues, doesn't make the words into lies. Yes they need to go to the source of why they are over their desired weight.

Sometimes I can honestly say "I do" because it's better than coming to acceptance that you have been betrayed or whatever else the truth entails. Humans beings are awful creatures and when you have high morals and values, it's hard to find others that are in that boat. At least out here in Southern California (that's for sure) and coming from a old fashioned German family, I feel alone in my values and I'm always being lied too and backstabbed. But at least, I have the reputation for being the honest one. And my word is gold. No questions asked. I'm just always getting hurt when I let my guard down.
