  • This is an update of our previous tribute to Danie Gerber titled "Maestro Of The Midfield". It has all the original tries, plus a couple more we found over the last year.
The greatest Springbok ever. Sit back and enjoy.
    Thanks for watching!

I was a school boy in the 80's and those players was the ones I looked up to. Playing for pride and with passion , no contracts no bullshit just for the love of the game. The test where Gerber scored 3 tries against England at Ellis Park was the first test my father took me to see as a 12 year old and made me fall in love with this beautiful game for ever. I have huge respect for John Kirwan but there was no winger as powerful as Mordt in full flight or as majestic as Carel du Plessis (The Prince of wings) swerving his way through teams. So sad and heartbroken for them that they never got the opportunity to really shine, Imagine Gerber, Botha, Du Plessis & Mordt playing 50 + tests they would have set up records that would probably still be relevant today. The "Original Legends" of Rugby.

His work off the ball was outstanding - the quality of his support play and his lines of running were outstanding. Extraordinary acceleration, beautifully balanced running and wonderful stepping ability. Good enough to play now - no argument! The Springbok back line was exceptionally talented in his era but he still stood out.

Each time after scoring he just gets up, gives the ball to the fly-half and quickly jogs back to the halfway line to get on with business.

@@louisvanniekerk2612 A lot of dramatic hyperbole there. Gerber is obviously a legend but a few notable points. He played in an amateur game but may very well be the first player to ever regimentally follow a pro level training regime which he was well known for. His relative competition was substantially lower and the general standard of defence and attack also way lower. This is why comparing amateur v pro eras gets sticky and it's best just segregated. Keith wood famously didn't weight train so he would get folded by an average pro now in a scrum so you have to take him at face value relative to the competition at the time. players like lomu and Gerber are guys who were athletically way ahead of their time. They were obviously incredibly skillful as well but I haven't seen any clip of Gerber that I haven't or wouldn't have seen BOD do. Can't say the same the other way around.
For example Gerber scored 8 of his 19 tries against South America Jaguars, a scratch touring who lost almost all their games but did scalp SA once when SA threw out kids and then managed to beat chile and Uruguay B once. That's nearly half his tries.
He played new Zealand 8 times and scored 3 times. There's an eye test to this and like wood you just have to give them credit for the time they were in but to go so strong as to say not fit to tie laces etc is just a bit silly.

Love the video! Gerber is in my all time XV for no.13, and that's considering all the great centres since his time. The 1986 Overseas VX (Should of been called the Southern Hemisphere XV) was one of the greatest teams I'd ever seen play. Remember watching the live telecast from GB in the wee morning hours in NZ (Part of the IRB Centenary Celebrations). If Botha had his boots on it would have been over 40 points scored (Final score 32-13). Awesome backline: 15-R.Gould(AU), 14-J.Kirwan(NZ), 13-D.Gerber(SA), 12-W.Taylor(NZ), 11-C.du Plessis(SA), 10-N.Botha(SA), 9-D.Loveridge(NZ) & a not too dusty forward pack: 8-S.Tuynman(AU), 7-S.Poidevin(AU), 6-M.Shaw(NZ), 5-A.Haden(NZ), 4-S.Cutler(AU), 3-F.van der Merwe(SA), 2-A.Dalton(c-NZ), 1-T.Rodriguez(AU). Mean back three & two no nonsense, hard, straight running centres. Good to see unfamiliar combinations working well together, imagine if they did a world tour! Thanks for this!

If available he was chosen every time for a Barbarian team, or a World 15. He overshadowed Sella in the IRB centenary game in 1986 at Twickenham. At 34 he was the best player on the field in SA's comeback game in 1992. Played international for 13 years ! Name any other outside centre with a try scoring ratio close to his....

I'm 65 so absolutely hail Danie Gerber as brilliant maybe Goat given lack of real competition. For the moment I am a Huge fan of Lukhanyou AM. His leadership qualities (running into the maul and pulling players on side) and skill is inspiring.

Are you trying to compare Am with Gerber? That's a big LOLZ. Danie played against NZ, England, France, Ireland, Scotland, etc.. And our provincial rugby was as good as test rugby back then. What lack of real competition are you talking about?
