Glad to see you back!! I may have to get this one. I just grabbed my FIRST ever Vinegar Syndrome 4K disc in my beloved The Beastmaster, so I’m so happy!!!
@@midlevelmedia Thanks man!! Just ordered my copy of Leviathan too! Watched it on HBO last night for the first time in years and was like “place order”!😂🤙🏻
Your new set is awesome! The addition of the screen behind you is a good touch and gives you the ability to draw attention to the subject of your video. The collection is nicely organized and makes an excellent background. I love the glowing Blu-ray blue lighting. It gives off a great atmosphere and is soothing to the eyes.
Hey Ken, missed you buddy. One of my all time favorite movies. Watched the 4K the night I received it and thought it looked and sounded fantastic! Great job on the review.
My wife and I watched it for the first time before it left Max so I could decide whether I wanted to but the 4K. I really loved it too, the cast really does elevate it. I think I am going to wait it out though, I have a feeling that when Kino rolls out the spring sale this will be on it.
Welcome back Ken. Leviathan is a good film but The Abyss is on a whole different level! The Abyss is an AMAZING film especially the extended edition! My most anticipated release of the year!
About Leviathan, the Italian house that has the original camera negative wouldn't allow them access to do a scan. Neither them nor MGM could get access. Instead they went with a scan of the Interpositive.
Welcome back from your re-organization break, Ken. I like the new layout of your media room. The TV on in the background is a welcome touch. Good to see that Kino Lorber continues to spare every expense when it comes to special features. It’s a good thing they’re able to use or license special features other companies have done or there’d be zero features. (I have noticed that when a film did not have special features already available, they often just release a bare bones version at the same price.) Looking forward to the Physical Media Report on Monday!
Love the review buddy. Have to pick this up. Was fortunate to catch all 3 underwater movies in the theater in 89 and loved all 3 (this one, Deepstar 6 and The Abyss)
Liking the new camera and set up with the movie menu on the tv. Looks good. I haven't heard of Leviathan before but sounds interesting, possible future sale pickup.
Great review of a great disc! I agree, this is easily of the better interpositive 4K scans that I’ve seen!! And I love the new setup with the TV in the back, Ken! Excellent idea! For me, the 5.1 sounded muffled on the dialogue, almost like the center channel had some issues outputting the dialogue audio at full power. But maybe it’s just me🤷🏻♂️ Also the other weird thing: my copy (preordered from Amazon) came last week with the 4K slipcover and the 4K disc + the Blu-ray disc inside, as expected… but with the *blu-ray* insert! Weird! Was still reversible, and the only real difference is the product number and lack of “4K/Dolby Vision” logos, etc. so no big deal really, but just something others may want to check their copies for! 😅
I have this on Scream Factory bluray. It's cool but I'll probably just stick with what I have. The background looks great, and the movie menu in the background is a nice touch.
@@muthascorpio I love Underwater more than I should. I went in blind on it and was not disappointed. Maybe the best unofficial Lovecraft story I have seen, and I wish they would make a prequel about Tian Industries.
hey Ken, the new phone video quality is visibly better! also liking the improved blue glow of the lighting in the background... If I'm not mistaken, that Samsung TV is an old plasma, so just be careful of burning in the bluray menu by leaving it on for too long ;)
Ken, I saw this one and The Abyss in the theater back in 1989. You are going to love The Abyss. James Cameron did a stellar job on it and the effects were groundbreaking at the time. This is 2 years before T2. Looking forward to my copy of Leviathan in 4K!
Another great review and yes - WELCOME BACK brother! Hope you enjoyed the break! I do LOVE the new looking setup! What kind of lighting do you use? That blue looks so good! I’ve been trying to get mine right but am curious which type of LED strip or brand you’re using. Let me know if you can….😉👍🏼 FYI - I do have this one on pre-order so excited to get it.
Hey Ken, glad to see your better! Did you see that the new Creepshow Steelbook added Dolby Atmos and alot of the special features are now on the 4k disc instead of all on the blu-ray like the original 4k release.
Welcome back! The TV is definitely a nice touch, and it's something I use in my videos as well. I still need to upgrade my phone though, haha. iPhone or Android?
Every single Kino Lorber disc i get comes with discs loose. Can they get it together. Some discs I don’t want to open or get an extra copy. These companies that keep doing the same mistakes 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻
A few of the KL movies I've gotten recently have had at least 1 disc loose in the case before I opened it. Seems that the cases they are using don't have very good disc hubs and they probably need to be thicker.
I thought I was the only one! 😅 And of course it always seems to be the 4K disc that ends up being loose, too; couldn’t have been the scratch resistant blu-ray! Gotta be the scratch-*sensitive* 4K 😂🤷🏻♂️
@@burninator1983 yes most kino discs have 2 inside and on opposite sides but for some reason they line up perfectly the press the center disc buttons and along with shrinkwrap on outside squeezing it all together from top and bottom, they pop loose so easily. Ordered 4 from Amazon and all loose discs. Kino is even worse ordering directly. Seems like a very simple fix but I’m sure they don’t want to spend the money to help us out
I remember seeing this underwater movie years ago and I forgot about it and don't remember that much about this movie so I actually need to rewatch this definitely in 4k 👊👊📽
Background looks great! This was a movie I loved as a kid but as an adult I feel like some of the ending falls apart a bit, and they did Ernie Hudson dirty!
Your tastes seem to lean more towards horror and gore and that's probably why you enjoyed Leviathan as much as you did (and probably for the same reason once you watch Deepstar Six). The Abyss is different, but I don't want to spoil it for you.
I do at times certainly. I’m definitely more forgiving of movies in that genre. I love a good thinking mans sci-fi as well though, so hopefully I will enjoy Abyss.
SPHERE ON 4K would be nice- Sam Jackson or is it Laurence Fishburn? Underwater with Kristen Stewart would look nice in 4K- Ordered K19 Widowmaker - Sub movie with Harrison Ford- Also ordered Once Opon a Time in the West Waiting for Tombstone- Come on Kino- Lorber
The Abyss is great and probably the best “movie” of the underwater genre, but it is not a horror movie like Leviathan or Deepstar 6. The Abyss is more of an underwater mystery/adventure/drama… but do not go into it looking for a horror movie because it is not that.
True, but it looked better in 1080p. The close-ups on the back of the slip cover were crystal clear. I don't remember the older camera focusing as quickly or clearly.
@@midlevelmedia iPhone? As I also have this set to 4K yet it uploads on TH-cam as 1080p like your video. Nevertheless a great video and looks great on my 77” Oled.
30 minutes into this movie, and it looks like they spent most of their budget on the sets and suits. The Cob conceptual design has its charm. However, the acting is atrocious, most likely down to a pretty crap script. The cast is struggling to forge any chemistry. It’s clearly an Alien/Abyss refudge. Both this and the Abyss came out the same year, but looks like one was made for tv. Just watching it out of curiosity now for humor. Nice transfer though.
About the packaging, I don't like the "4K" branding at the top. Leviathan is 10x better, The Abyss is okay but more of a chick flick. Deep Star Six is great and Sphere (1998) is a really good underrated, underwater, sci-fi flick.
# LEVIATHAN: PERFECT EXAMPLE how a new 4K release of an old movie should be handled in aspects of vertical squeeze correction plus NOT cropping the sides. Here it is even better and the framing shows more picture-information on all four sides so the vision of the director and cinematograph was handled with respect ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤍 Sadly a really rare thing on KL-Releases. Hopefully they care more about this on future releases.
Glad to see you back!! I may have to get this one. I just grabbed my FIRST ever Vinegar Syndrome 4K disc in my beloved The Beastmaster, so I’m so happy!!!

Wonder why they did that unless they plan to do one themselves. Turf wars like that truly blow.
Very strange they would hold out like that.

The Abyss is great and probably the best “movie” of the underwater genre, but it is not a horror movie like Leviathan or Deepstar 6. The Abyss is more of an underwater mystery/adventure/drama… but do not go into it looking for a horror movie because it is not that.
