    The amount of people with ADHD (myself included) that have commented something along the lines of them having a longer attention span than that of the average TikTok user is very alarming. Many people don't realise the treasure that is their attention span and capability of living and thriving without a constant stream of extra dopamine into their brain. It's really sad.

      ADHD doesnt mean thay you have a bellow average attention-span, it mostly means that you can't control it completly (thus why you have the "hyper focus " state for adhd people where you are too focused on something to the point where you'll even forget basic necessities such as eating sleeping etc )

    • @trancandy1
      @trancandy1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i have autism, which is a slightly different situation, but i need a happy medium of stimulation. i'm more prone to understimulation and boredom, and paradoxically, that actually causes me to hyperfocus on the sound around me and become overstimulated as a result. something i noticed with high tiktok use is that i would find myself getting bored of the audiobooks i listen to while working, and that was my sign to scale back my use of the app. now i essentially just watch it with my girlfriend before we go to bed and i just jumped ship on twitter as well. seeing some positive results, i like to listen to youtube videos while playing roguelikes, and when i pause it to use the bathroom, sometimes i'll find myself forgetting that the video was there in the first place when i get back and just enjoying the game without the background noise. the damage that high amounts of short form content causes is definitely reversible if you have a bit of temperance.

    • @L.V.K.-Studio
      @L.V.K.-Studio ปีที่แล้ว

      As someone in the comments said ADD (or what they said ADHD) is not about below average attention span, it's actually just not being able to control it completely, I myself have ADD and I couldn't agree more
      I've watched a more then half an hour essay of why Hello Neighbor is awfully, all 4 chapters of Vincent The Secret of Myers (which is an indie game that absolutely amazing you should check it), all the comics in Bendy and Boris The Quest for the Ink Machine, a 3 hour long animation for pokemon red, all the episodes of the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared TV show, a half an hour creepypasta, and so much more. To say that these hooked me is an understatement, I was entranced, not one second of these are dull, wouldn't pause or put it down til it finished, and I couldn't feel more entertained and in some cases wanting more.
      But for TH-cam Shorts or Tiktok, it's rather I get hooked for abit and then the boredom of scrolling down mindlessly sets in early, in which I just put it down to avoid getting addicted. Or I do get addictted to it and watch hours of it then the boredom finally kicks in which I realize how much of my day it took, when that happens, I end up feeling like I just wasted my time for hours just for some fun that will completely disappear once I put down the phone and I even forget what I even what shorts i watched, so I just feel mindless and unsatisified.

Even an internet friend I knew for few years submitted to it and when we would meet once in a while she'd mainly talk to me about TikTok videos and if I saw this and that... And like, I had nothing to say back to her. Just nodding and fake chuckling when she decided to show me... I never liked short content and would rather listen to something long in the background while I'm doing something else, it doesn't even need to be meaningful, I just like having background noise.

    This was kind of the reason I decided to delete a lot of social media platforms I used to use at a daily basis.
    Although I personally never found it in myself to ever use TikTok (which I am better off not using anyway), I used to use Instagram a lot.
    After years of using it, I eventually came to the realization and started hating the fact that I was now just mindlessly scrolling through daily posts by people I follow, or random posts that popped up in my feed.
    Not only that, but at one point, I really cared about how much people viewed my posts and how many likes it got. I was searching for validation from followers, which was ultimately pointless because it’s not like that validation is long-term.
    I feel a lot more at peace just limiting myself to TH-cam to watch lengthy videos, and Discord to chat with close friends. And I have been finding plenty of new hobbies to spend my time doing rather than wasting my time away with pointless scrolling.
    Social media can really be damaging.

    TikTok and its Consequences: A Revolution Against the Tech System
    TikTok, as a product of the technological revolution in social media, has become a disaster for the human race. It has caused widespread psychological suffering, destabilized society, and subjecting human beings to indignities. In the third world, TikTok has inflicted physical suffering as well. Furthermore, TikTok's continued development will worsen the situation. It may lead to greater social disruption, psychological suffering, and increased physical suffering even in "advanced" countries. TikTok, as part of the industrial-technological system, may survive, but only at the cost of permanently reducing human beings and many other living organisms to engineered products and mere cogs in the social media machine.
    If the system survives, there is no way of reforming or modifying TikTok so that it does not deprive people of dignity and autonomy. If TikTok's industrial-technological basis is not overturned, it will continue to inflict severe damage on the natural world, subject human beings to indignities, and destabilize society.
    Therefore, a revolution against the industrial system is necessary. This revolution may or may not make use of violence; it may be sudden or it may be a relatively gradual process spanning a few years. The object of this revolution will be to overthrow the economic and technological basis of the present society, not the government. In this article, we give attention to only some of the negative developments that have grown out of the tech system, specifically, the negative consequences of TikTok, which have received insufficient public attention or in which we have something new to say.
    For example, since there are well-developed movements to address social media addiction and the negative effects of social media on mental health, we have written very little about these topics, even though we consider these to be highly important. Our focus is on the wider implications of TikTok as part of the industrial-technological system and the need for fundamental change. The consequences of not taking action against the industrial-technological system and TikTok will be disastrous for the human race and the natural world. It is time to take action against the tech system and its negative consequences, or it will continue to make life unfulfilling and subject human beings to indignities that can't be ignored any longer.

      **spoilers**
      After the vault dweller finds the water chip, he logs his recordings of the wasteland to the overseer. When the overseer views the recording, he gets worried as someone is making mutants and could result in the vault being attacked. The vault dweller gets sent out once again to kill the master and destroy the mutant military base. After months of mental anguish and watching his companions die, he returns to the vault only to be exiled by the overseer out of fear that everyone in the vault would emulate the vault dweller. This is from the point of view from me, a autistic person (I have only seen tik-tok from my friends I have never used it by myself). Short form content can be very overstimulating, A lot of it is very loud and when there are multiple things on screen like mobile gameplay or some ASMR shit I can only focus on one, The actual video or the gameplay. Not to mention while my friends scroll the first few seconds can be very loud so that ends up being overstimulating too. I just don't really understand how people keep using tik-tok because its easy for me to see when something is trying to grab my attention and I always wonder how do people not notice this is grabbing their attention.

    My little Sister started using tiktok some time ago, and holy shit did I notice the lack of attention to anything. We both used to enjoy Zelda BOTW together, and while she struggled on some Dungeons back then, she always ended up beating them. She played around 5 Minutes of Zelda TOTK and said it was boring because nothing was happening, which truly blew my Mind. The Zelda games are designed around exploration and all that stuff, not constant Screen flashes that stimulate your Brain or something.
    Really made me sad how the Internet can mess up developing Brains, if used incorrectly. Now I can barely have a meaningful Conversation with her, without her pulling her Phone out to go on tiktok... She basically lost the Ability to finish basic things, such as making Food etc.
    My Mom stopped allowing her to have tiktok downloaded for a few Months because of that, and I actually saw a bit of improvement in that time, but after they had a Conversation about it (I have no Idea what my Sister told my Mom) she now is allowed to use tiktok again for some Reason. I can barely handle even watching what she is doing without feeling frustrated.
    It kinda feels like a Drug, that gets worse the more you use it, but gets better if you stop using it. Problem is, its still addictive and makes you think you need it. I am glad that I realized how bad tiktok is for younger people, and that I never really used it to get addicted to it.

    This is exactly why I tend to watch videos that are 30min-1hr (with substantial value, like a documentary, in depth tutorial, or comedy for example)
    I used to like shorter videos, but I noticed that my attention span was getting shorter, so now I only ever watch shorter videos for background music while I study or if it HAPPENS to be something interesting.
    TL;DR: I noticed my attention span began to lower the more short videos I watched.
    so if you want to increase your attention span while still enjoying watching content, then watch longer videos that are 25min at minimum

      your shorts algorithm is likely more attuned to your interests. you have to go actively searching when you download tiktok to curate your for you page, while youtube shorts takes cues from the non-shorts videos you watch.

    I really got into TikTok when it was at its heyday back in 2017 and got so addicted to it to the point where I made my own TikToks. Most of the stuff was really making fun of most trends besides the okay sign being lowered to your leg “the gottem meme”. My dad knew it was a problem and decided to delete the app on my phone. Unfortunately my mum and dad downloaded TikTok on their phones, but most of the videos were mainly about A.I. bs and videos about data analytics. They tried to prove to me that TikTok isn’t as bad as they seem because all because there are some bad apples, doesn’t mean there aren’t any tasty ones in the tree.
    But my problem wasn’t the stupid trends but the spam of our attention. I was no stranger to doing two things at the same time, like watching The Misadventures of Flapjack while playing on my PS2. But I kinda noticed a drop in my attention span and ended up watching shorts for hours and hours one end to the point where it was unhealthy and wasted a lot of valuable time.
    I managed to escape the pipeline but unfortunately keep coming back.
    That’s why I watch more normal length or even extremely long length content to increase my attention span.
    It also makes me worried for our generation or even our society as a whole to the point where Idiocracy might end up aging like wine, which is one of the few things you do not want to really age well.
    I’m just glad TikTok is getting banned and maybe even our reel or short content off of the various platforms we use everyday (except for Facebook though).
    I will feel sad for the content creators that got their subscribers through it, but I think it’s for the best to sacrifice for the greater good for our society.
    I just hope people realise this and start to increase our attention spans before our brains turned into mush.
    We humanity started this whole ordeal, and we’re the only ones to end it once and for all.
    Thank you for reading.

    hey i know this is an old video but i felt the need to post this comment. When you mentioned how you used to spend all your free time after finishing a school assignment watching yt shorts I remembered how I used to do exactly the same. I am now trying to completely quit yt shorts but despite my best efforts I still fall back into the loop of repeat watching that sludge content and I end up hating myself afterwards. Hearing how you used to do the same thing and how you have stopped has really motivated me to continue my journey to break free from shortform content. Thank you for this amazing video and I hope you continue to release great videos such as this one. Have a great day to you and anyone reading this

    TikTok is destroying our attention span. It's becoming harder to watch movies, to listen to longer songs, to be interested in anything. We have to stop the mindless scrolling somehow

    • @BLET_55artem55
      @BLET_55artem55 ปีที่แล้ว

      Newer movies are mostly garbage tbh, and wdym longer songs? There aren't much 6+ mins songs. And with 5min- I'll give you a life example: recently I've tried to listen to all "Survivor Band" songs, and like 78% of them were either too repetitive (like the same accord for 5:13), boring or just not the subgenre I like. But there also were some true hidden gems

    • @TheKichie
      @TheKichie ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BLET_55artem55 Maybe I articulated my point incorrectly! I didn't mean myself especifically, I think there's great movies coming out in the last few years (indie movies especially) and songs as well.
      I meant that TikTok has an impact on our society and the industry as a whole, especially the music industry. Songs are becoming shorter because that's what people keep looking for but personally, I love longer songs (Lift Your Skinny Fists is one of my favorite albums of all time). Don't want to self promote or anything but that's something I talked about in a video I made!
