Luciano Pavarotti's comment vis a vis Jussi is the highest praise one great singer can have for another. I wish I had seen Luciano live. I was fortunate to catch Bjoerling in opera with the Met in the 50's .

I was 12 years old when Jussi died. For me it was a sad day. His singing toucht my heart deeply. Every Christmas I listen when sings "A Holy Night" and the tears starts flowing down my face. He singing is a good example for a singing student. A long time has past but I never tire listening to Jussi. He was a good man and loved by us in Sweden.
I was also 12 years old when he died. What a sad day that must have been for his native country of Sweden! The man who can surpass Jussi Bjorling has yet to be born! What an amazing voice this gorgeous tenor had! ❤❤❤

If you mean he sings without all the sobs and cries of the Italian singers, well good! I am part Italian myself, but although in general I love Gili, his sometimes over enthusiastic use of emotion to put his feeling into interpretation get to me!
What a journey, from the irrepressible energy of his early recordings (and he was SO young!) to the incredible breath control and musical maturity of his later years (which were not very "late", he was only 49 when he died). His very last recorded concerts contain some of his best recordings and started exploring repertoire I would have loved to see more of, had he been given the time, like the Lohengrin and Onegin arias.

Up to now, I have thought of Björling "only" as the greatest lyric tenor who ever lived, and found his rendition of anything by Puccini as being the greatest that ever was. But...that "Nessun Dorma" at 19:30! STUPENDOUS!!! He was a master at EVERYTHING!
I think a comment here sums it all up. I never get tired of hearing Bjorling sing. He and Brownlee are in a class all by themselves! Thought after decades I would never hear anyone with Jussi's perfect "sound", voice, and subtle interpretations. And man, did I search. Yet, Bjorling stands alone! When Pavarotti was asked to compare himself to Bjorling he summoned it up by saying, "I'm only human."

Italy has contributed so much to the improvement of the human spirit. It's such a rich culture and civilisation. It's sometimes so profound, sometimes so contradictory, but always rich, always inspiring. It has a Dionysiac and an Apollonian spirit about it, and quite frequently it's hard to make a clear-cut distinction. Jussi Bjorling was not Italian, but he sings Italian songs in the Italian language or dialects. It'd be meaningless if he sang them in English or in any other language. That so telling, so revealing, and so beautiful. And praise the Lord, I am married to an Italian woman. My love to you, my sweet Alessia.
