- Harley Benton TE-70 Black Paisley - Review / Test by Have Guitar!
Sorry for nagging but please support Have guitar by subscribing so I can stay in TH-cams partnership program; I need 1000 subs and your sub counts! Thanks in advance!!
Time for new review from Have Guitar! - in this video it's a guitar from Thomanns low cost brand, the Harley Benton TE-70 Black Paisley! It's a telecaster style guitar that can be yours for under 150 euros (or 160 US dollars)!! Can a low budget guitar like this have a place in your guitar collection?! Watch this review of the Black Paisley to find out...
This tele-model from Harley Benton comes in the style of Brad Paisley's Fender Telecaster, hardware and pickups from Wilkinson and strings from Daddario (EXL). In the video I'll give my impressions of it and of course you will get sound examples as well, from clean to raw distortion.
PS. Just noticed this morning - over 150 sub's! It's a small number on TH-cam but never the less fantastic to me! Thanks all of you who have subscribed, you're the best! :) And don't forget - Fret Nut... Have Guitar!
Index:

And remember - play hard and keep on rockin'!

(turn that into a regular email adress ... did this to avoid spam!)
I got this same guitar last week, and I can't stop playing it. The Pandemic has seen me, a former Brand Snob, buying Grote, Glarry, Xavierre, and Harley Benton. Honestly, they all make some fine instruments. Take a look at the Grote 335 type. Amazing.
Yeah, its fun guitar, I still play mine regularly... Its not like a $3000 guitar but great for the price!
Love the videos. I watch them all. This one is darker than others. Brighten up the videos especially a demo with a guitar. Take care and blessings to you.
Thanks so much!! I know but I don't know why this became darker... and to add to it, this is the 2:nd version - recorded this AND a rig showcase only realize that the auto-focus was off. All photage was just a blur... doh! So, next one will be brighter - don't have access to real studio lights though so I take what I have. Thanks for your support and all the comments, very much appriciated!
Great, honest review as usual
While you actually can polish a turd, as Mythbusters proved, I don't... unless someone pays me an obscene amount of money. Anyone? Just joking. Thanks for the comment, allways good with feedback! Cheers!!
I'm surprised that phrase translates well into swedish :-) Look forward to next weeks episode.
Update: fixed the bridge pickup and guess what? It sounds great! High output gives a raw sound and it works sweet with higain profiles as well. And the proness for feedback... well, you'll have to wait n see in the upcoming video. 😎🤘
Update: changed the pickups today, been trying to find gold tuners but none in stock right now. well so the neck pickup was fine but no sound in the bridge pup so I did something wrong there.. think I know what and will try to fix it tonite. Then a new video wont be far away! 😎
The change in tone with lower volume has nothing to do with the pots... it's resistance loading the pickups.. this will happen with every singlecoil guitar...especially. That's why many do treble bleed mods...
Thanks for the info! Obviously I did not know that, then again I haven't owned many SC guitars....
Seems to be worried about electronics breaking down before it happens. Harleys come with a 3 year warranty, so I say go for it! I bought this model and I play it a lot more than my Fender pro strat. LOVE THAT TWANG! Only things I did was :rolling string tree, graphite nut and GFS locking tuners. Stays in tune perfect now, for less than $50.00 U.S. Great guitar!
Yep, still happy with this guitar and mine stays fine in tune even without modifications! Thanks for your comment!!
Good review!
650Thunderbird Thanks!
Great review.
Perth Guitar Thank you!
Wilkinson bridge will last a life time. No need to change. The tuners get some nice Gotoh or Kluson same quality as Gotoh. Enjoy your project to make yourself a keeper !!
I can't help wondering ... that renowned brand "Wilkinson" that everyone is praising, is it really their high quality products being mounted on the HB guitars? I mean, the guitar costs less than pickup set and around the same as a hiEnd set of tuners... I don't know myself, just tossin' out the question as bait. :) Thanks, Malcolm!
I guess if you buy them in bulk 1000s at a time. Then they will be cheap. New price for one of these bridges cost less than 25 euro anyway. I think it would look good with black hardware. Like a black Wilkinson bridge with the brass saddles looks sexy as hell. Some black tuners. Brass nut Would look so cool !! Enjoy your guitar man !!
Thanks, I will... or I am actually! :)
great review.!!! Thanks.
Don't think its worth replacing tuners unless they're not working properly. It's a pretty simple thing tuners.
Thank you! No replacing them would be mainly for the fun of pimping the guitar, but the tuners still hold the tuning really good. A bit awkward to tune but then its working fine. :)
Yeah, sometimes the nut can be an issue. Lubricating the nut can help. Thanks again. Look forward to more reviews.
RealJusticeWarrior I should have expressed myself better, dont mean the guitar goes out of tune due to the tuners... the tuners are a bit odd and quirky. Indistinct might be the word but works as said. 🤣
Hello! are you still lucky with that guitar or is there any work to do with it? is it possible to wear 009-42 strings? btw: i cant decide between the squire tele and this one...im interested in your oppinion..thank you and greetz from northern europe :-)
Hiya! Sorry for a late reply but it was stuck as spam until I just noticed it... Yep, I'm pretty happy with this one. That is said considering it's a cheap guitar, I'm sure it can't compete with a $2000+ axe. And maybe the parts won't last as long (like the nut and frets etc). Still, I have a good experience everytime I pick it up - it's not playing as easy as my Gibson SG or my ESP Phoenix but those are in another price range. Reg Tele or Strat, I picked the Tele partly as I already have a Strat and I'm not too fond of guitars with tremolo... Thomann has a 30 day return guarantee so I guess you can order one and send it back if it doesn't suit you! And, I should stress that for me, the playability and sound was really improved by switching to the Fender Texas Specials, there's a video where I compare before and after if you wanna check that out. Hope that helps, and good luck with your decision!
thanks for comment :-)
You must be Svensk ;) Thanks for the review
Che Guebuddha of course I'm svensk, my accent is what it is 👍😆 Thanks for kommentaren! 😊
Well I lived in Malmo for 8 years :) I will try and guess where exactly you are from .... let me hear again ... somewhere in Skåne ... maybe North of Skåne ...
Che Guebuddha I live about 70 km north of Skåne, so that was a good guess! 👍 in less than month I'm actually going to Malmö for a tattoo session. How come you lived there, studies?
Long story ... a woman was involved ... you dont wanna know :D
Need some lights my friend! x
So true and nowadays I have! 😎🤘
Always add the case when u buy it coz it will cost u $11 for a very nice high premium gig bag...i love harley 4 the price of high quality guitar but not there pickups amp thats why i install a prewired fender pickup amp and fender locking tuner and locking tuner on all there product and make that stock tuner obsolete..still a very low price total compare to a fender guitar...i hope someday harley will put up a high end amps for option and name it harley premium
are you going to do a update on this video
I have; th-cam.com/video/OPZnTeuS4ZQ/w-d-xo.html - the HB updated with the Fender Texas Specials. As for the rest, after playing quite a lot I've decided the original hardware does not need an immidiate upgrade, the tuners for example is working really good.
dude when you took the scratch guard of was the paisley a vinyl sticker
Do mean if the guitar was vinyl sticker? :D Or if the pattern is a vinyl sticker? I suppose you mean the pattern and I'm pretty sure it's printed and glues on to the guitar and then coated. That's how Fender does it from what I've heard so I'm pretty sure HB does that too.
Did you expect living, breathing paisleys under there? 😁
@leafbelly you know that was 7 years ago right not into guitars
@@bassa69 Well, I hope it's been a good 7 years, brother. Take care.
Why not just buy a Fender!! These are excellent guitars from HB. Yes, they cannot be compared to high end guitars, but compared to guitars under €1000 these are pretty damn good even without changing any parts. You've never heard of WIlkinson??
The reason I didn't buy a Fender was more than one: first the price, it's a very affordable guitar that actually have the looks as well. Secondly I wanted a guitar that I can "experiment" with. Or rather - getting better at setup etc without breaking a sweat due to the price of the guitar. As for Wilkinson; I don't know if there's like a high and low end parts of the same brand? I heard some good rep about the brand but for these guitars I'd say it's OK but something that probably will have to be replaced at some time. Thanks for your comment!
Wilkinson is one the premier pickup designers of the last 30 years. He designs hardware for Vintage guitars who make one of the best Les Paul copys on the market ( a Peter Green copy). Try the HB TE-30 in ash, this is an amzing guitar for €89, I have one and you cannot go wrong for the money. Thanks for your reply.
You seem to have preconceived ideas about what you think you need to change before you even opened the box.....which makes this review pretty much a waste of time. If you're not going to be open minded, then there's no point posting this 'review'
Well, that was not really how it was but I didnt expect a guitar in this price range to have the best hardware or pups and in that aspect Id say I was right. I dont think anyone can approach something with a totally blank mind unless the handover is a complete surprise... Thanks for commenting!
so you want to replace almost everything, why not replace the body as well? the neck is great imho. nice review.
bbaasje because I like the body 😎 but I think the tuners and the pickups goes a long way to make a lowcost guitar a little better... thanks for the comment!
I liked your input about adding gold parts. Really looking forward seeing that on the guitar! I think that will really enhance the look of the guitar
Thanks, yeah I think so to... just found out the tuners measurement are a bit odd, doesn't even match with Harley B's own sparepart, so I will probably need to widen the holes in the head of the guitar, argh! :) On the other hand, this is also kinda why I got this cheap guitar - to learn more about customizing a guitar. Thanks for the comment again!
he likes the body it's just the rest he hates
bbaasje 😆 I dont hate anything... its really fine as it is but Im pretty sure some parts will need to be replaced as they're worn out... 👍
The fight you describe between guitar brands seems to be due to scale length. 24.75 or 25.5 as an example.
Now that's a very fesible suggestion, that might very well be the case! Thanks! :)
I've bought cheaper guitars and modded them and ended up paying as much as if I would have bought the more expensive guitar. If you need to mod it this much, it seems to me that it would be a waste to do anything else. Better to return it. BTW, Wilkinson makes great bridges and pick-ups. They make the best tremolo systems bar none. I know, I have a higher end guitar with a Wilkinson bridge and trem system and it's the best!
It's not that much needed as it is now. For me the pickups was the main issue, and so far I haven't changed anything more than that. What I do suspect is that some of the parts might not last as long as on a higher quality guitar. Kinda wanted to test out the Harley Benton brand and get a guitar that I can experiment on without worrying about the cost. That and the fact that it's quite a long qay to the price of real Fender Paisley Tele... and just saying - I know by now that Wilkinson is considered a good brand but the original pups was just not for me. Thanks for taking your time to comment!
Haveaguitar: I just ordered one of these, but I'm in the states so it hasn't arrived yet. Are you saying that the hardware is poor? I had heard so many good things about this brand which is why I ordered it.
Elio Lopez Well, this what I've been thinking and that is; they are saving in on the money and maybe the hardware is not as good as in a more high end guitar. As it comes for the price its good, a lot better than the cheap guitars me and my friends could afford back when we started playing! I've had 2 problems so far... 1. One if the strap pins just fell out with the screw. Easy sorted with a slighty wider screw. 2. Got some fret buzz recently, I hope its an easy fix but havent had time to check it out yet.
So, I dont expect a 200 dollar guitar (incl the parts) to be as good as a 2000 dollar guitar, that was what I meant. Still with the Texas specials on this tele, Im as happy playing this one as any of my others. Hope that explains more on how I'm seeing this. And I hope you will be happy with yours! 👍🎸🤘
Haveaguitar: Thanks for the detailed response. I will look for those issues when I get the one I ordered. None of the reviews I saw said anything about these things. I have bought less expensive guitars that I left alone, (a squier tele 52 re-issue). Everything worked fine, except the output jack was loose so that was an easy fix. The most I've ever had to fix on cheaper guitars was this and replacing a pick-up selector on a Jay Turser, that's it. So this is rather worrisome and I will hold back from buying more until I see this up close. Thanks for letting me know. No one else I've seen has been that thorough.
Elio Lopez You're welcome. Been thinking I should do a followup to the review but just hasnt come around to it. Gonna check up that buzz fret now and make sure I do!
hey i dont think this guitar is made for high gain and heavy metal its is for soft rock and country style :)
Adriyan Slavchev You're probably right but with the new pickups it handles high gain quite well, but not metal... 🤓 Thanks for the comment!
Okay man please tell me about the neck is it lacquered ?
Adriyan Slavchev Yes it is... but I guess if you dont like that you could remove it. no sweat considering the price of the guitar. 😉
oh sorry i mean fretboard :(
Adriyan Slavchev yes that as well
hi what weight is it in kgs thanks
Hi, the weight isn't listed but my SG weights around 1.9 - 2 kgs and this tele is about the same, might be slighty more but anyways its kinda light. :)
why was it B stock?
According to Thomann, B stock is returned by a customer or replaced by guarantee. Still you have 30 days of return rights and 3 years warranty on the item.
Skåning ellårrrrr? :-)
Aldrig i livet! Småland all the way! ;)
Haha ok! :-)
So what's the point of buying a budget guitar if you're just going to change the pots, the pickups, the bridge, the neck and the tuners. ... You pretty much just built yourself another guitar!
🤣
Sounds like this is to be avoided.
The point is not much more than have fun and try out stuff 😎👍
Seriously tried to find you on Facebook and I can't find ya. My FB page is Rock B Mark
Mark, try this link: facebook.com/fretnothaveguitar/ (That should work!)
great review shame the only thing you would keep is just the body
Barry Perry Well, for now I'm keeping most of it. its a very descent guitar after the pickup switch!
lol..wilkinson bridge are gread...pickups are so so..but they are about 50$ each on ebay....
Def' worth selling then, if someone gives me 50 bucks for those picks I would be surprised! ;)
you probably paid SD pickups more than guitar ...and how many people would hear the difference and know which one is which....I have few guitars with SD and EMG pickups..but for clean tone I still mainly play telecaster with those pickups...there is no huge difference, unless you are a professional and tone geek...which I am the second one ;) they are not that bad...its not meant to play trash metal with it...
Zvonimir Sarcevic well as long as I hear the difference, I'm happy. and yeah, its kinda crazy to get pickups worth more than the guitar... but then again, I never was the average guy. Thanks for your comments!!
have you tried any hand wound pickups...I met 2 guys that changed Tex Mex pickups from this guy in Croatia. You can tell him what kind of sound you would like, and if you dont like it, you can return it www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xhand+wound+pickups.TRS0&_nkw=hand+wound+pickups&_sacat=0
Zvonimir Sarcevic No, haven't tried that ... yet. would be really cool to try though! I'll save that link for future possible use, thanks. Been thinking about getting a custom guitar and been looking at Lundgren pickups. While they are not customizable in that way they are hand wounded... ultimate config would be a humbucker in bridge and a p90 at the neck... 🤠
Video not very good focus.
Yes, I know... lack of good lights and sorry for that. I have gotten some studio lights after this so the newer videos are better in that aspect. :)
