Jay still can't wrap his mind around the fact that bands from back in the day weren't stuck in a box playing 1 sound of music like today. These are real musicians who can play any type of song.

Back in the days of ol'..talent and versatility was required by ALL Artists.
      Fans counted on that.
Not everyone was qualified to get noticed and signed to a Record Label.
Musicians had to understand how to play at least one instrument..of some kind.
Vocal tracks.. were performed extensively until the right sound was achieved.
      No Auto-tuning

I think people doing reactions struggle to identify the Stones’ sound because they're constantly jumping around 30+ years of catalog. At their purest and best, the Stones were a rock and roll band heavily rooted in blues, country, soul, and gospel. They flirted with just about every musical trend, from psychedelia and baroque pop to reggae and funky disco. But at their core, they're a British band embodying cosmic American music.

Commented by someone who doesn’t have the drive to listen to the absolute cornucopia of newer artists that have albums and albums of varying genres. Old music was good, new music is good, your just gettin old bro this is one of the first signs. “tHey dOnt maKe muSic liKe tHey useD to” is the current year version of GET OFF MY LAWN. Discard the last part if you’re younger then you’re just “I was born in the wrong generation,” (which just means you have a bad music taste)

Another great country-rock-sounding song from the Stones: “Dead Flowers.” It’s a fun one; I think you’ll like it.
It may sound surprising to hear a British band be influenced by American country music, but all of those guys back then in England were listening to every kind of American music you can think of. In fact, it was bands like the stones that introduced blues and country music to “sheltered” American kids who had never heard that stuff before. A kid from suburban Chicago had to hear a blues song from a band from London even though blues was being played in places 20 miles from him.

Those of us who grew up with The Stones: If we heard this on the radio, we would instantly know it was The Stones in the first note! Classic Stones song! The Stones are so versatile; this song is a mix of Rock, Blues, Country and Folk, with heavy emphasis on the Rock. By the way, probably their most "Southern" or "Country" sounding song is "Far Away Eyes"; another Stones treat.

One of my fav Stones' songs, "Honky Tonk Women" was their 23rd chart hit, peaking @ #1 for 4 weeks in 1969 (it was their 5th #1 at that point). One of the best dance songs they ever did (that sleazy drum beat combined the swampy guitar & the cowbell slays). Guaranteed to get people dancing at a party.
Recommendation for next Stones song: "Brown Sugar" (1971) -- another classic dancer.

People didn;t notice becaue they were too busy scremaing at the concerts and accepting the Beatles as gods. To me the original country rock Southern or otherwsie has it's roots in Rockabilly of the 1950's, which was not even the term for it until someone put a label on it. But yes, the Rolling Stones did a good mix of that in their music for sure.

I'm glad you guys finally did that one. That rocky, slight bluesy sound, with a bit of "swing" in it, is a sound/feel Rolling Stones became known for, although their repertoire is quite diverse. Later bands like Georgia Satellites ("Keep your hands to yourself"), and Black Crowes ("Hard to handle"), not to mention, Aerosmith, JJ Giels Band, and many many others owe parts of their sound and attitude ("swagger") to the Rolling Stones.
It's been suggested that you react to Brown Sugar. I agree, but be warned the lyrics contain lines that might be considered inappropriate these days.

And "our" music it is . I don't care if it comes off sounding smug or silly -- the fact of the matter is that it is 100% true.
My entire teenage period was lived in the 70's.
When my music tastes forever changed around 1970 from listening to my older brother playing Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc -- music that the rest of our family thought was weird , and even scary [ Black Sabbath , anyone ? ] -- my LIFE changed , also . Music wasn't just a pastime for me. It was another form of food . I never simply "heard" music -- I felt it ... I devoured it .
It fed me -- my hungry soul .
But anyway -- for those of us who were around when classic rock music was originally released -- we relish this fact .
We were lucky as heck . Blessed . Privileged .
Deal with it , you jealous non-70's semi-cool hipsters out there . 😏

"Miss You" is likely their biggest hit and one they should consider. "Bitch" is one of my favorites, and no it is not calling a person a bitch. It has those great horns that Jay and Amber like, along with being so upbeat. Yes, if they haven't done "Satisfaction" they have to do that one. That is one of the songs that made them popular and a really good song.

A couple things about this particular song. Firstly, it was recorded in Muscle Shoals Alabama where some of the best R&B was produced, so it has some of that delta blues feel to it. Also, listen carefully to the tempo of the song. It starts out real slow and bluesy and very gradually picks up speed as it goes along until it's really rocking by the time they finish. I don't think it's an accident that it happens this way, I think it's primarily the genius of Charlie Watts, one of the best rock drummers of all time. And the rest of the band comes right along with him. It's a great classic 70's rock song, glad you got to know it a bit!

I remember our family vacationing in Galveston during the summer of 1969. I was 12 years old. There was a little diner in front of our hotel that had a jukebox. My sister & I inserted a nickel and played "Honky Tonk Women", which was popular on the radio at the time. I'd suggest listening to "Gimme Shelter". Before you do that, though, check out the story behind its backup singer, Merry Clayton. Merry was called in the middle of the night to sing a particular backup vocal track. At one point in the song, you can hear her voice crack and then Mick yells "Wooo!". They kept it in the song.

  • @andymcgill354

The song is early stones and was originally blues and much slower.I remember Keith Richards saying they were staying at a remote place in the US and him and Mick were sitting outside chatting and recounting stories/experiences .They wrote a rough outline of the song but back in England at the recording studio it was changed to be more commercial. It was a blues song written on a ranch in the deep south. In the UK I think most people would recognise Jaggers voice on any record. That song came out in 69 so its over 50 years old.

Oh, this was huge from '69 - '70 and remains one of the top classic rock songs ever. I remember hearing this on the radio every monday night on the way to catechism class in my mom's car, and fairly certain she didn't get the lyrics. It's Country/Blues/Rock. Their whole Beggars Banquet album from '68 had a country/hill folk/delta blues vibe to it (PRODIGAL SON, DEAR DOCTOR, NO EXPECTATIONS, FACTORY GIRL, PARACHUTE WOMAN) and though it doesn't have this song on it (Honky Tonk Women was released as a single), it has Sympathy For The Devil, which was a big hit but didn't seem to go with the rest of the vibe of the album. It was their seventh LP and the last one featuring Brian Jones, who had started the band and was its front man, at first. RIP Brian.
