I was told a story many years ago about a man who had the salvage rights to an US freighter sunk in Darwin harbour by the Japanese during an air raid. Not long after the war he started salvaging new Chev trucks still packed in grease. The government stepped in with a receipt claiming ownership claiming ownership of said trucks. The Government is still paying for the storage of their trucks on his ship.
The salvage divers name was Carl Atkinson. He was a friend of my father. There were willys and Ford Jeeps partly disassembled packed in grease in crates, GMC and Chevy " Yankee Joe" trucks. Some were damaged when the ship was hit; but most were still intact and in excellent condition as they hadn't been down there all that long. When he finally got ready to land them, he was informed he will have to pay import duty on brand new vehicles.
@@johntaylor3889 Could very well be him, was his nic name slim? A well known engineer/oil rig/deep sea salvage diver named Bob told me the story. He said the government kept slim in the court system up until the late 1960's. Slim eventually conceding to government ownership of the trucks, he then charged them deck space on his ship. Slim mysteriously disappeared.
@@academyofnaturaljustice8939 The man's name was Carl Atkinson, after the war he became a deep sea salvage diver. I don't know much about him. He was friends with dad before I was born. I know he salvaged a lot of trucks and willys Jeeps packed disassembled in wooden crates from two liberty ships sunk off Darwin. Dad said that when he finally got them out of the wrecks and landed them in Darwin, customs slapped him with import duty on new vehicles. He never thought of this; and nobody in authority bothered to tell him. From what I know, or what I think I know, he payed the import taxes on some of the Jeeps and trucks, and the Government seized the rest. What the Government did with them after that is anybody's guess.
It is really sad to watch.... These soldiers might went into war for protecting the colonial's interest. However, they were just following orders of the leader of their home country. They left their family back home, knowing that probably it could be their last time meeting them. And yet, they couldn't even have their final rest in peace. As an Indonesian, I'm so sorry that the corrupt government and polices in Indonesia failed to protect the historical site.... The local workers might not aware of the law or that they are protected sites, and at last the locals gave the remains a burial. But, for the polices to be ignorant about it and has a high chance of protecting the companies who did this.... I just hope that Indonesia can protect what remains of the shipwrecks from now on....
This goes deeper than local corrupt officials; government issued permits mean government is corrupt. Who is requesting uncontaminated metals? Who is driving the market? This will unearth Who is shielding the perps.
No way their wouldn't be tons of metallurgical forensic evidence of war ship metals - both on the ships involved and in the salvage yards. It's tough to face there are people of all countries and ethnicities that have zero morals or scruples when it comes to greed. I'm not blaming the poor local workers looking to support their families finding work; but I will blame the major sketchy conglomerates out there doing this terrible work. Follow the metal source trails for sensitive instruments from less than completely reliable companies.
There should be a continuation on this story. Just where did these thousands of tons of salvaged metal go? The salvage was tracked to Indonesia, but from there, where did it go? There is only one state actor with the secrecy, the deep pockets, the industry with which to utilize, and the unmitigated Gaul to perform this kind of action. This state actor has been building it's military, especially it's navy, at an unprecedented rate. Since it's easier to recycle these metals than to manufacture them from raw materials, there should be an investigation as to where all this metal has gone.
To buyers in the US and Europe of course, so no investigation will ever take place. They salavage it because it contains no radiation like all post 1945 metals.
I'm pretty sure I watched a documentary about gold being recovered from HMS Edinburgh, and human remains being recovered, so it seems that disturbing war graves is ok if money is involed
If you understand the full nature of the battle of the java sea, you understand that it was essentially a suicide mission, with very little chance of success. It was the only chance the allies had of holding Java though as most of the ground forces had been sent to either Australia or Burma and the air forces were barely present in the region. Holding Java by sea was the only hope they had. The task force that went into the battle had no experience in joint combat missions with one another. They didn't even speak the same languages, and didn't even have to correct radio sets to directly communicate with one another. Adding to this was the fact that the task force was inferior in size and firepower to the Japanese striking force. In other words, the chances of success was very slim. Despite this, they went into the battle knowing full well what the likely outcome was, in a remarkable show of heroism. They fought a remarkable fight, in which there were many shows of courage and bravery. HMS Electra (a destroyer) took on an entire enemy destroyer squadron (8 destroyers) by itself and dealt crippling damage. It was then destroyed under a hail of fire. The idea that these men's remains have been looted and in some cases destroyed is an absolute disgrace. Just a small point, but It was claimed in the video that 8 battleships were sunk. No battleships were ever present in the battle. It was a collection of Destroyers, Light Cruisers and Heavy Cruisers. It should also be added that Prince of Wales was not a battlecruiser as stated. But the looting of them is truly evil.

Modern wrecks have also been recovered. The costs involved in some of these huge crane barges do not justify the value of the scrap. I personally believe it is srategic, sponsored by the Chinese military, to clear the oceans for their submarine, and and surveilance activities.
This is an interesting comment. I agree, that it seems the cost hardly justifies the return! I mean, there are piles of scrap metal all over the world, why bother to go to all this expense, for more? I don't understand, but your comment has me thinking in a different way. Thank you.
How much pre nuclear steel do they need? 500,000 tons for medical instruments. In Indonesia the scrap goes to Krakatoa steel mills, to be melted down for all sorts of steel products. They are not interested in pre- nuk stuff. Sculls and femurs can last a long time in the silt inside the wrecks. I first started reporting this type of salvage many years ago. Local Malaysian authorities were not interested, possibly paid off. Some of thr smaller barges may have recovered the steel for scrap, but the later very large barges would have been very costly to operate. These wrecks were also great fish nurseries, and provided local fishermen with an income. Now the sea bottom is more like a desert. I have seen it all first hand, happening for more than 10 years. Warships remain the property of the flag country, not the local government. 5 years ago when we found the Java Sea warships gone, it became very political. I heard that the Dutch prime minister was told by Widodo that Indonesia was not liable to protect these wrecks. Surely Indonesian navy and marine police would have known about these recoveries happening under their noses. At one time Tommy Suharto was Top dog, when issuing salvage licenses to historic wreck searchers... This I also know from experience. Maybe still is? Tommy also had his own salvage company recovering from ww2 vessels fleeing Singapore sunk by Japanese.. Civilians carrying personal valuables and maybe British gov valuables. This not documented, but I spoke to crew on Tommy's salvage barges, who told me about this.
The American , British & Dutch Navies should have Buoys Placed there and at least weekly Satellite survalaince and if caught have the nearest capable Ship send a Cruise Missile to meet them.
legislation will not change this, only intervention, with police and/or military. Some countries could easily monitor the wrecks by satellite (after all, they don't move) and examining any vessel that visits them. any big companies involved must be handed massive fines.
The government, police and military weren't interested in dealing with illegal salvage of ww2 shipwrecks. First, it was not their ships. Secondly, the WW2 ships were from former colonial masters. Why would they risk and spent time to investigate their colonial master's warships? And the big companies involved in this case were probably influential ones and had ties with the government, that's why they got off so easily.
The countries, owners of the ships, should rescue the bodies of the sailors and try to save what was possible from the wreckage, after the end of the conflicts. Abandoning everything in international waters or in other nations and demanding that they not be touched... is absurd. Not to mention the fact of fuel pollution and the danger of ammunition explosions.
What are these respective governments need to do? I might ask?. Spend millions of dollars of taxpayers money just to GUARD these ship wrecks that's not belonged to them even?.
Imagine the ppl living in that part of the world knowing there’s wealth they can harvest but the West says “no, leave all of our sunken ships alone so they can slowly rot away over time.”

Very sad goings on no doubt, I am not quite understanding the fact that the metal taken from the ships is not affected by "radiation" as surely, once it gets to the surface and is processed it will pick up that radiation possibly. Also, why if these ships are considered war graves, why was the Mary Rose in UK waters not considered a war grave, is there a timeframe for a ship that is or is not a war grave.
Some think they are war graves and shouldn't be touched. others think they are environmental threats and they should be removed. Often it is not the object itself that determines what it is.
The metal from these ships are worth a lot of money. I am sure the local governments maybe involved of keeping everything hush and not doing to much to stop it. It is a great source of income for the area.

I don't get why this matters.

Jangan2 peninggalan sejarah dilaut sengaja dirusak atau dikirim ke negara lain. Negara lain sangat2 pengen tau mengenai perang2 apalagi world war 2. Sementara diIndo acuh museum tdk butuh. Pdhl sngat bersejarah
I don't get why this matters. These are shipwrecks that are literally rusting and disappearing on their own in depths where nobody will see them, you can't preserver them and the ships are not a mystery as we know literally every single thing about how they were built etc. There is no heritage in the depths of the ocean.at least this way some part end up on the surface where they can actually be preserved and end up in some museum. But just leaving them there is just matter of time before they disintegrate.
Real talk
@Live the moment like it's your last I have plenty of respect. I am a vet myself. But i am not sentimental for weird things. There are no bodys there. They were eaten by sharks long ago and theri bones were eaten by something else. They are just shipwrecks. There are no ghosts wandering whats left of the decks. IF you really wan to preserve something..you..preserve it. you get it out of the water and in an environment where it will last forever. We call those museums.I'm more worried bout whatever reefs and natural biomes the explosives are tearing apart.BTW how bias are you on your respect because some of those wrecks belong to the German and Japanese. Sure you can call them the bad guys, but they were humans with family too. Or is that the line where your respect for heritage stops? Suppose another thousand years pass and those wrecks become..non existent on their own. Do you stop being sentimental at that point? do you blame the ocean for lost heritage? Don't worry nobodys sacrifice is forgotten, we put them all in our history books. I hope some of those thiefs end up selling some of the artifacts on the blackmarket..thats real preservation. The kind that eventually ends in a museum.
@Live the moment like it's your last they were war criminals, racists, colonialists. HELLO?
They were war graves. Are you ok with the graves of your family being ploughed over to make room for an office building?
@@roamin24 So Arlington should be ploughed over to make way for housing?
They call the Prince of Wales a battlecruiser, and the HNMLS Java a battleship. oof.
Blah, blah, blah.
I am a USA navy/army veteran [16 years) and i understand the outrage of this. I believe the bodies(bones) should be recovered and interned back on their home soil. The metal should be recycled. These ships also have many poisonous/dangerous items on it that should be cleaned up so it does not hurt wildlife ie asbestos, oil, Greece, fuel, explosives. If I died on a ship I would like to have my body buried on land that I called home and was fighting for.
Graves should not be disturbed. It is illegal under international law to mess with war graves.
@@tenkloosterherman Those are not graves but wrecks. Its like leaving behind fallen building and said those are graves. Its up to the government of these fallen soldiers/sailors to picked them up and buried them in a proper graves, thats the least they can do. Those wrecks are hazardous for the surrounding environment with unexploded ammunitions and fuel.
@@tenkloosterherman You are correct - you can see the real local attitude about graves in the comments here though - the level of hatred for foreigners is astounding. They also think that their wisdom is better than the traditions and decency of all parties from centuries - even millennia of wars.
@@tenkloosterherman ask your government to pay Indonesian to protect it,
But your government doesn't even care, and you blame Indonesian instead
SHOCKED AND DISGUISED ... BUT NOT surprised!!
Sadly it's an all to common thing to see these days around the world
The question is how many of these government people have there fingers in the pie??
laws are not enough to protect these sites. Enforcement is the key. Also countries who owns the ships should do more like give support to local countries where the wrecks are
Indonesian government have problems to feed their people let alone to support protecting the ww2 wrecks
Its too hard, the Indonesian Military is underfunded as hell, the current government is Liberal alligned and their concern mostly with infrastructure and Economic Progress.
They already do - they give hand over fist.
The only thing I hope is that in these wrecks that were reassembled and plundered, there were souls in pain, who seeing their tomb massacred to be resold at the weight of scrap metal, pursue them even in their sleep so that they end up mad or by committing suicide, caused by the curse that overwhelms them.
Everyone has their beliefs and everyone has their own experience, but I can assure you that when you desacralize a tomb, if the soul hasn't crossed, you're cooked, it's the curse for you , it's over for you and the people who were with you.
....these people are grave robbing ghouls and should be locked up for robbing the dead, you don't get to take things off the remains of men who died and act like you just randomly found them.....
It’s too much money to protect and too much money to leave alone.
I hope those who did this to all those shipwrecks gets properly and thoroughly punished. Thousands of Royal Navy, french, American and Japanese sailors should rest in peace within the hulls of their respective ships, not have it desecrated by greedy pocket fillers
Pirates should still be hanged.
I must agree with you.
China did it
someone needs to contact the British Embassy in this country- the Brits will not take kindly to disturbing the dead
The Dutch didn't either.
Your so called embassy are busy celebrating pride, 😂
Its incredible that its been left there so long. all of that steel, gold and copper just waiting to be recycled.
You should be speaking Japanese, and your culture should be Japanese. The Japanese were the ones fought by the men in these graves.
not a warship but I really hope somebody checks out the wreck of the Tampomas II at some point...with the warships in deep water being illegally scrapped its not too much of a far cry that the Tampomas is also suffering this fate as she is only in about 64 meters of water, and has possibly over 600 peoples remains trapped aboard her
Even children know that is a crime to rob war graves what is so hard to understand man😊😅😂🎉
Two step solution: 1) torpedo the salvage ships. 2) spread uranium dust over the remaining ships, thus voiding their value.
Best idea render them useless💥👍
They are a shipwreck of colonizers, not soldiers or noble man. This is the same arm forces that enslaved southeast, Whether it's japanese or the west. The same applied with the current chinese that claims SCS
This is clearly a complex issue but one of the things I would be interested in is who is buying this scrap metal?
Also, while I'm not outraged by "grave robbing" I am worried about the impact blasting and disturbing these wrecks has on the marine life that was established in and around them.
Too little too late for Most of the wrecks in Indonesia.
Imagine the geiger counter or sensitive device your holding right now could have the spirit of dead soldiers within it, that is shocking.
5:20 How can there be any flesh after 75 years. Please lah don't BS!!
There wouldn't be flesh, only bones and/or skulls.
@@jessstone7486 and teeth, and badges and dont forget the pharmo pure ampouled Morphia carried on/in every ships medic quarters.
probably a 75 year old can of meat
They are war graves. End of.
I don't see how there can be a question of illegality when it is well established that sunken warships are still considered the property of the nations who originally owned them. Indonesia may no longer be the "Dutch East Indies," but the Netherlands still exist and thus those ships still belong to them and should be protected as war graves.
Then ask Netherlands to pay for security, why should Indonesian be blamed?
Because it's happening in their waters and on their shores.
If so removing war wrecks is not a crime it should be as the remains belong in a war cemetery.
The ships were designated as war graves. Simple.
Interesting. I know two Dutch submarines have completely vanished.
who are the buyers, thats where the mystery ends
Western countries.
Most likely the very same countries that sent them all to die there! That’s why there is absolutely nothing being done about these atrocities being committed, nor are the media informing their citizens of these despicable acts!.
@@jimcarney7174 cleaning the ocean is now consider to be despicable acts. The Government should pay these people.
These muslims only respect their holy prophet, nothing else.
nothing you can expect from Indonesian government….😔😔
it is good they are recycling the wrecks which causes less pollution than primary mining extraction. They are cleaning up the trash left behind.
Do you really think that they extracted all the oil, hydraulic fluid and all other toxic stuff the correct way?? What if you grandfather was on one of those ships and they played soccer with his skull? I'm Dutch and I'm pretty pissed off! Do you call graves trash???
@@Peaceforallmankind67 exactly my great-grandfathers submarine Uss Shark 174 has not been found and my biggest fear is illegal salvagers might find it and scrap it before it is located and recorded. It is believed that my great-grandfather louis shane jr.'s officers sword sank with the ship. It would make me puke to know that his sword engraved with HIS name is sitting on someone's mantle piece without knowing the man and story behind it. Or worse it is also scrapped for it's metal. My family is huge on ancestry and knowing where the shark is would greatly help us and bring closure for us hell it is unknown where and when the shark was sunk time frame late January 1942-late February 1942. To locate the sub would bring closure to hundreds of people. The fact that the entire wreck may be removed before it has been located officially would be a devastating loss to nautical history of the silent service
They were war graves. What part of that is too difficult for you?
@@tenkloosterherman nothing wrong with digging up a grave and taking gold teeth either
Pirates, treasure hunters, all sorts of ptofiters are common in those areas, from countries along the strait, scrap trade, for valuable metals, bronze, high grade steel on ships. The research divers support teams may have leaked information where these wrecks are
Even children know that is a crime to rob war graves what is so hard to understand man😊😅😂🎉

I can't understand why anyone would destroy history. Even for money.
My uncle (my father's oldest brother) died aboard HrMs De Ruyter during the battle of the Java Sea. Being born 14 years after the war I've never met my uncle. I wish I had.
But these egotistical animals plundering my uncle's grave for profit should be severely punished. What an atrocious crime!
Sorry to say De Ruyter's wreck is now 100% gone. The only thing remaining is the imprint on the seabed where the wreck once lay.
You animal uncle also plundering locals,
What a racist you are
Closing the gate after losing the horses is kinda futile, punishing the guilty however should be top priority along with protecting what's left.
