My first time seeing the Dead was around ‘86, and (apart from hearing Casey Jones and Truckin’ on FM radio, which I liked) I was not aware of much about them except my two friends, who are really musical and brothers, were really into the Dead. I knew others who loved them but I had yet to really listen. Seeing them at Irvine Meadows, two things were clear. The love the crowd radiated to the band was palpable. Also, Jerry, although he certainly didn’t look the part of a rock star was a wonderfully expressive guitarist. As a guitar player, I was mighty impressed. That night, music was redefined from the theatre aspects of what I had been spoon fed on and real musicians making music divorced from “image” as a factor. They were anti-image, free of any fashion statements, but completely entertaining nevertheless. As I went on to collect tapes and hear all their early work, get into Bob Dylan myself and all the great music forms I could absorb from blues, jazz and folk and even bluegrass and country, I began to see how the Dead fit into the genres comprising the Great American songbook.
The ultimate binding force for them was the flawless and emotionally rich playing of Garcia. So full of subtlety, passing notes, complex yet achingly beautiful heart came through his fingers and he seldom repeated himself tonally, he was a never ending fountainhead of ideas.
He played as if his life depended on it and it was clear it did. Also, I realized all that free time also took many other greats down the abyss of addiction and Jerry sadly was no different. The music really never suffered from Jerry but his psyche and body did from the drugs. Apart from that lesson, we could never stop learning from his super rich sonic tapestry, the beauty his fingers produced made his other weaknesses seem trivial. Yet his music was anything but trivial, it was pure rich fields of color, bound by a deep intelligence and a stunningly playful heart.

Owen....how poetically brilliant you expressed the heart of Jerry! Jerry tapped a deep vein of creativity which in my book is the defining aspect of his expressive musical output. His creativity is unmatched and inspired a multitude of inspired copycats that keep his style alive.

The GD performed this song 9 times total - all in 1985, and I was there for 2 of them - including this one. After listening to all 9, I came back to this one as my favorite. Garcia's voice is in poor condition here, but his GUITAR SOLOS take center stage with emotive, lyrical brilliance. This often was the case in the '83 - '86 time period on nights when he was feeling good but his voice shot. Also, this is one of only TWO where he played GUITAR on the final line of the song - this is the better

Something about '83 to '86 grateful dead, Jerry so damn unhealthy, but the music so good, amazing, intriguing setlists, many many shows and cities, canyons ski resort, Hershey park, manor downs, a zoo in Oklahoma, weird right, kinda still an underground thing was GD and the scene. I’m sorry, but this is sublime. Bamboo fly rod is also sublime, yet less so. Both involve sensitive artistry wrought from raw materials we uploaded in a former epoch. Truly the place which I go to seeking the highest level of musical embrace, is this, or Stella Blue. Permanent resident of the Bluelight Hotel over here. The gratitude I have for living in this era, for having drank in 86 dead shows and hundreds of approximations, and for a few other artists that infiltrate me 🫣, the people I’ve shared it with, the heart it all opened in me, and finally, for me, for bending that ear initially so long ago, and throwing a grappling hook onto the yoke of China > Rider 9/24/82
What is a Dead show anyway? It’s a joy, a thrill, a pensiveness, a memory. It’s a curiosity, it’s an adoption, an adventure, and an assertion. It’s a communion, a confession, a sacrifice and binding contract. A rodeo, chiropractic and a circus of smiles. It’s factors more profound to us than the others would bet. It’s a gift. An anointing.

Garcia was stopped dead in his tracks when Brent died. They were working on some tunes, that were amazing -Dear Mr. Fantasy - and the BAM! OVER. I think it was more like regrouping, finding a new keyboard player and starting all over again, not losing interest. Shit, there are a lot of changes and personal changes to go through, that can f**k a person up. He, the entire band, had to regroup on stage, perform thru it. It's a difficult time. Can't expect things to be the same.

Imagine a young Bob Dylan standing in the shadow of the statue of liberty lookin up at it.
Looking at ellis island where his kin came into harbor. Now think of lady liberty and how each verse artistically describes her, think about it.
Thats why Bob Dylan wrote this.
But what elevates a song to this level is that it can have so many meanings and variable interpretations and they are all correct

Bro check the date of this video you are watching 4/7/85 .February on the east coast is cold the last tour they did on the east coast was '79 . Think about it like this The band was back east from Feb.>april they never did a tour that long after one of if not thee greatest tour of all europe '72. Come up with a ticket stub from feb. of '85 from nassau coliseum. Getting chased by the DEA in the parking lot of the coliseum in '81 sucked bad i stopped going there in '85 for that reason

I like this version a lot, but Bob's original is the best, followed by an exceptional version by Rick Nelson

Funny how 85 always seems overlooked. Lots of hidden gems that year. Garcia not looking too good health wise and I believe the drug use among the band was a bit out of control. The band was tired as well but this performance is nice. Damn I miss them 😢.

My favorite years are 82-85. When the band is on, they’re on fire!

"...Garcia lost interest in the band...this is true.". What a bs statement! Cite your source, don't just interject opinions as fact! Anyone who followed and/or saw the Grateful Dead during the Vince era can verify that Jerry had his moments where interest was not a question!! Now, his health and or dedication on a nightly basis is a whole different story!! The Grateful Dead were not defined by Philly performances.....

@DJTater69 if you had gone to enough shows {which i did} it was real easy to see and hear that garcia did lose interest in the GD. You say that there were moments in the vince era that jerry"s interest was not a question you are right but i can count them on one hand maybe 2 hands but it was never for a full show. your statement about the GD not defined by philly shows is pretty fucking stupid. Who said they were? And garcia did lose interest after brent passed, listen to him play it is obvious
