HEPA Model Y Retrofit (DO THIS NOW Before It's too Late)

- I couldn’t wait for an official retrofit for my March 21 Tesla Model Y build so I decided to buy the parts and install it myself. It was the easiest retrofit ever, easier than replacing my cabin air filters and cost less than $200! So hurry and check to see if you can do this retrofit and buy the parts ASAP before Tesla officially sells it on their website increasing the cost of this retrofit by ALOT.
Most cars starting after July 21 should have the Hepa filter already with the biodefense mode (BDM) button. When doing this aftermarket retrofit you may not get a biodefense mode button but it’s ok. The Hepa filter engages when you have recirculating air OFF and removes any smells, pollen, smoke from entering your cabin.

As of now, Tesla has their own retrofit kit that you can get installed and they update the software in the car too so you have the BDM button

Glad you mentioned airflow is significantly reduced when recirculate mode is off and that using the standard pleated cabin filters solves that issue. I would've been concerned about strain on the blower motor otherwise.

I already have BWD installed standard on my tesla and honestly you never use it unless you're driving through burning smoke or some apocalyptic scenario. The HEPA filter works even in standard mode, BWD is just for extreme environments/situations
Thanks for the video! I followed every step you made, including accidentally dropping a screw into the frunk cavity 😂. Sadly I could not find where the screw landed, oh well hopefully it doesn’t cause issues later on.

That Allen wrench will put a hex on you if you're not careful with the names. The "M" is for metric. On the inside air filters the tab goes up so you can grab it to remove the filter. I've worked in Irvine and Tustin. The air can get dirty.

FYI, newer HEPA filters have a metal inserts that will make it impossible to screw in the right side. Possibly the metal insert can be taken out to make it work. One M6 with washer will hold it well, no issues.

This is also my problem just got my first Tesla model y and it’s a June 31 baby 1 day before July with the added hepa filtration….so I also want to do this as well….is there any news on the button?
Wow this is an amazing tesla video! Definitely a unique one. I’m surprised that the cabin filters are still needed with the hepa. You can’t just skip them?
You still have to filter out the air inside the cabin

Thanks for the video did this for my model Y’s. Unfortunately Tesla said they couldn’t code it for the HEPA filter because no retrofit is available
Keep Trying. Another owner finally got it after the 3rd time
I did a service center visit today and the tech was nice enough to entertain my request and to his amazement the BioDefense button was added. The tech himself was surprised just scheduled a second SC appt for my wife’s MY. Thanks for your help Chris!

Last update Tesla remoted into my second vehicle and switch the fan to HEPA. I just had to do a reset for the biodefense button to show up. Hopefully that helps other viewers

Hit or miss from tesla service. Overall I never use it. Just glad I got the Hepa filter
@@EverydayChris Hey Chris. I just installed my HEPA filter. It was pretty simple. I did have to buy a rivet nut tool as my MYLR did not have threaded holes. Now, I will try to get SC to update the software to add the BIOHAZARD button. Thanks again!!

M5 is the one prior to M6 but M6 can identify as M5 and it’ll work just as well.
Since you have the hepa filter, why not just remove the cabin filter? What will the flow be like?

Probably not. The only reason it is possible because the current Y has that option. Current 3 does not.

@@EverydayChris so swing and a miss on the parts. They got the apron and the filter itself, but no duct. 🤬🤬 Appointment was at 9, had to wait till 10 as the only parts guy they had was the one unloading the semi that was delivering parts. 🤬🤬

Did you manage to get the bio defense button yet?
Yes! But with the new update you are able to control the auto fan speed. I honestly never use the button because the air already filters
