Recently traded in my 21 M3 SR+ for a 24 MYP and didn't know anything about the BIO mode, I just heard about it before on the Model X but had no idea it was also on the MY. On the test drive, I was wondering what the button was for so I pressed it and within a minute or two I honestly thought to myself, "hmm the air I'm breathing seems so much better for some reason". After learning that's what the mode was, it makes total sense! There was some traces of the smoke in the air (Bay Area) the other day and I put it to use, it worked awesome! Speaking on that subject, I remember when those crazy historic wildfires were raging up here some years back and Elon offered the firefighters, first responders, etc the use of a fleet of Model X's because they had the BIO mode which would let everyone in the car be able to breathe fresh air. The Model X has no air intake to get clogged with soot like a combustion engine, etc. Very generous of Elon to do that when he didn't even have to and I'd imagine it helped a lot of people.
Glad you mentioned airflow is significantly reduced when recirculate mode is off and that using the standard pleated cabin filters solves that issue. I would've been concerned about strain on the blower motor otherwise.
FYI, newer HEPA filters have a metal inserts that will make it impossible to screw in the right side. Possibly the metal insert can be taken out to make it work. One M6 with washer will hold it well, no issues.
That Allen wrench will put a hex on you if you're not careful with the names. The "M" is for metric. On the inside air filters the tab goes up so you can grab it to remove the filter. I've worked in Irvine and Tustin. The air can get dirty.
I already have BWD installed standard on my tesla and honestly you never use it unless you're driving through burning smoke or some apocalyptic scenario. The HEPA filter works even in standard mode, BWD is just for extreme environments/situations
A question: I suppose the intake air are filtered by the smaller internal cabin air filter from old model y without the external hepa filter. Once you retrofit the hepa filteration module, will the intake air be filtered twice through the hepa filter in the first place , the cabin air filter in the second? If the air is filtered twice, that could explain the weaker wind when you turn on the outside air.
Thanks for the video! I followed every step you made, including accidentally dropping a screw into the frunk cavity 😂. Sadly I could not find where the screw landed, oh well hopefully it doesn’t cause issues later on.
Wow this is an amazing tesla video! Definitely a unique one. I’m surprised that the cabin filters are still needed with the hepa. You can’t just skip them?
@@EverydayChris I did pick it up while they were closed though so I didn’t get to ask a tech about adding the Biohazard defense mode to it. I hope they will
thanks for this video. I notice the parts listed in the video and the ones listed in your video description are somewhat different. is there a reason for that?
@@EverydayChris Hey Chris. I just installed my HEPA filter. It was pretty simple. I did have to buy a rivet nut tool as my MYLR did not have threaded holes. Now, I will try to get SC to update the software to add the BIOHAZARD button. Thanks again!!
Highly recommend this video for anyone looking to install the Hepa Filter in their Model Y. It is precise, parts were exact, and no issues doing this myself. I drive 3 hours a day in peak traffic taking my kids to and from school. Thank you so much, and Wish you and your channel continued success.
This is also my problem just got my first Tesla model y and it’s a June 31 baby 1 day before July with the added hepa filtration….so I also want to do this as well….is there any news on the button?
I did a service center visit today and the tech was nice enough to entertain my request and to his amazement the BioDefense button was added. The tech himself was surprised just scheduled a second SC appt for my wife’s MY. Thanks for your help Chris!
Last update Tesla remoted into my second vehicle and switch the fan to HEPA. I just had to do a reset for the biodefense button to show up. Hopefully that helps other viewers

Chris where in the Tesla app for the retro fit?😮
ok i just put in the service order to get this done
So cheap and they do it for you now!
As of now, Tesla has their own retrofit kit that you can get installed and they update the software in the car too so you have the BDM button
Thank you for this video. Our SC is ordering the parts for me right now, and I have the threaded holes already!! Can't wait to get this in.

Any luck on getting the software update to show the biodefense icon?
Followed this video on my installation. Super helpful!
Chris a natural funny guy. Good video my dude
Thank you again for sharing. And I busted a gut laughing when you mentioned that BDM reminds you of Bowel movements. LOL !!! 🤣
Haha

Great content Chris!
Great video! Many thanks for that tutorial.
Hi Chris. Any update on the software configuration changes? I am planning to order parts per your recommendation but concerning about the fan speed.
Yup! Apparently there’s a retrofit ticket available now
@@EverydayChris just got the reply from customer service and the quote is $270 parts, labors and tax included. Confirmed they can install it now.

How often do you need to replace that brother?
Did you try activating bio weapon defense mode using voice command?
Yeah you need the actual button first
Wow this is an amazing tesla video! Definitely a unique one. I’m surprised that the cabin filters are still needed with the hepa. You can’t just skip them?
You still have to filter out the air inside the cabin
@@EverydayChris dang. Twice as many filters to buy!
Is there a HEPA from Tesla for a Model 3? or only the Y?
Only the Y!
Hello Chris, is there anyway we can get the Bioweapon Defense button in the retrofit? Thank you.
its tough. based on the forums. However, ill tell you after I got it I've used it zero times haha
Awesome video! Keep us updated on the BDM button (not bowel movement!) request from Tesla
Will do!
I put it in like you said and they actually just charged me labor and installed it themselves.
Wow coool finally
@@EverydayChris I did pick it up while they were closed though so I didn’t get to ask a tech about adding the Biohazard defense mode to it. I hope they will
Did you manage to get the bio defense button yet?
Yes! But with the new update you are able to control the auto fan speed. I honestly never use the button because the air already filters
Since you have the hepa filter, why not just remove the cabin filter? What will the flow be like?
still need to filter the air INSIDE the cabin as well
thanks for this video. I notice the parts listed in the video and the ones listed in your video description are somewhat different. is there a reason for that?
i think i talk about it. it changes. use the one in the description

Hit or miss from tesla service. Overall I never use it. Just glad I got the Hepa filter

Any planning to retrofit the old door panels to the new wood door panels? Do you know the parts no for this?
Seems tough
Keep up the good work
OEM cargo cover next please. Nobody has done a video for that yet.

so, how much is it cost to replace bio filter? only buy filter, we can replace it ourself? thanks

Probably not. The only reason it is possible because the current Y has that option. Current 3 does not.
There’s not enough space for the 3!
