It would have been fantastic if they had included an option to play a version of the remake that was a 1:1 recreation of the classic NES version, just with updated visuals. I was a bit disappointed when I got further into the game and noticed that many elements were different from the original. At the same time, it was nice to see what was behind some of the previously closed doors. I heard that the developers had to cut a lot of areas in the original due to limitations with the floppy disks and cartridges. For instance, the door beside the waterfall was apparently accessible in the Mac version.
I had this game for the game boy when I was a kid. This is the first time I've seen this remake, it looks amazing, I really need to play it. great vid btw.
I wonder how many people read your video descriptions. They are such well-written, full-fledged reviews, I almost enjoy them more than the videos themselves, though I obviously enjoy and admire the work you put into both 😊
almost everyone who has played this game.. if you picked up the hammer or helmet first, you would be fried to a crisp XD or any of the other items in that case :P
Great artwork.. When I was 11 years old me and my friend finished shadow gate on Nes... Got long stuck when u had to drink bottle 2 to cross the cracky bridge... Never thought bout it by ourselfs.. Early internet helped back then... After that finished the game on our own... Maybe biggest game achievement back then.. Since we are Dutch and it was hard enough in English when you are that young.. Never knew this one existed.. Whatched the whole vid. Awesome remake..
I did everything but the damsel by myself on the NES. Even after she killed me my young brain kept trying to figure out how to save her, never considering attacking an option.
I had nightmares for years from the NES one. I consider it an early horror game. This is more a fantasy adventure style game. Which i think is the tone they wanted for the original but it went more creepy. Both have strengths though.
Why is that strange to say ? Modern games rarely, if ever, capture the atmosphere or spirit of older games. Thats not to say they dont have merit. But one of the things that makes the games of the golden age so timeless is that their magic, charm, and atmosphere can no longer be achieved in these diluted times.

The Shadowgate remake is an amazing title that, providing you have the requisite amount of patience and/or nostalgia to overcome its steep (and very welcome) challenges, you're sure to love. So when are we going to see the follow-up, guys? You missed your 2016 deadline...

(defeated by Metal Glove wearing KO punch) Goblins 3 and 4 OK BRO lets Tag team him NO WAY he can kill both of us!! (stun with flash spell and ....defeated by 2 KO punches) Goblins everywhere "HOW DO WE DEFEAT THAT PUNCH!!??"
The Creators should remake Deja Vu and Uninvited too! You know, What would it look like if it was remade? Uninvited would be like it is INDEED a Scary Game, Making it a Real Horror game with Spooky Graphics while Deja Vu would be like a Nice Detective Game.
Hi can anyone help? I keep running out of flame because somehow my torches (unlit) are in hot menu now and I don’t know where they disappear to when I in-assign them from it (not in bag) I was able to re-light before this but now I can’t??
This remake isn't bad, but it had nowhere near the traumatic effect on my childhood as the original did! Lol. The NES original was nightmare fuel for me for some years
It’s weird how this has new arrangements of the NES version’s music when the original home computer versions of the original version had no music in them and the NES version was the first version to have any music at all.
Where they used the original music as a guideline, it was good. However, the wrathe and dragon scenes didn't, and they felt very different because of it, and not in a good way. A good DLC for this game would be just a music redo to fix that problem. Other than that, it looks neat. I'm going to go buy it.
Wait, wasn't Del Cottonwood the main character of Shadowgate 64? And they teased him for their Beyond Shadowgate remake (We are still waiting for it, get to it, devs!) as main character? If the remake ever gets released, my nostalgic self will find himself rather confused
1:49:05 10 years and its still funny to see my mothers name in this game, and she have never play shadowgate. her name in this game is a misunderstanding because my brother who wanted to donate money to kickstarter, but he couldn't so instead our mother helped him with it, and made sure his name got on the list, but in the end it was her name that ended up there instead. Believe me when I say that we were all confused, but then we thought they looked so funny
I think it really comes down to the aesthetic and atmosphere of the original, not to mention the haunting and unnerving Ost. For those old enough to remember, the original felt like playing through a "Fighting Fantasy" Novel albeit without the dice rolls. While I'm sure this is a fine game in it's own right, it simply cannot replicate the nostalgia of the nes/game boy versions.
This game, while very handsome to look at, does not have the same feel of the NES version and seems rather bland in a way. Some things just can't be improved upon! (Including the incredible music!)
Not a fan of the over the top art style. Sound track was ‘Skyrimmed’. Shoulda gone old school retro D&D 2nd edition for inspiration... maybe a Pen and ink style... make it like animated graphic book.
I tried to like this game, but I dunno why something that keep me from totally liking it the NES version (Swedish Language). Maybe back then it was considered as a "RPG" genre before Final Fantasy was released in Europe
Loved this game on NES. Used to speed run it and time myself. Got this soon as it came out. Absolutely one of my all time favorites

agreed. this remake tries too hard to be high-fantasy. the dialog is ponderous and clunky.

It is strange to say, but the 1987 version was way more creepy and atmospheric than the modern remake.

nothing beats the original. good graphics and gameplay, etc. but this game really doesnt sit well with me. a little too sleep inducing
