    Empress is such a great company! When I had an issue with my Multidrive a few months back I emailed their customer support and I was on the phone with the owner to troubleshoot the next day. We couldn't get it working so I mailed it to Canada and had it back in working order in a week. My heart skipped a beat when such an expensive unit went out, but I couldn't have asked for better service from the team at Empress!

    I love the point that Mick was making near the end of the video about seeing people with more talent than you. I consider myself a derivative guitarist, there are thousands of people with more talent, more lick, more knowledge and more soul. Which is why the areas ventured in this video & many That Pedal Show videos of soundscapes & sculpting sounds that inspire is so important and so relevant. This is why people watch and what you guys are doing matters.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Sam Anderson Thank you Sam. Totally agree with your POV. It's not about being 'better', it's about being inspired. Hard to remember that sometimes. :0)

    • @GitShiddy
      @GitShiddy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's more than being inspired it's finding your voice. This show despite on the surface being "look at this cool shit!" is in fact about that.

      @ThatPedalShow  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sam Anderson So glad you get it Sam. It's really dawned on me more than ever since we started doing the show (Mick here). Your voice is where great tone is. In fact your voice when you have something meaningful to say musically is the very definition of good tone, IMHO. :0)

    Great video, as always.
    I got into effects after shattering my left (fretting) hand in 14 places. Sadly I gave up guitar for 3 years and instead spent my time making digital music and exploring soundscapes. I was convinced by some friends to join their band and decided to bring my newly found sound engineering knowledge back to guitar. My playing is probably more interesting now than it was before my injury. I have to compensate for not being able to play as technically well as I used to by filling more frequencies and choosing my notes more carefully. Especially as I play in a 3 guitar band. I've found expression control of pedals to really help with this too. Our new song has an expression controlled ring mod into fuzz solo, which I'm particularly proud of. Thanks again for the weekly inspiration!
    Cheers
    Kelvin

TPS to me is like a real life version 'Wayne's World' - awesome riffs, musical guests, wood paneling, technically savvy sidekick with dark rimmed glasses, me seeing a pedal and saying "It will be mine. Advanced uses of the Reflex
    Thank you guys! I have learned and keep learning so much from you.
    Expression pedals: Unfortunately, many players consider the use of expression pedals somewhat of a myth and dont bother to investigate the possibilities besides from blending in a reverb or delay trail. Especially when Midi-CC is mentioned, many players just stop listening.
    IMHO there simply is no need for any other expression pedal, since the Reflex came out. I absolutely object to the sales strategy of certain manufacturers, that are selling pedals which can only be controlled by their own expression pedals. This is of course incorrect, because the Reflex´s analog outputs can be set to different POT-values and therefore match 99% of all analog expression inputs.
    My advanced uses of the Source-Audio Reflex:
    1. Specific frequency boost
    Reflex (linear mode) -> Source Audio Para EQ (control a single, probably mid freq band) -> any drive or Fuzz. Result: Boost specific overtones of a drive in a chosen frequency spectrum via Expression Pedal.
    2. Customisable Tremolo / Volume Pedal
    Reflex (linear / oscillator modes) -> Source Audio Para EQ (control volume). Result: Customisable Tremolo, Volume Pedal (Swells) or Shred-Kill-Switch
    3. Whammy madness
    Reflex (linear or oscillator modes) -> Whammy. Result: Anything from police siren, alien alarm sounds (add DELAYYYY/REVERB :D ), staccato octave changes to crazy interval blends (use Whammy in parallel with dry-mix control before Whammy for best results)
    Reflex (oscillator modes with small CC range, e.g. (min 0, max 5-8) -> Whammy (1 octave up/down). Result: VIBRATO !!!! :D
    4. Elektron Analog Drive unleashed
    Reflex (linear /oscillator modes) -> Analog Drive (control volume). Result: Customisable Tremolo, Volume Pedal or Shred-Kill-Switch
    Reflex (linear mode) -> Analog Drive (control EQ and/or boost on Clean Boost setting) -> Drive/Fuzz. Result: Boost frequencies/boost your drive/fuzz pedal
    Reflex (linear or oscillator mode) -> Analog Drive (control mid freq sweep) -> Drive/Fuzz. Result: control mid-frequencies on your drive/fuzz pedal in a linear or "auto-wah" fashion
    Reflex (linear or oscillator mode) -> Analog Drive (control gain) -> Drive/Fuzz. Result: smoothly add any gain type before or after your drives
    Reflex (linear or oscillator mode) -> Analog Drive (control gain) -> Result: smoothly add gain linear or create a "Gain Tremolo"
    5. POST EQ Control
    Drive/Fuzz -> EQ (e.g. Source Audio Para EQ or Analog Drive, controlled by Reflex). Result: Post-EQ your Drive Pedal / Drive Section with any of the above mentioned methods to control eq-bands / mid freq or dynamically add low-pass, high-pass filters to your drive/fuzz.
    The above uses are a result from learning about gain-stages and out of the box thinking when it comes to signal paths from you guys.
    I saw that the "Sonuus Voluum" Pedal has similar features to the Reflex and a couple of additional options. Definitely worth investigating.
    (BTW Mick, Dan ... can you please ask Source Audio to finally release an Oscillator-Editor for the Reflex´s "Custom" Setting ? We need a "SAW", not just ramp up.)
    Thanks again!
    Joe/Hamburg/Germany

    Great to hear Dan discovered The Cardiacs... better late than never. 1999, I supported Dark Star (and Ultrasound, same gig, Leadmill) whose frontman, 'Bic', used to be in Cardiacs and Levitation. We all got on and had a gander at each others rare 60s/70s gear. RIP Tim Smith
    Conversely, I just discovered Split Enz' 'Time and Tide'... that album should be as revered as anything produced in the last fifty years.

    Awesome video, as always. You missed one of my favorite, easy expression pedal tricks (or I was distracted for a sec). Set the expression pedal to control feedback of your delay and have toe down be infinite feedback (or close to). You can then get wild sounds out of your guitar, but as the chords change, just rock toe - heel - toe, and you get to start over with a new sound. You can build chords out of arpeggios, slide up to a note and get the repeat over and over, or just build a wall of noise in a key, but still have enough control to reel it back in or change the chord! You can also hit your note first, and then bring the feedback all the way up which will give you infinite sustain as you're missing the pick attack so get a super smooth repeat that blends right in.

    Great stuff- I've been delving into expression pedals lately, and it opens an entirely new palette of tones from my pedals... loving it.
    As an aside- I know Mick is a Fuzz Face fan, and Dan a Tone Bender devotee. The Deep Trip BOG (F. Face) and Hell Bender (T. Bender Mk. 2), are fantastic yet more expansive takes- and might be of tremendous interest to you gentlemen.
    Goodness- the Thorpy Veteran was one powerful sound! Killer!

    Great show.
    I edited my original comment
    I have both the Ball pedals - they’re great for adding swelled tones but the OD in particular can be a bit on the noisy side - tbh, it’s taken quite a while to get a consistent tone I’m happy with - but it happened tonight - I’ve had to move my pedals around quite a bit but killed it tonight - hope it lasts ...I really love the boosted/gain/volume swell functionality -
    Btw - as far as I know, the pedals are both designed to pass through a bit of the clean tone even full on - for the delay, using a tap tempo helps with the set levels
    I see these as live tools more than recording tools

    Congratulations on your 100k milestone! "Raise the micks". That made me snort with laughter.
    Great show and great topic.
    I never had much use for an expression pedal until I bought my 11 Rack. I mostly use it to control the wah and volume.
    My search for an expression pedal wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Lots of different features to consider. Things like actuation, calibration, size, construction and durability were all taken into account. I finally chose the dunlop pedal. I liked it in the fact that it also had a volume pot built in so I can just plug my guitar into it and use it as a volume pedal when using my other rigs.
    Seems durable enough as I have not had any issues so far. I never have any issues when I purchase the extended warranty though.
    Looking forward to your next topic!
    I also thank you for your replies. Those responses take this channel from watching a great show to hanging with friends.

IMHO That Pedal Show is the finest guitar-related content available on TH-cam, and your extensions into That Amp Show & That Guitar Show are overdue. Hold on a minute, I don't know if anyone else has already mentioned this but it seems to me the Ernie Ball pedals are effects with a dedicated foot control. They do not have an external expression output you can plug in to the Expression input on another pedal. One of my personal favourite expression pedals is the Zoom FP02M - compact, solid magnesium alloy casting, not expensive and I think it looks cool too.

      OK but it's just that when I think of expression pedals I wouldn't think of one of those Ernie Ball pedals. I think they really missed a potentially great selling point when they did not include an expression output from them which you could use with other pedals that have expression inputs.

    I love your videos guys! They are so much fun and it's the best to check out new pedals or maybe something you have your eye on.
    The Ernie Ball Overdrive Expression Pedal, Mike Einziger from Incubus has being using it this tour on his "clean" amp. He used to get down and tweak his overdrive pedal in between songs, but with this pedal he can easily change it with his foot. He even changes OD levels during songs. I think i might buy it. Sounds like a fun pedal to mess around with!

    I'd love to see some more subtle bass specific stuff (subtle (old school) (tube) (pre)amp/tone/ OD/ fuzz/ effects) , but I get it, there's just so little bass stuff to cover. The rest is up to the NU-brands, like Darkglass...

    Informative show, that white mission exp pedal used with 2 H9's can be programmed to control multiple effects with different heel and toe and toe switch functions. You could do a whole show and that alone. It'll really set your hair on fire.

    Great video as always. Love to see how happy you both are to be back and making videos for us, we're so grateful. The Ernie Ball pedals are such an interesting idea but they don't seem quite there yet- I wish the Ambient Delay had a larger range to it's delay times. I have a HOF2 and love using the mash feature on it; I want a Flashback2 for that reason. Although, I have to say, WOW that Delay Llama is freaking awesome with the modulation on the repeats and Q control, and the hold feature... just amazing. I'm gonna have to get my hands on one to test out. That was definitely my favorite part of the video :). Maybe I missed this, but do you need the Jam expression pedal to use with the Delay Llama? Sounds like I'll need two expression pedals for it, one for level and one for delay time... oh the things you two do to my wallet... :D.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex Kavo Hi Alex. We think you have to use the Jam pedals one. Hit up their website or send them an email. They'll give you the definitive answer. Cheers!

    • @alexkavo8930
      @alexkavo8930 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks guys appreciate it. I called around guitar shops in New York City until I found a shop that had the Delay Llama Supreme and while I can't afford it at the moment. Wow what a truly inspiring pedal. It's one of those things that you plug in and just start writing to.
      On an unrelated note, a couple questions on noise gates. First, What are your thoughts on them in general? Do either of you ever use one? I have a NS-2 on my board right after my tuner that I loop a Dunlop Original Cry Baby, EHX Micro Q-tron, TSDX9, OCD, MXR Super Badass Distortion, and SP Compressor through (in that order). I go back and forth with having it on and off. I find I get some slight differences in the tonal characteristics as well as the dynamics from my playing with it on and off. Off it has a feel of more headroom even amongst the added hum; but there are also times I feel like I need it on if say I'm using say a Wah effect, OD, and compressor together, or if I'm pushing my TS into another OD. Both ways sound great but I'm curious what exactly it does to the audio signal. I know it has a threshold for the level it will let pass through the filter, but I also get a feeling of added compression when I play through it. Is that actually what's happening or is it in my head?

    I've had the source audio reflex for a few months on my board now and it's been awesome.
    I will give a word of warning about it though. I've had issues with it causing some weird Midi PC changes conflicting with other pedals that it's controlling when it was in the midi chain following my controller that was sending PC changes to the other pedals.
    I solved the issue by rearranging the midi chain order and turning off the midi through option on it while using the firmware update software. I hope this helps someone!

    Another fantastic display guys! Expression pedals save us six string slingers from a little back trouble as well ;) I wanted to suggest circuit breaker cables for when you were switching guitars a bit. Theres plenty out there, some with switches like Planet Waves(which ive used and liked) or guys like Ed from Mad Hatter guitar products makes ones that switch off the signal when you unplug the cable without a switch. Of course, Dan could come up with a nifty design as well ;) Keep'em coming guys, glad you're back!

    Okay so this makes me think of an idea I've had for years. There's a Steven Wilson solo on Lightbulb Sun LP that is just... massive. And clippy. And broken. But so wonderful. And I've always wanted to find a live alternative to the amount of processing he underwent to get that tone. In my head it would work as feeding a super fuzzy or clippy pedal into an expression

    This Source Audio Reflex led me to research this stuff in quite some depth a year or so ago. Should I afford such, my future board will be a Aclam Smart Track S2 loaded with: a Source Audio Reflex, a Boss ES-5 (to be replaced by a GigRig G2 when funds allow), a TC Electronic Polytune 2, a WMD Utility Parametric EQ, a Boss MD-500, a Boss DD-500, and a Boss RV-500. The delay and reverb will be run in parallel, and the whole thing will be powered by an MXR M238 Iso Brick (to be replaced by a Generator system when funds allow).

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +CodyMBB Ah, sorry I shouldn't have said that really. I guess what I mean is that //to me//, Fuzz faces and Rangemasters are Strat pedals.... because that's my experience with them and I like the way the volume pot on the guitar cleans them up. Any pedal, any guitar. Learning how they interact is just about time put in. I've got 25 years in Strats. :0)

      CodyMBB MXR Micro Amp+ can bump up your output a bit, or a Boss GE-7 (I think Graphic Equalizer) can be used to make a buffered signal and gives a good EQ / volume booster.
