I remember spending an entire Sunday riding the DLR trains in early 1995. I was a French language assistant at a posh private school and was in awe of what city planners, architects and investors had done to turn a derelict industrial wasteland into a vibrant, modern district with luxury condos, high-rise office buildings, an airport and its own light rail system. You Brits are wonderful and never cease to amaze me.
Thanks so much for posting this journey. Some of my fondest memories of residing in London for 6 months came jumping out to me while watching this DIY documentary. I took a flat near Crosssharbour and commuted into central London every day despite having ready access to a vehicle. Drinking beer and debating with the locals at The George and getting my groceries at Asda became the norm. As an American I have come to respect Londoners-I rarely felt alone in such a metropolis. I worked 4 10 hour days per week at The US Embassy so I was bestowed with the honor to really get out and explore this fine city. Regretfully 6 months time was not enough. Being a Londoner I felt I developed a real sense of identity with the British people. My only complaint is the fact I can no longer find a decent Cornish Pasty anywhere.
@@Mounhas David I think there may be companies here in Cornwall who will do "Pasties by Express post" to anywhere in the world. Usually uncooked and frozen, but you just thaw and then bake and there you are! So, if your cravings get too bad.... :-) Nothing beats eating real proper pasties on a seat overlooking a Cornish harbour though - so do be sure to visit Cornwall when you next make it back to the UK

One of the most legendary cities, the sheer scale and grandeur of turning the Docks and the banks of Thames into what they are today is an example and a feat of its own! Huge respect from Sofia, Bulgaria, London, and thanks for housing a lot of bulgarians within your legendary "walls" as well
I know! Something you can get away with when you have a light railway. You couldn't do this with regular trains, or even London Underground trains. It's why the DLR feels more like a rollercoaster than a railway! .. it's thrilling going up and then suddenly taking a sharp right turn before plunging down into a tunnel at speed!!
this os why the train is so unsteady on the straight tracks, swaying side to side. The wheels are con-caved in such a way it allows to take sharp bends but it will sway because the wheels cant balance on the tracks
In about 5 years, Singapore will have its very own version of the DLR, called the Jurong Region Line (JRL). Love the uniqueness and eccentricity of the DLR in London from Singapore. Cheers!

The child was very excited. There was a Portuguese lady doing a lot of chatting. A fascinating journey that must cover a lot of history. Presumably the DLR uses some of the old tube lines. Did the train pass through Marc Brunels tunnel, the first in the world built under a river? Limehouse used to be a shady area notorious for Chinese sailors and opium dens. Lots of Peabody like flats around Shadwell ( the first big builder of social housing.
Most interesting was seeing the odd building that Jerry failed to bomb. The East End folks had a hard time in WW2 and the new buildings and open areas give an idea of the terrible destruction they endured. A lot of land though has been made available by the closure of the docks, which of course was also a prime Luftwaffe target.
What I like about the DLR is that even though it is automated, it still has much of a "feel" of ordinary rapid transit/light rail. There are no platform doors, the system has many branches, and it runs through many environments, including tunnels and on the ground
He means the platform edge doors - these form a safety barrier to reduce the risk of passengers (specially children) from falling into the rails, the train will aline its door sets with the ones in the barrier and will simultaneously open & close both doors, these barriers are made of toughened safety glass with metal frames - these are slowly being introduced at some international train stations, because of how safe they are - in comparison to the old [Victorian - when the railway was invented] traditional open platform, which are extremely dangerous

In just 9 years so much has changed in south Quay. It feels weird seeing it in this video without Madison, Wardian and Landmark Pinnacle. It is like a completely different place.

People don't do disruption, though. They expect someone to wave a magic wand and it all be done immediately. Round where I live they're raising a road bridge so they can electrify the line and people were bitching about the works. Not like there was another bridge literally 300 yards further along.
I have worked on the DLR for 19 years but up until now, the Lewisham to Mudchute line was operated by a different company so I had very little reason to work on that leg. Now we have taken it over, I have been watching videos of this section of track to get a better understanding of track assets and locations.
OMG, Heron Quays, Canary Wharf & West India Quay stations are so near, in fact it's equivalent to singapore's Outram Park to Chinatown to Clark Quay Stations
I thought that 'The Kid" was quite well behaved actually. Part of the attraction to the DLR for kids is that they can sit at the front and pretend they are the driver. My little grandson loves it. We do Shadwell to Bank and back again. So if you are on the same train as us please don't moan ;)
Should do the route into Bank at night. It looks quite spectacular as the train travels around the tall buildings before decending into the depths that is Bank station.
This is why I always have my noise-cancelling headphones (Galaxy Buds) on playing my bass boosted music on maximum volume every time I travel anywhere. And if I can still hear them, I just get off the train and get the next one.
i was on a DLR going through the tunnel HOLY SHIT the train was rocking from side to side also did you know in that tunnel there is a tiny pathway on the right side of the tunnel
The most impressive thing here is the complete lack of any graffiti throughout the journey. It is apparent that any graffiti appearing has been painted over. To my mind, such a policy in the end makes the vandals mostly give up, and this should be done on railways nationally.
In Toronto our current transit train system is way to small for its population. There is currently construction building a new 19km light rail system line (we currently have no light rail systems) and 10km of it will run underground like a subway. There is another section of the city that was due to build a 7km, 7 stations light rail line above ground but travelling on a separate track from the road . However people complain that Light Rail systems don't work well mainly because our city has the 6th biggest old Trolly/Streetcar whatever you want call it, system in the world that mostly runs on the street sharing with car traffic and they have yet to see the finished light rail line that is still under construction. So instead people seem to not trust light rail thinking it is not much different then a streetcar and want a 3km, 2 stations Subway expansion that cost double the amount proposed for the Light Rail system. If only they saw DLR in London they would realize it works great and is nothing like our old streetcars that are more like a bus then a train.

Yes, the current Island Gardens station is not the original one (which was above ground and had two platforms, not an Island platform like now). In order to cross the river into Deptford and Greenwich they opted for a tunnel rather than a bridge. So it meant having to have a new station at Island Gardens.
ah this is the journey I took every week day for the past year to get to college (lewisham to Canary wharf or Poplar... then change a couple times to get to East india) but now it's over I doubt I'll need to take this route again for a long time... I don't know why I feel kinda sad about it cause rush hour commuting every day is totally soul draining haha, but it became a routine I guess I'll miss a bit...

Where the DLR runs an industrial wasteland has been developed into a business area, with only a few green patches.

The sharpness of some of those turns and the insane gradients have always amazed me with the DLR

+Lry This isn't the tube. This is the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) it has fully automated trains. This is seperate to the London Underground (Tube)
