    Oh. I have so many ideas now for my iMortor 3.0... thank you so much. It is so hard to find anyone who has upgraded one. I have wanted to upgrade battery and controller to get more power and add regen braking as I need the added braking power for laundry day when I hook up my trailer. Now I am confident about the undertaking.

    10.000KM on my mostly stock imortor clocked: I potted the bluetooth module in epoxy, drilled a hole in the bearing seal to insert shimano grease and reinforced the wiring inside. Made a special cover for over the battery to help it protect against rain and splashing. Made a seperate 10AH ebike battery that is wired in parallel with a charge port. I hope it will last me allot longer because I love riding it.

    4yrs since last comment but Im happy to make it another Thumbs Up! I have one of these imortor wheels and it broke both my mobile phones! Evidently that USB charging port isn't as safe as it needs to be as there seems to be nothing wrong with the wheel or the batteries within. Apparently the Upgrade you'd do is to replace the batteries with higher Ah rated ones, keeping the same 37v voltage then you'd get longer rides but not faster ride. I like your upgrade better >>>>>>>>>

    First! I remember vaguely that I had a bit of trouble with Androids relatively new 'permission pop up'-directive when I did that ESP32 BLE thingy. I could imagine, that that is also whats causing the app to malfunction. Because I got no pop ups asking for Bluetooth permission ... just an idea ...

    • @bardenegri21

    Great video. I use a 1000 watt 11.6 amp hour 48 volt setup, rear wheel on an Orbia Urban bike as my daily commute. The extra power brings two less desired outcomes, one is extra torque which will see you snap spokes frequently and secondly is battery life between charges. I get about an hour out of a single charge but I weigh about 95kg and the bike is heavy with the motor and battery on it as well. I get about 45km to 50 km top speed, depending on wind and incline. I retrofitted disk brakes as clutch brakes are not good enough to stop you.

      If your hub/rim can handle drilling larger eyelets look into motorcycle spokes, nipples, and rim inserts. Rebuild your wheels properly with spoke prep compound (probably the most neglected step in proper wheel building). Also clean spokes, even new ones, to the point you would use them as eating utensils with guests, before adding spoke prep. Use the heaviest brass spoke nipples you can find. I have seen good results from wheelsmith 2.0mm straight gauge spokes and their brass nipples for extreme use. I personally have broken a lot of DT spokes in all varieties and stopped using them even though they are the most reputable brand in all the shops I've worked at.... After you break 3 spokes in a wheel, its done and time to respoke/rebuild.

    what about getting a 9ah battery pack, the controller says 9a, so on 36v we get 324w, that should mean a little bit more speed and mileage without disassemble the wheel ... i don't have a clue in what controller to buy anyways :-)

    I'm attempting to add a new 36v 10 amp battery to this same exact wheel, cld you tell me what all I wld need. Already have the battery just not sure how to go about hooking it up...

    • @MrJob91
      @MrJob91 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you need to open the stock battery and add some wires. Wire a 10A fused and wired XT60 connector to the + and - on the Battery BMS. drill a hole and solder on the XT 60 connector on the outside of the battery. now you can connect any external 36V LI-ion source and charge and use them in parallel. I get about 30KM range with 30 Li-ion cells in total. this wheel has some high quality parts. The battery will not degrade asfast if you use extra battery packs. I added a small saddle mounted bag with some batteries inside. I used cheap powertool 4AH parkside batteries with 3D printed holders and connectors.

      @@marcomazariegos Ok, thanks a lot for the tips! I guess putting it back together should also be doable :D . What has been your major problem with it, 5 times sounds like a lot :D Mine is almost new and makes some extra noise. The warraty stuff with banggood is a mess, so I´m considering of opening it up.

    • @marcomazariegos
      @marcomazariegos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@anttisokero5359 hi, mine was also doing a lot of noise but it was the outer bearings (the small one and the big one), I just cleaned them and add grease and good to go. Puting it back together is very simple, just hit the top from oposite sides so it is leveled, then use the screws to make the final fit. The noise, in my case, is beacuse I ride a lot in the rain and the bearings get rusted.

    Pre warning, front hub motors on bikes aren't always a good idea! The bike is designed to be powered by the rear wheel & powering it from the front wheel can damage: headtube, headset, forks and theres storys of them mangling dropouts. There are rear wheel versions about and if you can get one of them they're much better for the frame!

  • @goshty23
    @goshty23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice job. How large battery can this motor can take? Just to extend the range, not the power. 36v with 6Ah will be ok?

    • @reps
      @reps  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sky is the limit, you can parallel as many cells as you or the bike can carry to get a longer range. As long as you don't change the voltage by connecting more in series

      @goshty23 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    How on earth did you pry the first side of the motor cover off? I've got the same wheel and am trying to replace the controller, but am struggling hard to get the thing apart!!!

    • @cullenchase9161
      @cullenchase9161 ปีที่แล้ว

      Got it!! If anybody else is trying, there's a bit of glue around the seam of the top cover and the spot where the spokes attach. Scrape that out with a small flathead screw driver, then use that same screwdriver to slowly pry up from all sides. You can wedge it along the inside too and push against the edge of space where the battery goes. Then once you get a small gap, it's easier to pry off the cover like shown in the video. It took me almost two hours to get the wheel all the way apart though, just making a small bit progress at a time.

    I'm no e-bike expert but I've read that it's a bad idea to replace the front wheel, it technically shouldn't be a problem for motors under 1000W however, a normal bike frame wasn't designed to handle the added reverse stress put on it from the motor, this is especially bad if your bike is made out of aluminum, since if it does fail it'll just snap unlike a heavier metal such as steel which will slowly bend out of shape, so as you can imagine it would be pretty painful if not fatal to be going 20mph (32kph) and have your frame fail, so personally after learning about this I would prefer to avoid frontal installations or at least not do it unless I also add a brace to reinforce it.
    Aside from that I loved the video.

      Thank you! When trying to use the reverse gear for braking I already damaged the mounting holes ... :

      I've seen some kits that come with stabilising arms to give extra support to the centre of the wheel, the other end attaches to the forks.

      Just a word, I've had some personal experience with this.
      I've made some decently powerful ebikes. I would never reccomend front wheel drive for larger hub motors. I was a bit nervous seeing Marco install the wheel on a road bike, a fixed fork nonetheless.
      I recently got a more powerful controller for my bike, it was originally a 35a 48v controller, but I got a new controller running 80a at 52v.
      At those power levels you will instantly destroy normal bike dropouts, so I made a torque arm. Basically a wrench extending the force on the axle outwards. I installed it on the left axle, which had a hole in it for the cables.
      Not a good idea. I broke that axle, I'm getting a new motor soon but in the mean time I just installed the torque arm on the other side and welded the broken axle to the frame.
      As for hub motors, use torque arms. When you add regen braking into the mix, the axle will twist back and forth. So I highly reccomend the practice of epoxying the torque arms to you're axle to prevent it from twisting and damaging you're frame.

    Any idea why the original ESC didn't start the wheel from stop? Hall sensors are there...

      From what I have heard, there may be legal issues in some countries, where the motor is only allowed to act as a support. If it can start and go by itself, it might be considered an electric motorcycle and need lincense

    Hi Marco, I bought one but I want to change the ugly throttle through a 8 or 12magnet PAS. Is this (easy made) possible?

  • @TheFaeder
    @TheFaeder 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only bad thing of this design is that the front fork of a bike isn't designed to support so much torque, because normaly the power wheel is the rear one, but put a wheel like this on rear means your not being able to use the pedals anymore, and i don't think police would be glad for this mod! (not even for the engine without the pedal control anyway)

    Cool video; surprised it can be upgraded to this degree. Usually motor makers have the minimisation of material inputs required to meet the specs down to a science. Heat isnt your only worry; if your EMs overpower your PMs, thats another way to do damage.

    The rim should be laced in a crossed pattern, because radial spokes aren't well suited to transfer torque. hope your wheel stays true, but if you start getting problems feel free to contact me. not only am i a big fan of your channel but also do i build wheels for bikes by myself.

    I bought an Android phone for my i mortor wheel. Make sure it has bluetooth 4.00. But I have found, the wheel worked, without me even switching on my phone, so you don't need a phone to make the wheel function. You mainly need the phone app to switch gears, battery level, speed... The throttle/accelerator switch works to propel the wheel without the app. You have to start peddling first of all, get the wheel spinning before the motor kicks in.

    • @tecnogof
      @tecnogof 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sbturtle5345 Had it three years now, the original battery gives about half the life it used to have, but still going strong, I keep a spare on me, for when it gives out. I'll run it into the ground, I've got 6 fresh ones, in reserve. The Wheel itself has not given me any issues, I bought a spare one of those too, in case it breaks down. I use my bike for my job, so the thing must be reliable nd I like to have a plan B for if things go legs up. Three years, and the two batts I've been using are on their last legs, but still get me about. It ain't fast, but gets me where I need to get, and back home again. I'm surprised the wheel has lasted, it's been out in all weathers, thou I keep indoors cos I live in a city, and anything you leave outside either gets rusty or stolen! For me, it was the best purchase I;ve made in ages, I'm getting old and I can carry on working, not using all my energy getting to a job. I've very pleased with it...

    Hi Marco, i have bought this wheel in gearbest six month ago and the battery seems full charged but no lights on the panel with all connected.
    I have cheched the voltage of the battery and it seems that it's not the correct voltage.
    It seems that GearBest don't want to send me a new battery.
    I have seen in your video how it is dismantled but i don't know how check what's broken.
    Please could you help me?

    • @reps
      @reps  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What voltage are you getting from the battery? If you take it apart, you can measure every 18650 cell individually and they should all have an equal voltage. The sum of all voltages should be what you get from the battery output. If anything mentioned before is not what you see, you can buy a so called 10s BMS with balancing and new 18650 cells if needed. There might have been a cause of that problem somewhere else, that might be difficult to find ...
