      The system does not work.

    "You need to make sacrifices for the team!" What "team?" Every time management uses the word "team" it means they're trying to get you to ignore what they and you mutually agreed to. If you give in to their demands even ONCE they know you'll do it again...and again. Don't play that game. Give them a strong, forceful "NO!" right at the outset and stick to it.

      And NEVER explain your answer. Otherwise, you'll be hearing things like "there will be other plays to see your daughter in" or "your son will have more games you could go to".
      I learned a long time ago that giving them your reasons almost always leads to them telling you that your decision-making process is flawed.

    There was a story I heard of of a fast food workers boss telling them they couldn't have off for their graduation. Said he'd be fired if he didn't come in. He quit right then and there.

    I actually had a manager at Denny’s who wanted me to work after school. I told her I had color guard, which I was the captain of, after school. I only worked sat/sun.

    Yeah, so hire college students and young adults to host.
    You’re trying to get adult employee commitment at high school pay and a high school student should not be sacrificing school and athletics for a part time job unless THEY (on their end) need to.

      It depends on the job. If you could pull anyone off the street and train them in ten minutes, what's that job worth? What you do think the guy gathering up the shopping carts in a WalMart parking lot should be making per hour? Or the WalMart door greeter? Jobs with no expectation/experience requirements = minimum wages.

    I used to do scheduling and my boss would only hire college students for one position. I could not get it through his head why Monday to Wednesday we had no coverage on overnights 🙄

    The manager needs to consider why she's only able to hire high school students who have other priorities. Maybe she needs to consider what she's paying the hostesses or possibly hiring full time employees.

    My first job was at a papa johns, and there was a kid who had dropped out of high school to work there. I was in the band, and couldn't work Friday nights. They told me that I needed to be more like the kid that dropped out of school, and that he could come in whenever they needed him. I declined and stayed with my studies.

    With that kind of attitude, they're nothing. They're a manager and a bad one at that. It's the manager's responsibility to hire and schedule according to the needs of the business. It's not up to high school kids to make sacrifices for the "team"
    Also, the staff at someone's job is not their team. Stop calling it that.
