I understand what you're saying about not sharing your palette, but that's the frustration I always had with art school-all theory, no information about materials and how to properly use them. I do understand that your channel is about how to apply paint, which is already way more than I ever learned in school. So in addition to learning from your wonderful channel, I go to others on TH-cam to learn about color mixing and materials. I am 64, been painting all my life, and I never stop learning. Thank you for all you do, your channel is wonderful and very helpful.

A couple of other channels I love and that are super helpful.
      Chad Jacob's
      Draw mix paint
      Waddles world
      Our painted lives
      Ian roberts
      Florent farges
Painting the light along with draw mix paint are def the most instructional. Our painted lives has the philosophy that your teachers probably wanted to express but lacked the knowledge to demonstrate how to do so. He's a contemporary painter but former illustrator so he knows what rules to break and not. Great channels all around.

I was painting in my studio in Texas yesterday, and I found your video and watched and listened. I’ve been trying to learn all I can about oil painting since 2020. Your willingness to share your experience with a beautiful and multi-layered technique was quite inspiring. Also, I found what you said about focusing on painting during this challenging time to be just what I needed to hear, even a year after you made the video. Thank you for what you do, and I look forward to following your work.

The whole process, the underpainting, darks and lights, flesh colours, the blending, description of the volume and the importance of dark shadows to reveal the beautiful light, most absorbing in every aspect 👍

I have found your videos to be not just educational but also inspiring. I am fond of Caravaggio but more so Raphael. Your explanations have helped me as I view painting as not just applying oils, etc, to a canvas, but I am like a cosmetologist applying cosmetics and beautifying make-up to a face. Thank you.

I’m so glad I found this video because that’s exactly how I feel about it, as nice as it is to learn all the stuff they use and I will eventually learn how to make pigments and things, but the most important thing is for me to learn the way they painted instead of what they painted with them improve upon it with my own experiments, because I don’t have a teacher dedicating his or her entire life to teaching me how to do it since my pre teens, I’ve had to learn everything on my own since I was a kid..

This is beautiful. Thank you so much for this. I feel just like you about getting lost emotionally while painting. Also I have been troubled by world events lately, especially in that I have a medical background and knew instinctively from the start in early 2020 that something was very wrong. Now that I am retired from daily work I have more time to follow my love of painting and it helps greatly to take me towards creativity and beauty rather than the darkness of the "civilised" world we find ourselves in today. I will definitely and defiantly try this technique after watching you wonderful video and description. ♥ P.s. I have been experimenting with using the Zorn palette lately. I love simplicity.

    • @fayee8986

I do love simplicity. I find the condition of the world very troubling myself. I feel so helpless and what to do about it so I'm preparing myself spiritually that's the only way of Escape it's true God. Even though the art world has become dark and subject is trouble of some very pleasant to look upon. So I try to paint the peaceful and beautiful things only. God bless you and whatever you do success.

this technic remindes me of airbrushing, some artists paint the whole character with pencil black nd white then spray it over with airbrush, it helps to finding the lights and modulation of the face.

As an oil painter, seeing your tecniche is clear that you are more confortable with tempera, is not a bad thing but you lose some opportunities that oil painting gave like smoothness. As you said at the beginning, oil painting consist in moving color until you're happy. The setback is you need a lot of patience because it never dries. Is also very difficult to create details. Have you ever mixed both techniques to see if you can have the best of both worlds? Thanks!

Hi Antonis. I love your Channel SOOO MUCH! 🙏 this technique is kind of similar to how I work with gouache, though my work is more graphic/stylized. Can I ask about how many hours did this painting take you?? Like you, I would be in DEEP psychological trouble if I did not paint almost every day! 😁👍 I live in Brisbane, Australia, in a 1 bedroom apartment with my dog, which doubles as my studio. It is my biggest DREAM to live in Greece someday (I have never been to Greece , but I want to live on Kythira, not far from Crete). If I make it there (when covid finally settles down) I would love to visit you!! 🙏🙏 Thank you for your lessons. I learn so much. I would love some more help learning the gold leaf guilding process 🙏😉 kind regards, Mary. 😎

He wanted to preserve the brilliance of the white, while allowing the reddish earth to tint it. This enhances the ochres that are glazed over later.
If you glaze the ochres just right, the effect of a fleshy skin will appear.

Thank you, Antonis, for your skilled interpretation of Caravaggio's technique!
Do you see this technique only as a sort of values map to build on, or does that dramatic high-contrast grisaille continue to optically/reflectively influence the upper layers where paint is applied more heavily?

    • @PaintingtheLight
      @PaintingtheLight  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Mark!! Thank you for your wonderful question and you warm interest! We had a rough time, but here in Crete we have been safe! I hope you are healthy too!
I believe this technique works for both. I believe that the grisaille technic influences more the shadow areas of the painting than the light. Are you willing to try it? :)

I never found painting to be therapeutic (though it's my favorite thing to do in life!), on the contrary, it always gives me a headache and dry eyes because of how much attention it demands. But at the same time, when I'm painting, I go into a flow state (almost like a blackout), and I don't even register what I'm doing, why I'm blending the shades and how I'm approaching the brushstrokes. The next thing I know, I'm "awake" and whatever the result is, is the finished product. This is why I could never teach the subject - I wouldn't know how to teach it!
