A few years ago she did the 'sound-joined rooms ' at the 'singuhr gallery' in Berlin. Thus I had the extreme(!) pleasure to spend a few days with her, exploring the soundscape of that almost ruined church and it's surroundings using her music as a scout. And then, during the breaks of her performance, we were talking about John Cage, particle accelerators, Björk and Laurie Anderson. Such a pity that she has passed away in 2009.
Often categorized as experimental music, but this incredible experience goes beyond experimentation. This is far one of the most striking pieces of music i ever heard and experienced.
Decades ago, I had the rare privilege to help Amacher lug her equipment and help her set up a performance. The performance required my full body, just not only ears. How can we create permanent installations of her work? I have heard riotous stories about her, including her skill at sneaking into movie houses and so avoiding admission. Hoping someone has recorded those tales.
Heard this on the radio once, then had it recorded on a cassette, now long gone. Every time I hear it, it's completely startling - one of the most genuinely psychedelic things ever. Thanks for posting!
TOTALLY RADICAL AND POETIC EXPERIENCE!OH,WHAT A MISS YOU MAKE, YOU! THESE INCREDIBLE PERFORMER! TODAY,THIS KNOW-HOW IS LOST,FOREVER! THANK YOU,FOR THIS RARE AND PRECIOUS UPLOAD! CARRY ON,PLEASE!
If you are high: Do not go into fullscreen, look at the image, and listen to this with headphones on. you will most likely be scared out of bed. If you have done that, ask a friend for help. You will be okay no matter what you think.

So I've been reading in a bunch of comments that the combination tones don't work with headphones, which is not surprising, but I gotta say, with headphones this is morbidly creepy. As a piece of noise art, it has some real effect.
Listened to this q good couple of years ago with headphones and am doing the same thing rn and legit I dont think any piece of audio period has invoked so much physical feeling and anticipation in me before lmao. How should someone listen to this nowadays? Through speakers I guess?
@@beepboop7345 It is indeed meant to be listened through stereo speakers that are roughly equidistant from your head iirc. But yes speakers for sure. Issue is a) I own no stereo speakers and b) if I did this would still utterly terrify my family
@sohamsengupta6470 aaaaa suspected as much lmao. Could hypothetically get this setup but Im p sure Id either kicked out or get the cops called on me lmao
@jlin7788 There's a collected works cd on the Tzadik label, I think it's the last track. John Zorn's label. Well worth purchasing. She also turns up on the brilliant "Ohm: The Pioneers Of Electronic Music" compilation. Hope you track them down, ebay should supply.
Many users comment how unusual and beautiful this music is. How did you listen to it? All I can hear are horror noises. A portable speaker does not work for that, and headphones are even worse
It seems to hear it at its finest, it needs to be heard as an installation piece, with everything being precisely organised by her, down to number of speakers, where they're placed etc
hey, what is the picture of/who is it by? i did something very similar for an art piece when i was a school... if i'd known about this piece i would've investigated the artist...
If you have the image small enough that the centres are separated by same amount as your pupils (typically 57mm or so) then get as close to it as you can focus comfortably. Now try to fool your eyes into looking through the screen to infinity. Once you’re getting close to persuading your eye to do this you’ll notice a third central image appears, concentrate on that and you’ll see it has depth. The trick is easier to pull off if you can get the screen close to your eyes, so short-sighted people have an advantage. For those with normal vision, a pair of strong reading spectacles may help.
@khantarya Sorry Brother! I can did mean ''nostalgic'' ,right above! In fact, talk about this issue, brings to me,a very strong charge of emotions! Thank you a lot, again!''Shalom"!
You've got new york art exhibition DJ written all over you! using your fart?! So bold, So Raw, and yet elegantly providing us with the grounding humanism to accompany one through the halls of a surreal art show! when can you start?
And this ladies and gentleman is why my faith in humanity is lost.. you probably listen to spotify's top 50's all day long and that's why your fucking tiny brain hasn't developed enough to apreciate the experiment and trying new ideas to make music out of everything and anything ... omg i don't even wanna know how you got here and what you've probably written in other videos...
I feel like I listen to parts of every one of her songs and in my opinion she's never made anything even slightly decent. It's just noise. Not avant-garde. Just garbage
you should watch the video Adam Neely made, it explains a lot about the construction of the audio, and stuff about how she can manipulate the human ear into creating sounds just by using certain frequencies. It's crazy stuff. Don't get me wrong, I would never listen to this in my free time, but she is truly an experimental musician, but more of a scientist in my opinion.
Its mostly the ambience. This could be the soundtrack to a horror film and technically be the score. there are notes here, you have to listen for them.

All great music is experimentation
what does "goes beyond experimentation" even mean that's such a bullshit phrase

No. James Tenney Cellogram
Maryanne had a fantastic ear!
Miss her...
i don't know about her ears but her music was lush
She's gone? That's terrible.
Like a long sound corridor with unopened doors through which one guesses other voices and other rooms. Pure poetry in music !

fullscreen and cross your eyes until the hallways combine into one. then slide into the spectral abyss
What are the combination tones supposed to sound like? It's a whole lot of ambient sounds; how to tell which one is the ghost one? :S
Am I the only one who feels anxious fear in the endless corridor?
Music for when you dont sleep for 3 days
Seriously though, it's considered it's own sub-genre!
Thx !!! ++1

Haha definitely is, just took a little while to get!

Pretty easy to do stuff like this now.
