So essentially Hydra in an 'in-between' checkpoint renderer. If the scene works in Hydra it will port to other softwares and can be refined from there. It isn't intended for final output, it is a tool for porting to other engines. At least that is the general idea I'm getting from it.
Hydra isnt actually a renderer, Hydra by itself doesn't do anything. Its an architecture for delivering scene data between your DCC and chosen renderer. So for example your renderer (ie. Storm, Moonray or VRay) will have a Render Delegate (the bridge). Your DCC (ie. Blender, Maya, Houdini) will have a scene and send that scene data to your renderer using the delegate and your renderer will send the appropriate image data back to Hydra which will display it inside your Hydra Viewport. This is called interactive rendering you see your scene being rendered as you interact with it in the viewport. Final output or Batch Rendering is a different system which doesn't interact with Hydra. *Edit Looked into it a bit and Hydra is capable of dispatching final image renders. HdStorm does not though.
Idk where you hear it. Blender mission is only one sentence “to get the world's best 3D CG technology in the hands of artists as free/open source software”. So hell yeah they are trying to compete with the “industry standard”
@@nosirve9458 It is the "industry" that maintains the blender. So no, the blender's objective is not to compete but to innovate the industry as a whole.

This really separates the Blender community into two clear cuts: those who understand how absolutely powerful Hydra + USD is, and how amazing it is to have this integration; and those who don't understand that. People outside the industry really don't seem to understand what USD is and why it is useful. I started working on getting USD converted to Python 3 over 5 years ago so it could work with Blender. Since then, Pixar added Python 3 support, and Blender Foundation started integrating USD into Blender, but not at all in a production capacity. USD needs to be integrated from the ground up, and this is a step towards that. tl;dr: Blender artists: "it needs must be pretty to be useful." Pixar/industry: "it needs must be useful to be useful."
The BI started the integration of FBX in Blender over 13 years ago, and there are still over a hundred FBX functionalities missing in Blender as of today, so I would not hold my breath if I were you, a decent USD integration, let alone Hydra and MaterialX, will probably never happen!
As you said, is a good tool to 'check' if your stuff is done properly in the HYDRA frame work USD, so if you are sending things to let's say karma in Houdini' you can check how things are coming. I don't know if USD will REALLY become the standard, everyone seems to love it, but still there is a lot of stuff in between to account for, is not like magic format that understands everything, but is pretty good.
USD is the standart actually for mid and big studio. USd contains shaders, you can kick it from Maya or Houdini. Then Go to Katana to render your scene with an incredible speed. Big studio on LINUX only, then it means that you need TD's to kick USD from maya. Maya itself do not kick it properly, need script. That is all. If you can kick it from Maya correctly, it contains shad then everything is easy out of maya for rendering.
thanks for explaining this. I love blender and i have always used it for most of my works, so it is great to see it strive. I will even be having a blender tutorial in my college
Ha, I remember having one lesson of rendering in Blender 2.6 or 2.7 in the beginning of my college (and that was architecture) but it was a disaster haha :P The professor was an old Blender nerd and no one understood sh*t from the class. Tho now it's a completely different story.
I think the industry wants it so they can outsource stuff to smaller groups who can work in blender for free, and you're basically just paying them for some time. You dont even expect them to render it at movie levels, being able to work on stuff like even a mid level laptop if needed. Graphics seem to be taking a step back in movies, and they need to get more people working on projects as cheaply as possible. I hope it pulls off, it could be a great side hustle for many 3d graphic artists. Popping home to work on a more exciting project in blender without all the licence headaches or needing a super computer to render.
Outside of the USD utility, Hydra is indeed not a "render" engine, but rather a "preview" engine. This is more of a compromise between Workbench and EEVEE, where you can view animations with textured models, but with the performance of Workbench. VERY useful to work faster while reducing the electricity bill.
Hydra is not a render engine at all, it is a protocol that allows Hydra capable render engines like Redshift, VRay, RMan etc, to render the same scene from inside a single setup, just look at Solaris in Houdini for an example.
So, if I understand correctly, Hydra Storm is the new render engine added to Blender. This engine uses the USD file format, something which is getting use in the industry. Is that the idea?
yes, but blender again doesn't follow the standard, it can only import and export USD but not manipulate a USD file which is the whole idea of using USD.
Hydra needs a great USD support and Blender simply isn't ready for USD pipelines. The render engine is just showing that there'll be improvements on USD platform. Also USD support alone isn't enough to put Blender into a greater pipelines. All other software kits are already in the front. Blender is a bit late.

Import/Export Sucks in Blender, Working in Mobile Game industry its pain in the ass, while editing a pre-made animation in blender or Unity to blender workflow for animations is pain, while Maya handle it nicely
Yep. Interoperability and round trips. Seems like it is the beginners and the ones who have only used Blender who make the most noise and make requests for the next geometry node whatever and hype any new shiny feature as a "game changer", they don't seem to understand how important it would be to get the basics and fundamental stuff working properly before reaching for the stars.
Probably the way is structured, is very old, is relatively fast for modelling, or used to be.. but for complex VFX, Max is pain... worst than Maya.. for simple tasks is Ok, Max is a very good application when combined with CAD visualization too, at least until recent times is pretty solid and have lots of resources on the Architectural area, has a strong foot on that .
Well... you can do VFX with it but why put yourself to this torture? Max is a very very old piece of code in its core, which they try to teach a new tricks without rewriting the whole software, as a result we have some really ugly and strange construction which barely holds together. Working with it after you've tried some decent modern software is a real pain, I'm saying it as 20+ years Max user.
Looook, gosh I sound like an old man in my head. Look, we are the new wheat of the generation, we will grow and grow if we continue down this path. I can’t wait for what it has to bring for us dedicated artists. Our parents thought the day would never come for them to grow up and they are now the old ones in the industry. Who knew media could be so political even on the creative side:|
As a 10-year Blender user, I feel that Blender has become a bloated bunch of “must-have plug-ins” with an increasing number of OS dependencies. If they could have put even 10% of their now very ample resources into fixing the BGE, they would already be the industry standard for everything, and also be the go-to engine of choice for game devs and physics demos. Also, AI is rapidly making years of hard-begotten Blender skills completely obsolete now. If you wanna make Pixar movies using paid AI plug-ins, great. But if you just want have fun and make games (most people that actually download Blender), and actually feel like you CREATED something, it's just no fun anymore in my opinion.
Can the format that is made by Disney, the largest company in the industry, catch on in the industry? Only time will tell... Are you crazy? Of course it will... Also this industry is changing, nobody in my generation of producers really cares about what Disney and universal are using. As things like blender become more and more Future Rich, there's going to be more and more people who are shoes to spend $99 a month for Maya and 3DS... Especially as Nvidia keeps pushing their open USD format
Blender is a very cool community project aimed at a community of hobbyists, to pretend otherwise is just plain dishonest, Blender will never replace the likes of Houdini or Maya, or become industry standard, this video is clickbait, nothing more!

@@322ss no, blender is not playing catching up, blender focus on being a all around software, if it ever catch up to any software there is no need for the other software anymore

discovered it accidentally in add-on menu and tried several days ago. Thought it was someone`s joke. Still do. Maybe it`s for preview, but so is Eevee....
Eevee is a joke if you can't use it properly.
@@Lyper15 I meant Eevee is good for both, and I use it almost exclusively
@@descendinguniverse oh I guess I misinterpreted your comment. Have a good one!
@@Lyper15 thanks, same to you!
Its a tool set for an artist to use.
Import/Export Sucks in Blender, Working in Mobile Game industry its pain in the ass, while editing a pre-made animation in blender or Unity to blender workflow for animations is pain, while Maya handle it nicely
Yep. Interoperability and round trips. Seems like it is the beginners and the ones who have only used Blender who make the most noise and make requests for the next geometry node whatever and hype any new shiny feature as a "game changer", they don't seem to understand how important it would be to get the basics and fundamental stuff working properly before reaching for the stars.
can you tell us why 3ds max is not good when it comes to VFX
Probably the way is structured, is very old, is relatively fast for modelling, or used to be.. but for complex VFX, Max is pain... worst than Maya.. for simple tasks is Ok, Max is a very good application when combined with CAD visualization too, at least until recent times is pretty solid and have lots of resources on the Architectural area, has a strong foot on that .
3ds Max is actually good for VFX tasks, as a matter of fact its actually used in movies VFX. Scanline VFX uses 3ds Max for example btw.
Not updated at least 10 years. Software is full of bugs..
@@alexas8787 I guess you didnt even use the software but reply only what some cultists from the Blender community claim.
Well... you can do VFX with it but why put yourself to this torture? Max is a very very old piece of code in its core, which they try to teach a new tricks without rewriting the whole software, as a result we have some really ugly and strange construction which barely holds together. Working with it after you've tried some decent modern software is a real pain, I'm saying it as 20+ years Max user.
I still dont get it
Honestly
Hydra is the gateway to bring the USD format to blender
It's a clickbait video.
For me who exclusively uses an open source pipeline it really doesn't matter for me
He just rambles on and on, it's a click bait
Blender is NOT to become an USD-editor and will NOT use USD as native scene-graph-format.
I miss yafaray.
Everyone is talking about it
Eu que voltem a trabalhar na engine blander
you can share addons for stop motion? thank you
As a 10-year Blender user, I feel that Blender has become a bloated bunch of “must-have plug-ins” with an increasing number of OS dependencies.
0:23 Now i need to make this in Blender sometime when im more experienced.
Especially as Nvidia keeps pushing their open USD format
oh yes future rich!
Becuase it only works on linux
Blender is W
My Skill is Not
This is cause apple 🍎 will use USD for the reality projects
Somebody cares, since they are doing ddos attacks.
dont do that, use misleading titles
Blender users trying to cope nobody takes them serious becoming Apple of 3D software. 😂
You mean put every blender tool in a DLC store? and only £1000 blender mouse can make it work.
Pixar is boring. That's probably why
Blender is a very cool community project aimed at a community of hobbyists, to pretend otherwise is just plain dishonest, Blender will never replace the likes of Houdini or Maya, or become industry standard, this video is clickbait, nothing more!
I honestly dont care, i dont have a job as 3d so meh xD..
inspiration tuts using Ai for his voice lmaoo
So, time to kick out FBX then?
Hopefully this wretched FBX format disappears from our reality soon 🤞
Couldn’t agree more
TL;DR: Hydra is lower quality than Eevee
Looks like you don't understand what he explain. You are wasting your time.
@@w1-w2-w3 I just answered the question in the title. People don't speak about it, because it's not a shiny new renderer.
@@ajtatosmano2Well, you don't use hammer when you need a drill. And why should any average Blender user be excited, as they don't even need this new thing for anything.
Oh no, not you too... vocal frying is like a spreading virus! Great videos on your channel but...
He is probably sick
This super duper software still havent object visibility parameter like in 3ds max or c4d, and still not user friendly ui.
In future there will only be Unreal Engine 💪🏼 other engines can't compare
🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂😂
Unreal Engine is not a 3D software and can't work without it. So you can't compare it with 3D software.
You guys really think that all other softwares will disappear and we all going to convert into blender user!! 😅😅😅 please... I would like to see a blender release that doesn't come with comparisons to other software's. Please blender, surprise us. All you do is reproducing the work of others and make the lousiest noise about being better than everyone. I would really appreciate that blender fans stop misleading people, fooling new artist about blender being the best software ever. We have had decades of competition among various software's and each one brought something innovative. Blender keeps picking a piece of every great software and Blends everything 😂😂😂😂😂. Blenderrrrr😂😂😂😂 blends... 😂
I agree in parts to that, blender brought inovation that was copyed by the others, but to my students i never say blender is the best, no way, i love blender because all pipeline for learning can be made with it, but these discussions are always one sided, blender is a do it all software, it cant compete with a software that specializes in something. They all are tools, just that.
@@gillespedrozaleite5098"blender brought inovation that was copyed by the others" - like Blender sculpt mode stuff ain't 1:1 copying things from ZBrush and MudBox, like Blender came up with most of the stuff that has been in other 3D and DCC software for decades, like light linking etc. Blender is playing catch up, if one can't see that then better use other software for a while.
@@322ss no, blender is not playing catching up, blender focus on being a all around software, if it ever catch up to any software there is no need for the other software anymore
@@gillespedrozaleite5098Your opinion - but based on what you said, Blender is just like most of the other major DCC 3D sofwares - yet is missing many common features available in others. Don't take my "catchup" so literally - no 3D software is ever in static state unless it is no longer developed and no software is 1:1 the same as the other.
Is Blender Industry Standard? Well... if it isn't then nothing is...
