One of my favorite sketches from my favorite childhood show. I used to play sick and skip school just to watch Square One, 321 Contact, and the many other GREAT shows on PBS durring the late 80's thru 90's, I learned more about math from Square One than I Ever learned in the Hillsborough County Public School system.
Too right though I don't really see how this one's educational at all, lol. The definition of 'patterns' it gives is so nebulous as to be pretty useless. The most it says is "patterns exist" like okay awesome. But just like the best bits on sesame street, the learning can just take a seat while the comedy plays out. Because learning how to be funny is a lot more important.
There is SO much going on in this video. The Terry Gilliam-style animation ended by the Monty Python foot. The Beatles reference. Dr. Demento. The short line of music that Al used to wrap up all his polka medleys. Pretty much none of which I had originally processed when I saw this when it originally aired. My parents had the Beatles album that the "blisters" line was from; I don't know if I originally made a connection there, or if I just thought it was something musicians just said sometimes.
this was my first ever exposure to Weird Al, even though granted, I had no idea who he was back then. But of course I'm a huge fan so this is like amazing for me
I ran into this song back in my days of using file sharing programs. I had lost the mp3 over 10 years ago, but woke up this morning with the tune emerging from my memory. Kinda weird how that happens. But just to add to people's knowledge, there's a list of songs performed by Weird Al on Wikipedia which holds a plethora of song titles which many Weird Al fans likely would know little or nothing about. Keep in mind that while Al performed these songs, there are a number which he didn't write or were covers of other artists' songs.
I just had this flash of insight that Square One was prepping me to be a Weird Al fan with all their parodies. Lo and behold, he was ON Square One once.
this was a "music video" for an educational math show aimed at children...Square One. I actually remember watching this show and this "song!" I certainly feel old.
How does awesome stuff like this surface? Are they all just from someone who was lucky enough to have his VCR recording way back in the 90's and now it's found its way here?
LOL!!!! Wow!!! I forgot about this video!! LOL!! It's from a show called square one tv (a show that's a cross between a kid friendly math educational show and Saturday night live variety show. LOL!). It ran from 1987-1992 I think. great memories and a few awesome gems like this! Lol!!
when i was little i loved this show..... mainly for the sketch "Mathman"... but I was a weird al fan at that young age, and when i saw this i flipped out.... but now that im older... yeah... XD that was a nice trip down memory lane.... yet im now going to pretend it dosnt exist and go back to "Running with scissors" XD
Well, the liner notes of every "Weird Al" album you'd buy would list who played which instrument. So I'd know that's Tommy Johnson on Tuba. But I agree. He and Steve Jay look alike.

Love the Dr. Demento cameo.

Heh, same here.
Same!
Patterns done by counting the pixels
I oddly remember seeing this on a "Nick Jr. Rocks" bit in the '90s as a kid. Loved it as a kid, and I think this is what made me a Weird Al fan.

Nice cameo by Dr. Demento about 1:50 in.
Just found this priceless gem!
Wow! I LOVE this song, it's so awesome to see & hear it again, I've missed it so much since my childhood. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING!!!!!
I'VE GOT BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS
WOW!!!!!!!!!!! WOWEE WOW WOW WOW. what a trip.
didn't know Steve Jay played tuba...
and the foot at the end is very monty python!
So is the rest of it, kinda.
Dr. Demento in the background and a Beatles reference. Laying the groundwork...
Maybe it doesn't has to make sense but to sound funny, it doesn, doesn't it?
Nothing's bad when Weird Al sings it!
I remember this show from my youth... from my older years I see a Dr, Demento in the background.
Found myself singing this the other day for no particular reason, so I had to come watch it. So much more bizarre than I remember it!
This was my first exposure to Weird Al. I've been a fan ever since. :)
Ah, memories.
LET'S GO INTO THE BATHROOM.
From left to right, Al's Back-up Musicians were Joel Peskin (Clarinet), Tommy Johnson (Tuba), Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz (Drums), and Jim West (Banjo).
That is quite clearly Stephen Jay on the tuba.
I've got blisters on my fingers!!!
I just had this flash of insight that Square One was prepping me to be a Weird Al fan with all their parodies. Lo and behold, he was ON Square One once.
It's been years since I've seen this show and it was this episode that introduced me to Wierd Al's music.
I wouldn't be surprised if al was the mind behind everything in this video. Weird Al can do no wrong.
Wow!

this particular recording was hosted on the alcoholics website (notice the watermark).
But how did it get there?
You're probably right. It's an Al fan's VCR recording.
+Farzin F - That's Al-oholics Anonymous.
Dude. Square One TV was the BOMB.
this is the best weird al song ever
Never knew Weird Al was so surreal.
Always has been

So cool! Must’ve been nearly impossible to do back then.😂
I have a feeling besides the stage set the entire video was just a bluescreen.
My first exposure to Weird Al. Seriously.
rock that accordian!

12 years ago me, what were you thinking?! This totally holds up!! (What were you thinking about other things too, but that's differen't...)
How is it possible nobody is talking about the hilarious Beatles reference?
I read this comment right as the reference happened!!! LMAO!!! 🤣🤣🤣
When?
The closest I can come up with is when Al yells "I've got blisters on my fingers!" like Paul did at the end of "Helter Skelter".
@@Garrettk41 that wasn't Ringo?
Wow, this brings me back. First Weird Al video I ever saw.
Well, the liner notes of every "Weird Al" album you'd buy would list who played which instrument. So I'd know that's Tommy Johnson on Tuba. But I agree. He and Steve Jay look alike.
I saw this on Nick Jr. Rocks as a kid. I love it.
in case anyone is interested, weird al yankovic can be seen on the new 4 week abc musical comedy series galavant which can be seen sunday nights@ 8pm.
When the foot came down at the end in a British accent I said, "And now for something, completely different"
The accordion solo ruled!!
classic. a true rarity
I am only guessing but this must have been during the last 2 seasons of Square one TV.
That was awesome.
i have been a weird al fan for years
Schweet, i just now ripped this, converted it to an mp3, and put it on my Zune.
@Enchurito All Weird Al's rhymes are amazing =I
I saw the original broadcast of this when I was a child. Only now do all the jokes and pop cultural references make sense!
How did I never hear of this
It was sad when the weird al show was canceled
Was anybody creeped out when you saw his head surrounded by those shapes flying around like I was as a kid?
Wait! That's the monty python foot! Holy gosh!
Ummm Al, when I'm in the bathroom, I'm usually in there for more than just a shower or a bath.
Quality's really not bad for this old and something that was never released in HD or on DVD.
I haven't seen this in a while
Hard to believe he didn't get married for almost 20 years after this?
Square One TV was the shizznit!
Brings back the lime wire years
Say, didn't he appear in UHF?
I didnt know he was on square one tv
Only that one time
Apparently not, according to him.
SupercALifragilisticexpialidocious!
i hope this was used in schools
the reason why this song patterns isn't on any of his albums is because it was only recorded for square on tv.
Steve Jay on tuba. Is there anything he can't do?
@TakatofanAgain now that im older i see why they called him "weird" Al
Was that Dr. Demento there for a moment?
yep! he's a good friend of al
Hahahahaha.....I remember seeing this on a VCR in Math Class a looooong time ago.
Yup.
it all makes sence!
BOWLING BALL'S MAKE YOU FLY!!
well the music is clear
Weird Al's Polka Band.
Cute as shell.
Bell! thanks.🔔
Al es demasiado guapo para esto .-.
yeah...
1:44 Dr. Demento?
"WOW!!! HAHA!!! Look."
Omg yes
WOOOOW! HAHA! Look...
2:25 I was wondering why I was myself.
Why do I feel Terry Gilliam had something to do with this?
Yeah maybe
payola? are you the new messengers? well, lay it on me, moneybags! ha ha ha ha
My brain inmath class cause I have ADHD
I never said that its not funny, just said that's an awesomely bad rhyme.
"A polka meister like myself never has to be bored, I just grab my axe and play some patterns on my keyboard" has to be one of the worst rhymes ever.
This is odd..... but good nonetheless
This was me at my hedge fund interview.
between,not betwen,video,not vidio &lyrics not leyrics & comments,not comnts.
wow, jay on tuba and jim on banjo... didn't see that coming
the dancers are lame, but funny
im crying betwen the vidio leyrics and comnts i dont know wich is funnyer
which is funnier, not wich is funnyer.
