Hi Lucas, a very interesting system. My father was a book collector until he passed away three months ago. I have inherited a fairly valuable library of antiquarian and second-hand books. I am in the process of moving them to my house. I can't keep them all as some of the subject matter is not to my taste and I don't have the space. However, many of the books I will keep. My main problem is will I have time to read them all. It does mean I probably won't need to buy many more books in my lifetime. An odd situation to find myself in. If I were to add to my bloated collection the books would need to be exceptional. It's always good to watch your videos and I found this one most interesting.

David, so sorry to hear about your father.
You will have the problem and luxury of knowing you will always have more books to read.
Books are such wonderful life-companion objects - they outlast us all and transfer their own histories across people. I am sure the ones you have inherited and decide to keep will serve as a great keepsake. I have a shelf of books from my father that have made the trip to Australia and back twice, once when he moved there and then returned to Europe, then I did the same. They may eventually do at least one more leg.
      Thanks as always for watching.

The obligation to finish what one starts. Time is a valuable commodity, getting more valuable with more time.

This is a neat system for narrowing down books to read. I kind of do a bullet journal in a larger notebook and end of periodically transferring things from the pocket notebook to the BUJO. I do have a "books to read" section, but i like ur idea of filtering them and noting the multiple entries as a way of prioritizing.

This is a really great system idea. I will give this a shot because I feel like I always lose track of the suggestions I get, or I just impulsively buy books and decide later I don’t actually want to read them.

Let me know how it goes! Also just another great reason to use more notebooks.

Another great video. I have a similar system, write down the book / movie / product -whatever in my pocket notebook. Then transfer it to a master list. An additional step, because I'm crazy, is documenting the date I finished reading / listening / watching a specific thing on that list. THEN, every once in a while, because I'm extra crazy, I log that tracker into a google spreadsheet. I guess in my defense, we are what we consume (to a degree), and I have access to a lot of various memories because I remember when I read a certain book, or who I was with when I watched a specific movie etc.

Thanks for your comment and as always thanks for watching!
I like your idea of documenting the date you finish something as well. Makes you have to go back and interact with the list and notebook a bit more as well.
I must admit I am partial to a google spreadsheet too - I will try to keep lists to my notebooks, but when a list requires more columns than the two pages of a Field Notes will hold, spreadsheet it is!

Love these videos! I just recently started using the pocket size system for every day notes, mostly doodles. At this point I don’t keep it. Once it’s filled up, I check for anything that needs to be transferred and I throw it out. It’s literally scrap paper to me.
I don’t really journal but I do make notes of events in a diary. I use a 3 year system because I make so few notes. Works well enough for me.
My biggest “struggle” is how to carry it with me. My pants pockets are not big enough. Currently experimenting with smaller bags and pens/pencils.

I'm reducing (have already!) the number of books from about 3000 to 300. It is interesting that I use a similar system of lists, but in reverse. It is very hard for me to get rid of a book otherwise. The reason I did the reduction is because the Internet has more current information for my science fiction concept designs. The large number of books I had was getting in the way of my design work. Spending time researching was too much fun, playing around wasting time in my library. So, now I have approximately 300. 100 on the subject of art (how to, science fiction art, architecture references), 100 on philosophy of science (physics, biology, Karl Popper), fewer than 20 science fiction stories (I know that seems low), 20 astronomy/astrophysics, 20 futurism, and 40 on other subjects (cryptology, military, camping, mathematics, writing). 300 is the perfect amount of books for me. To keep it down to 300, what goes away next? . . . Then those go in for book credit to my local used book store.

Wow 3000 to 300 books sounds like a herculean task. All the books you've removed from your collection could make for a lot of space for notebooks!

New subscriber! Great video and system. Thanks for sharing. I’ve already watched it a couple times now. I’m going back to mostly analog capturing and writing and your channel has been very insightful and informative. I also have a love for Field Notes so it is also enjoyable to watch.

Greetings from a new subscriber in Finland. I found this a very interesting system which I want to try. I HAVE to get to grips with my book buying as I’d need to live to be 350 to read all the books waiting on the shelves. Look forward to watching more of your videos😊

This is a bit like what I do with albums i want to listen. I have a huge list on spotify, but will consider transferring it to a notebook, maybe adding notes on why, or the genre. It's a cool system u can apply to many things

Im glad to have discovered your channel. I too carry an EDC pocket note pad. With your collection of field notes notebook, do you have a way to determine each notebook (ex. Put title outside the notebook, "Book list").

Thank you for watching! I do not have any way to identify the notebooks, I just mark them by number so I know the order in which I’ve used them. That’s it!
