    I REALLY DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PLANTS
    To skip the intro go to: 3:20
    I've gotten a ton of requests for a plant tour video, so I've finally made a very shoddy attempt at making one; here it is!
    I do not recommend turning the amount of times I say "this guy", "these guys", "little guy" into a drinking game - you'll probably end up dead.

    Your plants oxygenate and clean impurities from your air all day long. Given so many plants in such a small apartment, you are probably breathing the healthiest air in town.

    • @matthewjames8052
      @matthewjames8052 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      That's not actually accurate. While interior plants DO add a sense of well being to many people (via psychological effect) they really don't "clean" the air or "purify" anything. Plants do convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, that's true. However, that process of photosynthesis requires a massive amount of light energy to do so. Interior plants are low-light plants, thus photosynthesize at a much lower rate than, say, trees. Also, when a plant is at rest (i.e., when its not photosynthesizing) it actually consumes the oxygen it previously converted. This means that it reduces the amount in the local environment. Its one of the main reasons you typically don't find large animals living on the surface below the canopy of a rain forest. Most either live up in the canopy, or reside in clearing spaces near water and such. There's a whole great deal more to learn about this topic, including the nitrogen cycle and micro nutrients, but that's for another time. I'm a horticulturist with 20 years experience in the field, as well as years of research with a local conservation institution in Houston.

    The yellowing is from overwatering/poor drainage. Rather than giving small amounts of water frequently, most plants want a thorough soaking once they are dry. Don’t pay attention to the amount of water. Just thoroughly soak until it comes out the holes. I water my pothos when the leaves droop. They bounce back within several hours and it helps me because I know I’m only watering when it needs it.

  • @CristalA392
    @CristalA392 5 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    The reason for your monstera being droopy might be due to not getting enough water evenly, you want to water it all the way thought and evenly so all the roots get water 🙃 but make sure you get rid of the water that might be left in saucer. A lot of the plants like this type of watering but don’t like sitting in water or they’ll get root rot👍🏼
    Also that plant in your bathroom is a dieffenbachia

  • @plantskid
    @plantskid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +263

    your bathroom plant is a kind of dieffenbachia!! also super sturdy plant but poisonous so if the leaves turn yellow don't just pick them off with bare hands or it'll burn you :~) also btw yellow & droopy leaves can be signs of Overwatering!! not underwatering!! so the terracotta plants, you gotta water them less, i'd say!! i would recommend getting a moisture tester from amazon that you can stick in the soil & see how dry/moist it is and if you need to water the plants again.

    • @CathrynDianne
      @CathrynDianne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Miriam when I don’t water my pothos enough, they tend to droop and then the older leaves start yellowing. I guess it goes both ways

    Just to know for you: The black plastic pots with the holes in the bottom are actually not meant as the only pot. All the stone pots are what i call it (in german) "over-pots". You put the plastic pot inside the stone pots. So you have drainage provided from the holes in the plastic pot but because of the "over pot" the water is not dripping everywhere (and its much more decorative). And in case you watered the plant too much you can remove the plastic pot and dump the water that has gathered in the stone pot. Also if you let them in the plastic pot its much easier to repot them, when they need a bigger pot. It's very hard to remove a plant from a stone pot compared to remove it from the plastic pot. I hope my explanation was okay. I find it really difficult explaining something in a language thats not my mother tongue...

    love all your beautiful pothos!!! I think the yellowing of leaves usually indicates that they are being overwatered. I've learned that from experience too lol. Also to avoid root rot, them having drainage holes at the bottom really helps, but i understand that it is a hassle to remove every plant and bring them to the shower. You seem to have something going that is working. Everyone's plant care is different and the bottom line is that your plants gotta be happy! Love your collection!

They are incredibly hardy and they are really easy to care for (they will not survive the teeth of a Labrador puppy if you leave the plant on a coffee table, however.) They have this fantastic color that really creates a nice change from the green green of the other plants.

    Do you grow microgreens or other edibles? If you can have such great success with house plants, why not grow some food indoors, since your growing season in Minnesnowta is July 15th through the 18th. I have lettuces, radishes, kale, hot peppers, and even a broccoli indoors. Then, last year, I planted turmeric in pots and brought them inside, and they are thriving and surprisingly very beautiful.

    I can't remember when I only had 64 plants. That was probably a few years ago and I know I don't touch the amount of plants that a woman here in NYC (Brooklyn) has in a one bedroom. At the time that I learned of her (a couple of years ago), I think she had over 300 or 500 plants. I went to the plant store that is right below where she lives and OMG... if I had more money I would put all of their kids through college with all the plants I would buy and the price ($$$ = pricey). Know that 64 plants is the tip of a small iceberg. Before you know it you will do a video when you have 100, then 150, then 200, and the number will keep going and going and going... welcome to the world of addiction!

    Variegated pothos and plain green pothos from the philodendron family, but not called philodendron. Monstera plant is most commonly called a split leaf philodendron.
    You might enjoy having a variegated spider plant which have variegated leaves (?) like the dracaena marginata, but is a hanging plant which produces lots of babies hanging off the mother, and are very easy to start the babies into new plants. It's pretty common and easy to find somewhere. I used to sell plants at Sears when I was your age (100 years ago).

    When I water I have two pitchers. One is filling in the sink or tub while I carry the other around and water. By the time that I am done with one, the other is ready. I am pretty good about knowing when the other pitcher is full, or adjusting the level of flow so I don't waste. Also, I try to rotate plants through the shower. One or two a week. I live in Colorado and it is a bit dry and dusty and the plants love to get in the shower. Note: I got a Labrador puppy a couple of years ago and my plant collection was cut in half by the little monster, so it really cut down the amount of time that it takes me to water. Also, I play music for the plants, especially when I water. I have no idea if this does the plants any good, but it does me good as I walk around the house.

    I wish i could have that many plants, but my apartment is too dark, no sunlight gets in. All the plants die immediately... :( but yeah anyways, great video, made me a bit jealous tho ;)

      Snake plants and Chinese evergreen do well ib low light, obviously not "no light" but if you get minimal light you can supplement with grow lights (they come in purple and white) those help a lot :)

      @@brookebannor3522 I live in a basement apartment (canada) and all my pathos strive but snake plants always died within a month, if not weeks, they need so much light! - ended up giving a dying one to a friend living in a condo but pathos just keep growing and growing!

    Dry leaves are usually an indication of overwatering... I tend to water my Pothos every 2ish week?? If that. Try cutting down on the water and I bet they’ll stop turning yellow! I love all your babies! Trailing plants are also my favorite :)

    If you would like a hardy and beautiful palm, look for a Trachycarpus Fortunei. There is one in my garden all year around and it freezes up to -10°C in wintertime in my area.

    Love this plant tour. I, like you, am not one for all of the fancy titles and this or that. I just love plants and do the best I can with them. I'm currently at 72.

    Plant lady goals. I would have so many more plants in my home, but most New Mexico houses are kind of designed to keep the hot sun out...so Pothos, lucky bamboo and Philodendron have been my longest running babies.

    You should turn your plants every now and then so the grow balanced. Plants will grow and lean towards the light. Turing them will help the grow symmetrical. Your palm may need a little Epsom salt sprinkled on the top of the soil.

    The reason there are holes in the bottom of the pot is that the water needs to drain and not sit in water. So If you don’t let water drain it will kill the roots or slow down the growth.

    Hi Hannah! I just found your channel a few weeks ago and I'm obsessed with all of your plant videos! I do, also, have a question. I've recently accumulated like 12 plants in my bedroom and some of them have been having problems with little nats / fruit flies -- do you have problems with those with your plants, and if so, what do you do about them?? I've tried natural insecticide soaps but nothing is working. Thanks!

    🌱 You have such a beautiful space and your plants are all stunning, I loved this video! I also have a ton of plants and I live in a studio apartment, it looks like a jungle. I did a video on my channel about great plants for dark spaces and small apartments because no matter where you are, or how small your space, you can still grow your own little jungle ✨🌱
