  • Can you hear the difference between a pianist who plays piano with emotion and without it? I In this video, I played 2 songs in 2 different versions. In the first version I played with emotion. In the second version I played the song without emotion. Can you hear any difference?

    The main difference I hear soundwise is timing... when playing "with emotion" how long you play a note or how fast you move on to the next one will vary by just a few milliseconds depending on which part of the song you are playing. I guess that's just because you are trying to give it a more natural artistic touch. The "without emotion" is the same notes but with a very rigid and mechanic timing, plus not hitting notes harder or softer either, it's all very plain. These are my thoughts after listening back to both versions with my eyes closed anyways. 😊

      I don't think you're the only one. To me there is a difference between "with emotion" and "without emotion", but it has a different meaning to different people. When playing the Chopin Impromptu Op.66, some people might want it to sound dry one time and emotional another time since this piece is kind of repetitive. In other words you can't be sure whether a piece has "emotion" or not.

  • @CrowandTalbot
    @CrowandTalbot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +97

    With emotion has changes in tone and softness that are not written in the sheet music specifically. Without emotion, the pianist is just hitting the keys at the right time with no additional input to the instrument. I find it a mark of a master to play with emotion and sound like that is the only way that piece should be played. But I think it is helpful for writing music to step through the music line by line so you can check when something feels missing or doesn't fit.

      you know what's really funny, that you didn't catch onto the fact that both times all his dynamics are exactly the same, he played it the same, that's the joke.
      There isn't a difference because he played everything identical.
      If you weren't pompous and so absorbed in your own "ooooh it's so deep, look at how much I can catch in music with my awesomeness" you would have noticed that.

      A musician with true skill can shatter your heart through song all the while laughing his ass off, a musician who only has superficial skill will need to resort to external tricks to tell the audience: "HEY THIS IS A SAD BIT!!!" XD

    • @deathbunny3048
      @deathbunny3048 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tuzki3248 Emotion exist in the subtle changes of tention from note to note or chord to chord, tention can be created tonally like 4th to 7th dissonant transition there's tention there cause finishing a phrase on a 7th doesn't sound complete, until you release the tention afterwards by finishing the progression to either a root note of the same scale or the root note of a different scale for example.
      You can create tention simply through volume or how hard you attack a note as well.
      Emotion isn't looking like a wet kitten while you play, emotion is subtlety.

    The emotion pours out of the notes of the music being played, not from the facial expressions of the player. People who criticise music of not having feels based on how overdramatic the musician acts while playing basically don't know much about music to make valid comments and also have never played an instrument.

      those are just the musical terms that describe his playing styles. Personally I preferred the less dynamical one to some extent. Many musicians play a piece to death with pretentious "profoundness" added to it that simply neither convinces me they see emotional value in the piece, or makes the piece more enjoyable. A good example of a musician whose main style is rhythmic and straight forward, yet carries an enormous amount of genuine emotion, but subtly, is glenn gould. Not to say turning dynamics to 11 never works for a piece, but I find it over used.

    i feel as though, even as they're very much the same, the emotional version seems to have inconsistent but subtle pauses inbetween notes whereas the no emotion seems to be very systematically correct in the pauses between each note, thus making it easier on the ears, although this may be me just reading into things with my eyes too much, they may be exactly the same lol

      but weird... i dun know much about piano but the sheet itself will have different demand on the speed and pause...
      so if he's playing it 100% correctly, regardless of with or without emotion, it should sound the same? or else it would be different from the sheet, not plying it wrongly i would say but the player must hav add his own element...

    • @simonhisted2840
      @simonhisted2840 6 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Dylan Tan no one really plays a piano piece (song) 100% correctly, the really good pianist change the counting and cheat by a half beat at most. adding an extra half beat to the count would add an extra pause. The difference between the emotion and non emotion are that you hear more of these added beats.
      Btw adding the half beat isn’t a bad thing, in fact if you do it in the right spots your music sounds 10x better.

    I can tell a difference. When you play with emotion, you tend to speed up, slow down, emphasize, or minimize different parts of the music. When you don't, you're simply following the sheet music, no emotion, no variance.
    When you play with emotion, you can show people what the piece means to you, or your own interpretation of what it should sound like. When you don't, it's not as interesting--it might as well be played by an player piano.

    • @abijo5052
      @abijo5052 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i breathe air I’m a keyboard player and trombone player. Trombone is similar to piano in the fact that it’s obvious and easy to see how emotion matipuoates the tone ( subtle dynamic changes, timbre changes etc). But interestingly keyboard needs just as much emotion- it can feel stiff and electronic or natural and beautiful depending on how you play the same instrument, same dynamics (even with touch sensitivity off).
      I feel it’s because of subtle articulation. A common keyboard technique is ‘taking breaths’ - leaving small gaps like you would on a wind instrument or voice to emphasise phrasing and give a natural sound.

      well any certain interpretation isnt just following the notes written, you follow the composer who made it up with his soul, still better than just transforming the piece into another version because you can destruct the orginal meaning. If you really want to play with emotions you have to create your own music or variations.

      Anne Briones I think it’s because of two reasons- the first is that the notes are played in a smooth way, like the waves of the ocean lapping against the shore, especially in the left hands harmony bits. And the second reason is that some notes are played much softer and subtlety which creates a delicate and emotion evoking piece.

    Mr.Vinheteiro plays with emotion,in both situations.Why?because you can't learn something and in fact,in perfection,without loving it!And feeling it!..He loves music for sooo long,as a loving married couple...that he doesn't have to be emotional!😊...Do you get me?😉We love you "Lord",keep going🥰Stay strong and safe all of you💓🇬🇷

    As a musician, I can say that the difference between emotion and no emotion is obvious. Music without passion sounds lifeless and empty.

      Yup. Exactly. Not a great musician or anything, but the one with emotions seemed to differ and sound less robotic or systematic than the first one. I liked with emotion better

      I hope you haven't abandoned logic. The pieces that he played were the result of extremely good brains that the composers possessed. Not some emotion shit.
      And what the fuck does lifeless and empty even mean. Those words can fool a rundown schmuck but not everyone

    I’m so glad I shut my eyes the first time around, to hear the difference. It’s interesting to first hear it and then see it. And, wowzers, the stare! 😂 And while I learned to play without looking (blindfold yourself if you’re too tempted to look) when I just play the chord progressions when someone sings accompaniment (my iPad would often freeze or glitch or shut down unexpectedly so I often just tried to memorize it; it was way safer!), when I’m actually playing involved music, there’s just... no way. No way. Maybe in 30 years. I’m hoping.

    Acredito eu que a emoção não se manifesta na expressão facial ,mas sim na dinâmica ,onde o músico tem que ter a percepção de onde deve se conter ou se exaltar , tanto no ritmo quanto no volume ,essas nuances sutis que compõem a emoção da música !

    I actually like the versions without emotion better o.o
    The notes & phrasing sound cleaner and warmer for some reason 😅 I suppose because he would've had to focus more on playing the right notes since he wasn't looking at the keys & you can get swept up in emotion physically without it actually translating to the music

    • @spiderfan1974
      @spiderfan1974 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Jacqueline His playing was more consistent "without emotion" every key was more or less played with the same pressure the tempo was laser like consistent. "With emotion" he kinda just rolled with it a little out of time oh well. Hitting the keys with different pressures oh well. It works the same way on guitar.

    • @profozpin227
      @profozpin227 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      spiderfan1974 Sorry, "out of time" in music actually means rhythmically incorrect, and I can assure you he was rhythmically correct both times. Without emotion, the music isn't even music anymore. It's just notes.

    • @spiderfan1974
      @spiderfan1974 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CoolGuyVR You just don't get it playing with "emotion" you're just playing you are not counting the beat that strictly. There is no thinking about the next chord. Your in the "pocket" so what you practically took the guitar string off with that attack making that note way louder than the rest. So what if you came in a little late on that solo or start of the rythm. So what you missed a note or three or even picked/played a few clams it sounded great. That's playing with emotion.

    • @profozpin227
      @profozpin227 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      spiderfan1974 No, it's not. There is a difference between "out of time" and "playing with emotion". The latter is drastically more subtle. I would know, I have been a musician for about 8 years now.

    • @spiderfan1974
      @spiderfan1974 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CoolGuyVR And I've been playing instruments for over twenty years now. Are we in a dick measuring contest? If so I win. There are no rules in music, they're more like guide lines. Besides rules are meant to be broken. So I'll use your faulty logic I've been a musician for over 12 more years than you. Ergo I'm right your wrong grow up.

  • @puritadrinkingfountain5143

    It's weird because when I play with emotion I'm mainly just staring at the keys and subtly smiling to myself because I'm so focused but this guy knows the song really well so he's really playing it out for us
