When I bought both the ships I have from Diamond Select they were selling off their remaining stock. Now you can't get those Diamond Select Star Trek ships for any less than $225 USD or more.

The tos seems like a retool, but the enterprise -d seems like a new mold. The original never had saucer sep. The deflector dish is different as are the nacelles slightly different. Even the neck has been redesigned to have a more accurate impulse engine. Even though it is more accurate in shape and placement the still slightly messed it up being fully recessed. Had they put a slight housing around it it would have been perfect

@cardboard_cave that's so very true, funny tho I was a little boy and I remember all the stores that are now long gone, Kmart, woolco, zellers, towers department store, Macy's, just to name a few off the top of my head.
If I got this toy I would go back over it and repaint the entire thing and fill in the screw holes but the lighting on it looks solid to bad the impulse engine doesn't light up.
I wish somebody could sell 3D printed screw hole covers and a dorsal phaser array piece that pegs on over the screw holes. Those mods alone would significantly improve this toy.
I love the D, but there are a lot of screws. That and the bottom of the saucer is completely bare except the registry. The escape pods aren't painted neither is the phaser array. I think the original playmates did. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the comment! It really does seem they didn’t plan on anyone displaying this where the underside could be prominent. I think most of us would have paid another $5 for some paint on the underside. I’m still very happy with mine on the shelf though.
That’s a nice ornament, any idea if they ever made a golden one? I have some special edition Lionel train ornaments from hallmark and gold just looks special as an ornament.
I would absolutely have loved a saucer separating Enterprise D when I was a kid. As it is, I took the screws out of the original when I was a kid, but it made the saucer separate at the base of the neck. It just wasn't the same.
When I was a kid I once got an air freshener with an Enterprise top on it which was all I had as a model for a while, and over time I carefully cut away at the separation plane so I could have a detachable saucer and then could Blu-Tac it back on. Then ten years ago I bought the large Diamond Select model that includes built-in saucer separation and I love it.
@@ProtoKun7 that’s so true. I may be biased, but I feel like the Star Trek universe ships just aged so well and look better as models than most other sci-fi properties.

3D scan the underneath and use Blender to add the detail for stickers and windows and use the 3D printer to print a more detailed under section. Use a 3D painter to spray the detail and add fiber optics to the circuit board for the windows. I notice the big windows at the bottom were low detail. You can print out the landing feet and set motors to new board to show the legs lower and raise. The new screw holes would have detailed pieces to cover the screws. Really nice. I have the older 1701-D.
Nice review. As a lifelong trekker since the 70s with all the 90s Playmates releases and many DST, I agree this release is a nice low cost option. Given its low cost, it would be a great base for modding. So, I had the original years ago. Yes it had the stickers, yes it had a red deflector dish (COMPLETELY wrong though), but I’m pretty sure it had the LOWER PHASER STRIP on the saucer…. Like helllloooooo playmates….. it could’ve helped hide the screws too since that’s right where it should be. 🙄 IF I end up getting this one, I’d be doing some of my own paintwork. Like the rest of the windows on the forward half and underside of the drive section, neck and lower saucer. Impulse engine, shuttle bay doors, and paint my own phaser strip.
From seeing a lot of the comments on here, I’m realizing playmates did a good job with the mold and plastic quality and lights (it just feels good holding it), but they did some of the painting/finishing details worse than the original models. Not having those originals, I was relieved by the overall quality of this one, especially with the price being a bit less than the old ones after counting for inflation, but I can see why expectations were high considering this is the third similar model they have done.
@@cardboard_cave I guess I sounded like I was nitpicking, but they definitely did some things better with this release. Lighting, (deflector looks more the part and actually lights up). I’m pretty sure it was ONLY the engines on the old one, and they were removable. There were NO windows painted, the saucer did not detach and there wasn’t a base. The one thing I wish they had kept from the original was the going to warp sound and you could rapid fire the photon sound, which I may have eventually wore out as a kid. 😂

Many others have commented they feel it lacks compared to diamond select, especially the underside which sadly is unpainted. However considering what the diamond selects cost now, I’m very pleased for $39.99.
Ok ship but i feel a downgrade from the original. The screws are pretty bad but the utter lack of paint on the underside makes it look completely unfinished.
I do feel it looks better in person than in video, it looks less washed out in person for lack of a better word. But I didn’t own the original to compare it to.
I still have my enterprise D from when I was a kid. I had almost the whole line, but I agree the original from the early 90s seems beefier and little better.
I had the original version with detachable warp engine nacelles , , trust that the new one is actually far better with tech newer brighter LEDs , , at some point I WILL aquire one of these new ones , , ,
I have to wonder.. was there supposed to be a lower phaser array that just plugged into all of those screw holes? _Because it's just not even there._ How do you just _miss_ that? How did _anyone_ miss that? It's a direct callout on the packaging, and the packaging is actually accurate, because it's just not there at all. The complete lack of literally any paint on the underside makes me think that someone seriously screwed up the production line, and they just _forgot_ that the ship has two halves.
What’s funny is the back of the box even calls them phaser arrays, but even on the back of the box it’s clearly just screw holes. For that matter, nowhere on the box does it show the stand. It’s rare you get more than the box shoes.
Honestly to be $40 it's very good and decently detailed, tho, the fact that it has so many screws it just breaks the deal for me but I would still buy it as a cool toy to have honestly. Keep it up man!
While I'll probably be skipping this(I honestly have enough Enterprise Ds in my collection, never thought I'd type THAT), I hope this means that Playmates is going to pick the ball Diamond Select dropped and release a wider variety of ship. The C, Nebula class, Neg'Var, etc. Hell, they should have done the Protostar with the Prodigy figure line. While I know that the TOS and NextGen Enterprises will always be the staples of the franchise and the toy line, but if the last 10+ years of Eaglemoss have shown, there's a definite market for the other ships.
I'm sure after the amazing year the shows have had(Picard, SNW, Lower Decks) that they realize that the fandom is still going strong and with that comes a desire for merch. As a great man once said, "Shut up and Take My Money!"
It's so weird that the 1992 version managed to look 100x better than this. Like why did they just give up on painting the bottom, the cut off of window detail by the deflector is striking, and how smooth this is compared to the texturization of the original.
the stickers on the original version looks now after those years really awfull on my display, glad playmates made them now all printed on. Also the clear stand looks much better then the original, i already play with the tought of replacing my old one with THIS ... hope they also re-release the DS9 station !
I have 3 Enterprise D starships one original one with lights and sounds one from Star Trek Generations this is exactly the same ship except one awesome difference this saucer section separates my other 3 do not
@@cardboard_cave Yeah that was all because of Picard in the third season. I like how they tweaked it and brought it back originally the Enterprise D crash landed on Veridian 3 in Generations and couldn't be salvaged Jordi Laforge now the curator of the Starfleet Museum said thanks to the prime directive they removed the saucer because they didn't want it to disturb the system and he's been restoring it over the last 20 years at the fleet museum. The warp nacelles and secondary hull came from the USS Syracuse. They used it to stop the Borg and rescue Picard and Beverly's son Jack The Enterprise D was the only starship not tied to the mainframe and couldn't be stopped by the Borg interesting plot line for the story if you ask me.
@@rsanchez4566 I believe they were very reasonably priced when they were in production, they’re just not making them any more so eBay sellers have adjusted prices accordingly. I hope they begin selling them new again.
Cool toy for sure, but im going to say something controversial and state that the '92 version is just as good as this newer version. First, I like the sound effect package better on the original. Impulse, warp, phaser and torpedoes. I couldn't care less about the computer noises or the alert, or the voices that don't sound accurate anyway. And, you dont have to cycle the buttons to get to the desired sound effect on the '92 version. Second, one thing I always hated about the '92 is that the saucer didn't separate. This new ship fixes that finally, but the parts of the star drive section and the saucer section that are revealed when you pull them apart are butt ugly. Any true star trek fan or just a fan of the galaxy class ship would be so put off by the ugly design and lack of detail that they would leave the ship in its combined form. I've built the AMT/Ertl hobby grade model of the galaxy class enterprise, so for me, what they've done with this ship to accommodate the saucer separation gimmick is not worth it. Finally, the lighting on the new model is great, but by lighting up the navigational array, they changed the design so that it doesn't even look like the navigational array from the ship on the actual TV show; something the '92 version did a much better job with. I'd gladly skip some lights for a little more accuracy. As for the stand, meh. I've had my '92 Galaxy class ships for decades and I've gotten used to them just sitting on their bellies. Thanks for the video and the review. I'll most certainly buy this newer version, but I see it as an addition to the galaxy class toy lineup, not the definitive replacement of the original...
I don’t think it’s controversial at all. When inflation is taken into account, this new ship is cheaper than the ‘92 version and includes more features. So it makes sense that it’s not as nice in certain areas. For me the ideal ship would be the light features and stand of this one, but the design of the 92 ship. Though I’m sure they’d have charged a bit more. Having never had a ‘92 ship, this one is a bargain for me at $39..99 brand new.

Ok it looks terrible compared to my Art Asylum NC1701D! Art Asylum models are a bit hard to find (and will almost certainly be used if you do find them), but they are model quality ships you can actually handle without breaking or damaging them. Looking at sold listings on eBay, those are going for $150-$200 loose/preowned, and over $350 new. Sadly I don’t think I can even compare that to a $40 toy. However if they ever bring them back for regular retail price, I could see that being a very real choice compared to the playmates one.
@Michael, I agree, I am so glad that I never damaged my Diamond Select Enterprise D , thequality is way better and with lights and sounds, not to mention that the time of it's release , they (Diamond Select did a good job of covering the screw holes
Yeah, downgrade and upgrade. This sleek design is tempting, but it's missing features. Playmates needs to step up their game and for $40 it's a $30 buy at best. Too much to say on here, but Playmates needs to release a second generation of this re-release or they need to give up the license and rights to diamonds select toys who will make them right.
It certainly doesn’t feel like garbage to me in person, far from it. But I have learned that Star Trek fans expect far more than I realized from Star Trek toys, compared to other toy fans. But maybe that’s not all bad. It’s because there’s been so many great Star Trek toys over the decades, and many of them are still reasonably accessible now.

@@cardboard_cave def lights up better then diamond select. most consistent
I am going to pretend the screw's are phaser cannons instead of phaser bank's.......The end 😁👍♥️
The little windows don’t light up?
The ones on the very top of the saucer do. All the others are painted on.
I hear they wanted to make an Oberth class toy but it kept blowing up..snicker.
ITS MISSING THE RED STOP LITE ON BACK NECK OF SHIP
I believe what you’re referring to is there, it just doesn’t light up
Ok ship but i feel a downgrade from the original.
I certainly hope so too, I’m sure it depends how well these do. Is there still a market for Star Trek toys? There is with me.
I'm sure after the amazing year the shows have had(Picard, SNW, Lower Decks) that they realize that the fandom is still going strong and with that comes a desire for merch.
As a great man once said, "Shut up and Take My Money!"
hope they do a voyager
Me too!
When is playmates going to start making the strange new worlds Enterprise.
That would be awesome. I know it was leaked that they are planning to do strange new worlds action figures, so that’s a start.
Also the clear stand looks much better then the original, i already play with the tought of replacing my old one with THIS ...
hope they also re-release the DS9 station !
noice
Totally no detail on the underside of the saucer section. No windows or escape pods painted. Big fail!
I have 3 Enterprise D starships one original one with lights and sounds one from Star Trek Generations this is exactly the same ship except one awesome difference this saucer section separates my other 3 do not
I think if this ship came out in the 90’s people would have been over the moon about it, with all its functions and overall design.
They got a few things wrong with this but overall it's a nice toy.
For the price it's pretty enticing. I'm not sure which is my favorite enterprise it's either the D or the A.
I don’t think there’s a better Enterprise D toy/model for the price range, not that there’s that many options right now anyways.
I got my diamond select one for $60? It’s pretty sweet. So is the Klingon bird of prey. I got a custom display stand for the d.
This version is sleeker than the original version so less fat saucer and nacelles. As for the rest, it is what it is, and whatever.

Went to edit my comment and it's gone. Did something I said violate the rules of your comment section? It wasn't my intent to cause offense, just state personal preference. I apologize if I said something out of line.
I certainly did not delete any comments. I’ll check to see if it’s stuck in TH-cam limbo.
I don’t see the comment anywhere, I’m sure it was just a glitch if you’d like to repost it. I never saw it so I wasn’t offended lol.
I've seen vids on other channels where weird things have happened to people in their comment sections.
Just now I looked at the comment count and the number of visible comments is coming up one short, so that's probably mine.
I appreciate you responding to let me know I hadn't caused offense/ done something wrong.
@@MRF1983 No worries. I’m extremely rusty at TH-cam, just now found out how to turn on notifications so I know when someone has commented on a video. It was frustrating because I love comments, and TH-cam never notified me. So I just had to skim my past videos for comments.
Ok it looks terrible compared to my Art Asylum NC1701D! Art Asylum models are a bit hard to find (and will almost certainly be used if you do find them), but they are model quality ships you can actually handle without breaking or damaging them. Playmates is child grade toys, unfortunately.
If you were to compare this Playmates Enterprise D to the Art Asylum Enterprise D, you would find that the Art Asylum one just blows Playmates away... yes, they are that much better friends! Just saying.
Hope it's not screw happy like the TOS Enterprise.
Heh, it’s quite a bit more screws than the TOS one, unfortunately.
Nope, that underside just looks so unfinished, puts me right off i'm afraid
I desperately missed the Diamond Select Toys version.
Damned biological mom!
Too bad you couldn’t compare to the vintage Playmates version
It looks cheaper than the original
Yeah, downgrade and upgrade. This sleek design is tempting, but it's missing features. Playmates needs to step up their game and for $40 it's a $30 buy at best. Too much to say on here, but Playmates needs to release a second generation of this re-release or they need to give up the license and rights to diamonds select toys who will make them right.
I would be very disappointed. From the screw holes, to the color of the hull to the deflector dish and the light leaks. For $40. It's garbage
The original from the 90's has better detail
It’s pretty bad compared to the diamond select models
Do you know how much the diamond select models were when they came out? Now they’re crazy expensive on the aftermarket, but I’m curious how the original retail price compared to the $39.99 playmates.
Enterprise D I think is one of the worst looking of all.
👎
Looks great! Good review, any word if we will get a new Romulan Warbird?
I sure hope so, so far I haven’t heard anything, but it would make sense as long as these are selling well.
Dude, grow up
