    • @ronclark9724
      @ronclark9724 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      A small window air conditioner isn't all that expensive that will keep at least one room cool and comfortable. You could just turn it on during hot days, at least for a few hours in the evening when you return from work. Probably won't increase your power bill a hundred quid for a few months during the summer, and the small window air conditioner probably wouldn't cost more than a few hundred quid that will last at least ten years. Think of the air conditioner as a long term home improvement investment. I can't live without a air conditioner in Texas as my hamster requires cool temperatures not too hot and not too cold...

    Beesleys, it's true that we Americans love ice. However, for the home there are "four" ways of getting it: 1) buy it in bags.........2) refrigerator w/built-in icemaker.........3) countertop icemaker (I've never owned or seen one up close, lol).........4) or good ol' fashioned cheap "ice trays", they work just fine unless you wanna buy filtered water cubes in the bag). I just wanted to remind you of the inexpensive ice-trays option. Great channel! 👏🏾

    • @JustMe-dc6ks
      @JustMe-dc6ks 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      Yes. They get so hung up on the “American fridge” with the ice and water dispensers. Americans had ice trays since home freezer became available. Then automatic ice makers in the freezer, which have been nearly universal for many decades. Followed in the 70’s by the ones with a dispenser in the door. And now we’re in the future with stand alone ice makers, and kitchens with umpteen different special water taps for filling pots or on demand hot for beverages or ramen.

    • @bluflaam777LSA
      @bluflaam777LSA 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      I use a pitcher that filters water and use that to fill my ice trays. Then once a day (or when needed) empty the trays into a bin that's also in the freezer. The only time I have to buy ice anymore is during the summer when we just go thru' it faster than the trays can make it, or for family gatherings/parties when we have a big group come over.
      Short story, ice trays work great!

    Yellowstone was in my back yard growing up. 90 minutes to the gate, 45 minutes more and I could be sitting on the patio eating ice cream and watching old faithful. If you look at the square KM it is just shy of 9000. That is large but most of that is forest that unless you are a hiker can not be reached. There are several roads that enter the park, most famous being the West entrance on the Montana side (the reason everyone thinks Yellowstone is in Montana when only a sliver is located in that state, same for Idaho) Once you get into the park there is a central ring that goes to various features around the park (hot pots, geysers, rivers and lakes etc.) There are hotels in the park that you can stay at and while you can travel most of the distance in a day without stopping. To get a good look around plan for 3-5 days, staying at both the central and north ends. There are a large number of trails that can be walked at various pull outs and stops along the way. Winter travel is also possible with snow coaches and one of the hotels hosting winter guests. The park its self takes up maybe 5% of one corner in Wyoming, but is surrounded by National forest and government land in 3 states with a pretty low population lending to the image of a vast unoccupied area.

    Hello from Tennessee. On your next trip you might try a motor home, you can rent them in the states. Two Brits recently did this on their US trip for their YT channel.
    Gravy...you are making a roux. Oil, flour, then add milk. If you fry bacon or sausage, save the drippings in a jar in the fridge. Use this as your oil. Now this is critical, do not add milk until the flour starts to really brown and the flavor smells so good throughout your house. Now add your milk, whole milk not less fat Milks. Using the flat of a large spoon or a large whisk, begin whisking immediately. You cannot stop whisking. And make biscuits. We make gravy from the drippings if fried chicken. I use this gravy as a dip for my fried chicken.

    I was born and raised in Texas and my parents and grand parents did without AC. They just didn't want to pay the electric bill for it. It was brutal. I would go and visit my grandfather and he would be sitting in his living room, smoking cigarettes, drinking hot coffee with a fan blowing 110 degree air on him. You can get used to it but it's never comfortable.

    The biggest trick when buying perishable items at an American grocery store is get it from the bottom or that back because the oldest items are always on top or in the front. Another thing most of the time the use by date is just a suggestion, most things are good for 2, 3 or even 5 days later. Like milk doesn't magically go bad on the expiration date. Most times I can use milk 5 days past the expiration date. I just smell it.

So you're right. As for ice, depending on the size of your freezer, you can do what a lot of us do...we get ice trays, stack them and just refill as needed. Always have ice on hand and no big bags taking up room, if you have even a little bit more room, you can get an ice bin to fill up giving you eve more ice on hand and saving you a lot of money. Keep up the great work, so glad you enjoyed visiting the US and hope you get more chances.

    It has a single tube with an internal separator, which both exhausts to the outside and gets fresh air. It does not need a tube for condensation, even in this high heat & humidity area. Rain does not get inside.

    I have some experience with countertop icemakers now, and they have 3 problems:
    1. They require regular cleaning to extend their functionality; they need a light bleaching to kill fungus and bacteria and they need a vinegar soak to remove mineral buildup (scale). You'll need a toothbrush for scrubbing and make certain the icemaker gets a thorough rinse and draining. There are videos on cleaning icemakers.
    2. They tend to die between 6 and 16 months of operation, so you must be ready to replace them.
    3. They aren't inexpensive. They start around £60 and go to about £90 in the UK.
    I have one because I don't have enough freezer space for ice trays. If you have the space, get ice trays and an ice bin to put in your freezer to make and store your own ice. Or purchase a small freezer unit to expand your freezer space; it's cheaper over the first 3 years than buying new countertop icemakers.
    If you visit the US again, try Seattle.
    An hour from Seattle is skiing or mountain hiking. Another direction and you're in the Olympic Peninsula rainforest (35 minutes by ferry from Bainbridge Island, across the Sound; faster than driving). There's tourist boats to go see whales and maybe orcas, though orcas show up in Puget Sound and you may see them while taking a ferry or water taxi out from Seattle's water edge.
    Your discussion of how different the US is short distances from various spots put me in mind of this.
    It's the snack foods that get us, doesn't it?
    You need Goldfish crackers, and I need Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps.

    Regarding seasoning, when I first moved out on my own I bought a few jars of various herbs and spices and just read on the jar what they are good with and experimented with them. Nowadays you can do a google search and find charts of which herbs and spices go well with what foods. Start with a few basic ones (like basil, oregano, dill, cinnamon) and you'll soon learn what you like (and don't like!). Then you can expand to others (like tarragon, allspice, nutmeg, cumin) and repeat the process.

    Not sure of price of ice, but we have an ice maker in our fridge, but we don't have it hooked up (no line near it to hook up), so we just buy bags of ice. We have a deep freezer to keep a few extra bags in there and just dump them into our ice dispenser to have ice all the time. But if it's somewhat cheap, might be able to just store a few extra bags in your freezer and open when needed so you're not running out all the time.

    Quick thing about the counter top ice makers. The less expensive ones won't keep your ice cold. It freezes the cubes, dumps them into a bucket and then you have to store them in the freezer. To have one that would hold the ice after making it would be a lot more expensive and take up more room.

    Go for a countertop *nugget* ice maker if you can swing it. Nugget ice makers make the easily chewable kind of ice that they have at SONIC (which you've had -- tho strangely without a drink iirc). The nugget ice makers do cost more (portable countertop bullet ice makers that make those bullet-shaped cubes of ice are less than $100/£100 on Amazon, but the portable countertop nugget ones are generally $160-190/£160-190), but they do a great job of cooling drinks down fast, and chomping on the ice while drinking is great.

    I don't know if they're available there, but they do make either window air conditioners (if the building you live in allows it) or portable air conditioners that sit on wheels in the room and vent the warm air out the window. They're not as efficient as the window units, but installation is basically putting a vent hose on the back and placing it by a window to vent. It would give you a nice room to cool down in or sleep in if it's warm and muggy.
